It's true. I've had to force myself to sit a little longer on my assessments of D/A converters or headphones, and even though i might have rightly judged that a component is not what I thought it was- or, had expectations, it has occasionally turned out to be a happy accident and always a learning lesson.
I live somewhere with very little access to anything audio… it’s be really cool to one day get hands on mentoring. I’d love to build headphones one day. Guess I can try without any help 😅 see what happens haha
I usually hate everything I try at first then like them over time
I've run into distortion / clipping using the RME ADI-2 Dac into an external amp. It was pretty unsettling at first cause I assumed I should max the volume if I was using an external amp. However turning down the volume quickly fixed the issue so I'm glad I've had this experience and will know how to handle this in the future.
Appreciate the nerd talk 😅 I wish more people understood this stuff.
Saw one on Reddit today: Guys said his headphones sound better off his tube amp than they did on and he didn't know why.

Powering on/off with zero volume and nothing plugged in is ideal for headphone amps probably.
Our headphones are so high res!! Sure they are...what about making them look somewhat like a headphone?

I always thought XLR balanced was a professional and defined standard for studio gear.

XLR is just a connector type, and "balanced" just means three cables: positive signal, negative signal and shield.
There are standards in studio gear for line levels and mic levels, but these are usually printed on the inputs and outputs of professional devices, so you can be sure (like +4 dBu for line levels).
By the way a lot of mixing consoles use 3-pin XLR for microphone-level inputs and 3-ring 6,3mm plugs for balanced line-level inputs. It doesn't need to have an XLR connector to be balanced, all it needs is three connections.
