    I moved a 130 year old farm house 30 years ago. Moved it directly across the street from where it was located, about a half a block move as it was located in a 14 acre field. House is single story, 30 feet wide and 40 feet long. House cost $1000, and the move was $2000. To fix it up cost $80,000.

    My mother's historic home, three story, 20+ rooms was moved successfully for less than you'd believe. Don't let people saying it would be too expensive to sway you if you haven't checked.

    One problem with this idea is that while sometimes you can pick up a beautiful home this way, it often costs more to move and renovate such a house than it would to simply buy a similar home already fixed up that does not need to be moved. A lot of these old homes are in locations that are not exactly magnet neighborhoods. This means that to have such a house and live in a nicer neighborhood one would have to transport the house a fairly long distance. The cost varies but a typical cost for moving a house a few miles is around $50,000. Factors that can change that would be the distance it needs to be moved and the size of the house and the complexity of the relocation. You can often move a house a fairly long distance in a rural area at a cost less than gong just a few blocks in an urban area. A taller home would necessitate the temporary moving of power lines etc. Besides the cost of actually moving the house there is the advanced prep before a house can be moved. Every pipe and wire has to be cut. Fireplaces are built into chimneys and chimneys have to be cut from below and then supported for the trip and that includes expensive stabilization. If a house has half a dozen fire places that can add up fast. Once the house is on jacks and separated from the foundation it then must be transferred onto the back of a special truck bed. An over size house often has to be cut in half so it can be placed on two truck beds. This would be the case for narrow streets. But before you can do any of that you have to have a foundation already poured and prepared to receive the house and you need all the appropriate permits. And all of that adds to the cost of moving. So lets say you buy some land. Lets say it costs you $25k then you pay to have utilities put in. That can be another $50k Then build a foundation and lets say that's another $50k. Now hire a crew to prep the house on the old house lot and that can be $25k. Lets say the move itself is $50k so that can total $200 and you don't even have it renovated yet. Now lets say you are like me and want to restore the house as much as possible to it's 150 year old charm. If the house is largely intact, that is to say, it has never been desecrated by modernization, it will still cost you thousands to get it up to code, thousands more to restore it and thousands more to make the kitchen and bathrooms functional. I would go all out so I would want period stove and fridge. An antique stove and lets say a couple of ice boxes restored and converted into freeer/refrigerator those alone can cost you over $20k. Even if you do a lot of the work yourself it can cost another $100k-$200k to make it into your home. In my old neighborhood I can buy a 150 year old house already restored to this extent for $200k ready to move in.
    So Bottom line is you really have to fall in love with that specific home to make it worth while sometimes. Now if you don't have to move it then that can really be worth while buying an antique fixer upper or if you don't have to travel far and you have a lot already with the utilities already in and it's not far from the house you are acquiring, it can be worth while. But keep in mind, there is usually a reason these houses are free. Someone has already crunched the numbers and in most cases found it isn't worth the effort. It all comes done to finding someone who really loves old houses so much that they don't care about the expense. I like all of them but the are all way too far away from where I would want to live.
    I grew up in a house that had been in my family for centuries. Built in 1695 it wasn't even the oldest house in the town. It was the second oldest. The oldest house had been lived in by the family who build it since 1688. When I was a kid the farm the house was on was sold to develop into a 300 unit condo complex. The town historical society tried everything to save it. The new owner was only interested in making money and saw the house as a pile of junk interfering with his operation. After some negotiating the new owner finally agreed to let the house remain intact if someone would agree to come and get it and move it onto their own lot. The town only required that it remain some place within the town. The new owner agreed to let it remain intact for one year. They did not find a single interested party. So the new owner let the historical society come and strip the house of anything they wanted for their museum. They tried to save as much as they could. Then the bulldozers came. It took 20 minutes to turn a 285 year old historic home, the oldest in the town, into a pile of rubble and another day to turn it into three dumpsters full of rubble. That was the day our house became the oldest house in that town. The next month the historical society came by with out new plaque that reflected our new status. So the condos went in, all 300. The selectmen enjoyed their complimentary trips to Europe, Disneyland and Hawaii and their new luxury cars and swimming pools. Hundreds of new residents moved into those condos, mostly from out of town. Then two years after the last condo was sold, the whole thing went up in flames. There wasn't enough water and every last unit burnt to the ground. No one was seriously hurt. By 1980 most people had forgotten that there was ever an old house or a 300 unit condo complex. Today there's a Walmart and several big box stores, a McDonald's, KFC and Burger King there but before that a mall went up in the 1980's and then was torn down about 8 years ago when it was unable to survive after the financial crisis.
    None of the selectmen that had been bribed to let the three hundred condos go in and not protect the symbol that was incorporated into our seal in 1787 had lived in the town prior to the 1960's and none remained past the 1990's. They had no sense of history or continuity. The developer died around 30 years ago penniless after having been sued by most of the condo owners. I heard he fled to Florida and lived as a homeless person before he died but that might have been a wishful thinking rumor.

