Fightlite SCR First Impressions At 300m

  • Formerly the ARES SCR and now the Fightlite SCR, this rifle is an AR-15 system modified to work with a FAL or Remington 1100 type mainspring housed in the butt. Without the muzzle thread it's 50-state legal in the US, and looks like... well any semiauto hunting rifle in this configuration. It'll accept any AR-15 upper, but requires use of a special bolt carrier since there's no buffer tube and it needs to use a rat's tail to cooperate with the mainspring.
    Scope is a Primary Arms SLx1 micro prism.

    I wish Fightlite would make a .308/7.62x51 version. The era of the traditional-stocked, semi-auto military rifle was too short in my opinion.

      Yeah, and Fightlite would market the hell out of that for saying that it's a hunting rifle.

      I agree actually. This is similar to an M1 carabine. I like 7.62 but it makes everything too big and heavy. But I can see how an AR-10 with a traditional stock could be useful.

    Honestly as someone who doesn't live in a ban state, I'd want one of these. Go all-in on the heresy: BRN-180 upper, chamber it for .300 Blackout, Magpul SGA-870 stock (they're on the 870/1100 pattern). Like an SKS, but dragged kicking and screaming into the 21st century.

    • @falseprofit9801

      I’ve heard mixed feedback on the BRN-180, even the more recent productions. From what I can tell, unless you’re gonna spring for a Sig/H&K upper, you might as well just stick with the traditional “direct impingement” design.

    I'm from a ban state so the SCR has been on my radar for years now, but it was out of stock for so long that I ended up buying a Mini-14 instead. I'm still interested in the SCR, but at this point I think I'd rather deal with having a "fin grip" on a mil-spec AR lower over the very proprietary and expensive SCR lower. That said, very cool to see more content on the SCR!

    • @ARESDefense
      @ARESDefense ปีที่แล้ว

      This is a well done and credible review, since Bloke on the Range purchased his SCR and wasn’t provided with a “complimentary” product to review. Having said that, you are misinformed on Mark Serbu’s participation on the SCR’s design. Mark and Geoff Herring (the SCR’s actual designer) have been friends for a couple of decades and Mark helped machine one of the (*originally* 0:39 MSR’s) early lower receivers. Period. Mark had no further contribution to this product or its design.

    Just a note, you can have a threaded muzzle on a rifle in California, but you can only have a muzzle brake, not a flash suppressor. It's pistols that can't have threaded barrels.

  • @verfugbarkite
    @verfugbarkite ปีที่แล้ว +3

    Think this is an underrated design, although perhaps the buffer tube is a bit cludgy an idea. This better suits the Everyman rifle concept than do scout rifles.
    Also, I think the more traditional design more suited to home defence use as it’s more usable as a club than are pistol grip style weapons- you don’t have to change your grip hitting someone for one thing. 🤷🏻

    @ditzydoo4378 ปีที่แล้ว

    If muzzle blast is a problem, I would suggest a blast can/attenuator. it will be sending flash forward and away from you and all others.
    As to California, I built my featureless around the Thordsen FRS-15 Gen-I stock, a Sentinel .223 Wylde 1-8 twist free floated barrel in a UTG 15-inch forearm. The barrels muzzle is threaded and as long as one uses a "Brake" and not an evil "Flash-Hider" you're golden and can have the magazine release and (sigh) 10-round magazines. This upper is topped with a 2x7 Vortex Crossfire BDC scope will happily turn in sub-moa with most offerings. though it does tend to really like the heavier projectiles Hornady Frontier 68 BTHP and Hornady Black 75 BTHP match, and 77 grain Sierra BTHP Match-Kings. The lower houses a Rock-River 2-stage national match drop in trigger which is glorious, breaking right at 3-pounds.

    I haven't figured out the magic sauce for lightweight rifles that don't string. As far as I can tell, it's down to luck. I've built, and seen built, dozens of pencil-barreled rifles, some free float, some not, and some of them will string or wander, and some of them won't. I've seen some perform terribly at 100m, and some perform great at 700.
    The best explanation I can offer is that it's down to the barrel itself. When you shave them down that far, any residual stress in the material is going to make itself known - and of course, it's either there, or it isn't. And cost on the barrel might not make a difference, since it's a function of the blank, not the finishing.
    In any case, I've never seen a good study on the subject, and it would be a lot of work to do it.

Since there is some vertical movement of the rat tail, buffer, and spring, I wonder if that is the source of your vertical dispersion.

Why don't you give us a quick rundown on performance, likes, don't like,& etctera.
