- The plane is caught in a storm and crashes down in the middle of the ocean. Chuck (Tom Hanks) struggles to survive the accident, narrowly escaping an explosion and the angry waves of the pacific ocean.

This is such a great movie !!! The saddest part on the entire film was when Tom Hanks's character lost Wilson because that toy helped him to stay alive and not to fall down to craziness during the time he was on the island.
That's one really intense scene! Keeps you at the edge of your seat! So sad that the co-pilot risked his life to help Chuck, a grown up, sit down with his belt on.

Already at FL350. Can’t get much higher than that. Doubt that airplanes service ceiling allowed for it either.
Or better around it. But they didn't make it that clear how it happened, apart from a fire in the hold.
The storm had nothing to do with the crash. There were volatile materials onboard which shouldn't have been on a plane at all. They weren't marked correctly. They caught fire and that's what brought down the plane when the fire breached the fuselage causing an explosive decompression. The storm was merely a distraction from the actual threat.