    Seeing that it's free and to move it? How in the hell can you move a house that big? I know some move smaller houses etc and so on. But these houses are huge, can you imagine how much it would cost to move it?!!! Wow!

    I love every one of these houses. Quality, beauty, and uniqueness!!! When I have Bill Gate's money, or even a little less, I will save every one. I grew up in a house that was built circa 1859 to 1864. Dreamt of that house just last night. The house that I grew up in is part of my soul.

      @davebrittain9216 7 ปีที่แล้ว +10

      Your wish really should be that you wish more people had the money not the passion. The cost to move and restore an old house is more often that not prohibitive. There was a beautiful stone house in our area that would have cost a million dollars to move an put on a foundation. After the move there would have been restoration as well. Way more than the house would be worth in the end.

      I purchased a farm house build in 1856. It had nothing really special to it to make it unique or fancy. I did a ton of work to it restoring it and modernizing it. I should have torn that one down really. You know that old saying "they don't build them like they used to" well in the case of that one it is a good thing!

    The problem with moving a house is that it will cause cracks to form in the foundation, walls and ceilings. Why would a person want an added expense such as that? And OMG, the expense to move it is astronomical to say the least.

      Only if you are rubbish at moving houses. The whole point is to do it right so none of those things happen. My father is retired now, he moved so many houses starting with ours 46 years ago. It was a two story 5 bedroom and took up both sides of the road.

      Teresa Yeates Very impressive. Not so easy moving a 2 story. Looked into moving a historical home from a rural area to an better neighborhood a few miles away. Ultimately the numbers didn't work but it was worth considering.

      this is not necessarily true my cousins moved their home and there was a large home moved down the road from my home. the biggest issue is you have to pay to have all the wires that go over roads disconnected and then reconnected etc, and in america, the roads are riddled now with wires that would be in the way

By the time it was lifted, moved 5 miles down a country road (no power or phone lines involved) plus new foundation, not to mention sewer ect. They could have rebuilt the same house for just a few hundred less then the cost to move the thing. And dont even ask what the temporary insurance cost was to cover the house while it was being moved. Fyi

    wish there were more houses in Louisiana like those. I'm from new orleans and I love old style homes but can seem to find any near my area. my husband is retired veteran and they have so many rules of why they can't put veterans in old houses but rather they move in a better condition house. Any tips on how we may gather info on old style homes for veterans?

      Moving a house, like the two really move in ready ones, with the great staircases, are difficult and extremely expensive to do, plus you need the agreement from the location you're moving it to, and the cost, after they put the house on the trailers, cost per mile to get it out of there. The expense would be the same for the cost of buying it and the land in the area. The land was purchased by someone and they want to demolish it, but that cost a bundle now too, then you have the carting away all the dibris, some carting companies won't move, due to what is in the walls at the time it was built, so they need special removing services. At that cost, it's almost like buying another house, and the taxes, depending on location, can be a killer too. So, they offer the house free, let you take on all the responsibility to raise, move it and re-locate it. I wish I could take one and move it to Montana, but that would cost more than I have. The locations they're already in are perfect, why not keep them and rent out, making some money. They already own the land, now keep the house, they're free right?

    A few years ago, I would have tackled a project like any of these! But health issues and an aging Mom has changed my ability to get into such a project.
    If I had won one of the recent BIG Lotteries, I would have grabbed up all five of them... and a few more besides.
    ( I understand Frank Lloyd Wright's famous waterfall house is in a similar status...bad need of repair and facing possible demolition... (sad)
    One BIG consideration for each of these houses will be if there is Available Property to move the house TO that is within reasonable distance of the current location!

  • @themoonlitquill
    @themoonlitquill 7 ปีที่แล้ว +3

    Free is subjective, as the cost of moving an entire house is astronomical. This is, perhaps, the main reason no takers are coming forward to claim the houses. If you research the costs and permits, the land costs involved in moving a house you will be far less surprised as to why no one is clammering to claim and move these "free" houses. If it sounds too good to be true, it usually is.

