One thing to add also is that that Prophet 5 patch uses modulation wheel to vary the frequency: with lowest position you get the short bass sound and highest you get that high sizzling sound. That's almost perfect match.
I wanted to thank you because I used your keyboard instructions to make my own cover of this song, on which I am playing all the other instruments. Although I didn't use the exact sounds at times, it's close. Thank you for your help and great work!
See description on the sounds. You'd think it's a DX7 but I never found anything in the libraries that sounds close to. On the other hand in the Prophet 5 library there's a sound that's almost identical: ArpegKotoish. It uses pulse FM. I used that waveform here.
I used a Prophet 5, PPG Wave 2.2, Fender Rhodes keyboard, and a Hammond A-100, that was a long time ago, I couldn't program a DX-7 lol but your spot on with your chords and lead line
If you were to take just the keyboard and get someone to listen to it and ask them what do they think, do they like it? They would probably ask is it from a game back in the eighties? On its own theres not much to it, but then again thats what is great about Level 42, its just all the pieces put together. Well produced music. Good tutorial again by luke48
@joaquinsynteklas Not sure I understand the question. I recorded it straight from the Fantom without computer. I did import DX7 and Prophet WAV samples into Fantom.
Thanks for breaking down this song so accurately. I also appreciate your thoughts on his clav-like sound; I have been trying to reproduce for while, but haven't been successful. I will try again with your tips, thanks!
Thank you:-). I investigated the Clavi sound (people couldn't remember other that it couldn't be a Synclavier). I got exact same sound by slightly modifying the 'ArpegKotoish' preset on Prophet 5 (remove unison and increase the filter sustain). And for the sustain you would increase the modulation wheel to get that sound variation on sustain. Most people still think it's DX7 but I owned that synth and never got anything close to that..
@@Luke48 Thanks again; as you probably already seen, there seems to be a lot of speculation about on the web. There was a pretty good discussion: forum.vintagesynth.com/viewtopic.php?t=60836 But, to my ear, you are really close!
@joaquinsynteklas Thanks. I typically use all 3 FX and 2 chorus/reverb processors of the Fantom X (definitely could use more like newer Fantom G or Yamaha Motif). Equalizer is also a must to blend sounds better.
@joaquinsynteklas This is straight out of the Fantom into the camcorder. No amp used here. There's a speaker sim/pre-amp effect though in Roland but I didn't use here.
Thanks for the info!... One more question- do you actually have a PPG wave and Prophet 5 or are you using some type of emulator? Ican't imagine what it would cost to get my hands on both boards. :)
Were those onboard sounds you were using or did you need to sample it? I've been trying to reproduce that syn-clav sound for awhile with other gear but haven't come close to it.
Old Roland Fantom X6. But sounds are imported samples from vintage synths. Most sounds you might reproduce with modern synths. Clavi sound is Prophet 5 by using sync with a triangle wave.
Well nice to see more Level 42 keyboard parts!! It's not just the bass that is great. All skilled members of the band have a valuable contribution.
I've been trying to figure out that song for YEARS...you just made it much easier...thank you!

keep in mind this song was 1986, and nothing fancy back then. You nailed the song, no doubt. However the slap bass and keyboard back then was magic.

Such a faithful and encompassing tutorial. Excellent!
Thanks, great tutorial. I used your chords and clav progressions to come up with this. Hope I did it justice.
Something About You
Very nice and accurate cover. Can you do one of "Turn it On" or "Standing in the Light" - the keyboard parts in those are epic!

I use emulators (Pro-53, Waldorf PPG Wave plugin demo). Both synths were pretty rare and expensive even today.
Yes,excellent,excellent,excellent,classical,timeless💕💕💕❤❤
spot on brilliant song

Super lesson ; Thanks
Have you Lessons in love (surely difficult with only one keyboard and 2 hands !!!)
@Luke48 thanks but how do you get the fantom's sound to the computer?
Luke, could you try, Cindy Lauper's " All through the Night" Bass line?
It's great!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Thanks
Love This!
If the syn-clav sound was from a DX7, do you remember what the patch name was or what ROM it's on?
THANK YOU!
Faz uma da musica Sleep On My Heart
Nice :)
gracias luck desde este lado del planeta
¡AWESOME!
I feel like a moron because I studied piano for 5 years (haven't played in DECADES), but what key is this in?
Thanks:-)
Great!!!!
What synth is that?
Old Roland Fantom X6. But sounds are imported samples from vintage synths. Most sounds you might reproduce with modern synths. Clavi sound is Prophet 5 by using sync with a triangle wave.
awesome!! #levelhead4life
Where do you get the samples from?
No direct samples but programmed on a couple of virtual synths. See description
Prove it
NO NO NO! The first chords are not correct!!!... Don't touch the LEVEL 42 please........!!!
