  • Is this destination on your bucket list? It should be. Lugano is a breathtakingly beautiful city in Switzerland, in the Canton on Ticino, the Italian-speaking part of Switzerland. It sits on Lake Lugano - in the south of the Alps - and is shared by both Switzerland and Italy, along with its neighbour Lake Maggiore (also half in Switzerland). Nearby, Lakes Como and Garda form the region commonly known as the Italian Lakes.
Lugano was once part of Milan. However, the Swiss Confederation claimed it as their own in the 16th century - and now the area blends Italian culture with Swiss reliability and efficiency. At the heart of the city is the old town, 17th and 18th century buildings, the Piazza della Riforma and the Cattedrale di an Lorenzo.
Parks, swimming areas and garden walkways line Lake Lugano. Be sure not to miss the Parco Ciani and Villa Ciani. As well, the top of Mt. Bre is a surefire people-pleaser. It can be accessed via a hike from Gandria, or a funicular reachable via a short walk from town. Switzerland is a diverse mecca for nature, aquatic adventure and peaceful vistas - do not miss this southern city, one of the gems of the lovely country.