      Jeremy l believe it involves a flatbed trailer, heavy duty equipment, jacks and cinder block to raise it to put it on the flatbed, semi truck to pull the trailer, wide load warning trucks, research into the route to make sure there are no low hanging spots ( like tr affic lights and bridges) , then plan it, get everything together on the same night and time, most towns will not let this be done during the day, so have a beer and keep fingers crossed. sounds like fun don't it 😦

    • @johninokla2635

      They have special beams they put under the house to hold the floor joist in place while the entire house is picked up and moved all in one piece down the road. No need for a flatbed truck. I would imagine that since most of these houses are two or three stories it would be a nightmare to move them since the power lines would have to be held up so the houses could pass under them.

      It's way cheaper to move a house. My parents were given an old farmhouse by an old lady who didn't want to see it demolished to make way for farming ground. To make it legal they also paid a dollar for it. The moving of it and the new foundation and the lot they put it on and some minor remodeling plus a new garage all cost way less than building a brand new house.

    A person near where I live moved his historic home from one side of his property to the other because it was too close to the road. The move was somewhere between 50-100 feet. He had plenty of land so buying a place for it, or taking it out on the road, wasn't a problem. It was easily as large as some of the homes you feature here. I have no idea what it cost him to do this, but it had to have been steep. Whoever did the job was professional and pulled it off flawlessly. It was amazing to watch. Bottom Line: I cannot imagine what it would cost to move any of these "free" houses featured in your video although the idea does sound appealing.

    There was a man that moved an old Mizner Home.Brought it down to a corner lot on the Ocean in Palm Beach. The House was in three sections. They were moved up from the beach and onto the land. Unfortunately, he was given to the beginning of Hurricane season to have it in place, which didn't happen, so it was demolished. But across the intercoastal in West Palm Beach, they moved a house to a different lot, so it could be saved. It is not unusual in Palm beach to buy an older home, not historic, and tear it down to build a three story Mini-Mansion. Sometimes they were homes built in the Brady Bunch Era, which are very dated, and hard to re-do. And the new homes are much nicer and up to code.

      I totally relate to what you're saying. I had a spine surgery myself that failed so it's pain for life for me. And I live in literally the most expensive place in the country to live, the San Francisco Bay Area😬
      But yes I think the City or at least the government should step up and pay the moving cost for some deserving hard-working honest people to have. They give housing to people on a silver platter who absolutely do not deserve it along with money for food medical and everything else. That shit pisses me off to no end!!! Hi Cynthia :) I"m sorry I just saw your reply now it just popped up on my phone but it looks like it was left two months ago. Anyway, for a two bedroom tiny apartment in an "undesired" part of town and neighborhood is between $2,500 and $3500. Some might be slightly lower and some might be slightly higher for example I know my neighbor is paying $3,600 a month plus we have to pay for utilities and parking is a freaking nightmare!!! A one bedroom shithole apartment in the same shithole neighborhood is around $2,300 a month and have to pay for utilities. Oh and I might add that my social security disability just got cut off because I didn't return some form within 10 days and I never even received this form, 100% honest. And then we have all the liars and fakers and fraud people that are doing nothing but abusing the system because they are lazy freeloaders it just makes me sick!!! So where are you guys from?

      NorCal. I live in the East Bay Area San Francisco Bay area so now I know exactly what you're talking about it is too expensive to live here in California the cheapest rent I've found anywhere is $2,000 here and that's where I live right now. Ijs. Homes are expensive, gasoline is almost $4 a gallon here, good jobs are hard to come by. I'm blessed to have a job with UPS going on 19 years now... And I still can't afford to live on my own the rents are so stupid High here.

      Pattycakes92510 Hiya miss cakes :) So rent is expensive in the East Bay also huh? I assumed it was cheaper over there on the east side of the Bay because it always used to be but I guess times have changed, well that sucks!! I'm looking to move from here but not too far away and I figured the east Bay was cheaper but now that you educated me on that I'm thinking about moving to Tahoe. My insurance company just offered me a 7 figure lump sum settlement which I don't really need but that's probably the only way I'll be able to buy a house because I sure as hell don't have $200,000 laying around for a down payment ya know what I mean. And you're right you are doing good with UPS, I have a few friends that work for them and it's a good gig. Well hang in there and if there's anything I can do to help your situation feel free to get ahold of me and I will do everything I can to help ok. Take care hun 😎
