Modeling the Huge "F" Scale Trestle at Garagemahal - Part Two - The Trestle Bents (Legs)

  • This week we are continuing work on the huge trestle that crosses the big 12-foot high canyon on the large-scale railroad at Garagemahal.
    In part one of this series, we modeled the main structure of the trestle. If you missed that video, you can watch it here: • Video
    The Trestle connects the switching yards and locomotive shops to Alamosa, Schitt's Creek, and through the outside wall to the garden railroad in the yard.
    This week we are building the bents, the tall legs that support the deck and track. Bents are support structures built from square beams. Often such structures are bridges where the supports are round posts or piles driven into the ground rather than bents made to stand on concrete footings. But in our case, we are building a trestle with bents.
    If you've followed the first video closely, then you'll have all the techniques you need to model this bridge and the track! Don't hesitate to watch the video again if you need a refresher. We hope you enjoy modeling this bridge as much as we did!

    Hey, Guys. Instead of tape, which sticks to the wood. Use WAX PAPER. The glue can not stick to it because it is - oil. It will pull off the glued pieces, leaving no paper or whatever.

    I suggest naming the mine, "Dale's Lost Mind". Inside joke from a G scale club that I as a part of in the 1990s. We had "John's Lost Mind", named after the owner of the hobby shop who let the club built a layout in the backyard and it included a mine entrance in one of the hills.

    Nice work. A pointer on using yellow wood glue (after having built wood furniture for years), is to use a small paint brush to spread the glue out on both sides of the joint. You want enough glue to cover but shouldn't be oozing out all over the place. When done, you can wash the brush out in water and even if you forget to, you can soak in water and restore the brush. I have used the same brush for years.

    If building a pile trestle or any other piling - the top of the tree is driven into the ground. This is so the ground pressure is against the piling as it is driven deeper due to the tree taper.

    Love it. Kinda reminds me of the old White River trestle in southern Tulare County, that used to be south of Ducor on the old Santa Fe Porterville Sub. Sadly all of that's long gone, but a friend and I got pictures of all of it before it was gone.

    The sway bracing between bents is connected like the sway bracing on each bent but does not need to span more than one span at a time. It looks like you have 7 bents; the abutments are included in the number of bents. Bent No 1 is an abutment, Bent No 2 is the baby bent, Bents No 3, 4, 5, & 6 are the full height, & Bent No 7 is the right abutment bent above the mine. The horizontal pieces between the bents are called "girts" and are not necessarily continuous from one end to the other but are above or on top of the sills. The girts span just inside or outside of the outside post between No 2-3, 3-4, 4-5, 5-6, and the mudsill to the bottom of the top story from the abutment No 1 to No 2 and No 6 to abutment No 7. Alternate the side, inside and outside, for the girts. According to the Rio Grande Southern RR plan, there should be 3 girts between bents for each story above the bottom one. The girts between the vertical posts would attach to the sills just side by side.
    The sway bracing between the bents would be the same size as the other sway bracing but not extend beyond one span and would be on the outside posts only from top to bottom unless for a road or stream on the bottom story.

    Very informative and entertaining. Keep doing your videos together as the back and forth between you adds a lot. Where the holes for the reinforcement bars are concerned, I suspect they were done on the prototype by hand with a large wood boring bit and a T-Handle brace- Just a bit labor intensive?

  • @MrWestburyiii
    @MrWestburyiii ปีที่แล้ว

    tip... instead of using blue painter's tape on your bent jigs... Use clear packing tape (for closing boxes).. instead.. glue will not stick to it and the jig is still re-usable..

    Why they're called "bents":
    Home > Courses > Timber Frame Bents. The term 'bent' comes from a rural medieval English construction method called 'cruck' framing. A bowed (bent) tree was split into two lengths and bound together at the peak, held apart with a collar tie and raised into position to form an A shape bent frame.

    Great job! Loving the results of your tressels.
    I agree that your jig could have been full size, but it's looking like that what you have is working just fine.
    At 4:00 you're using blue masking take. It works, but glue sticks to it as well. When I'm building my balsa airplanes I use wax paper. Wood glue doesn't stick to it...as long as I remember to put the waxy side up.
    It was a fantastic idea to build your tresses taller. It's much easier to cut them down to length as each location could be different due to grade.
    At 12:50 you're like me. I go way overkill using my Dewalt drill on small projects as well as my large construction projects. :)
    Wow! At 19:23 and 19:35 I'm finally visualizing the results of the process. That entire project is going to look amazing! I'm loving the results thus far.
    I also love Karyns' jokes and quirkiness, and the "light at the end of the tunnel" was spot on.
    Thanks again for another awesome video!

      Nope. It doesn’t work. Well…. It plays 45s manually. I had it totally restored in 1985. Bought it in about 75 for $25. Anyway finally restored and loved it. I would play Tetris on my Mac 128 while playing it. Anyway it was STOLEN in 1999. And in 2007 I found it in an antique store! Bought it back. Super long story but was able to buy it for about $300. But it was trashed. Anyway I’ve been restoring it. Again.

    16:05 "horizontal elements"
    Y'know what I'd call them?
    _Stringers_
    Based on long past naval architecture lessons, stringers are the longitudinal colleagues of ribs/frames (which are the transverse - athwartships -strength members)
    I did a v quick Google search. Alas! all initial results feel in the aviation domain, *_but!_* the principle held: stringers are the longitudinal strength members (both wings and fuselage!)
    _The following is based only on what I've learned in your 2 tutorials; should be interpreted: as good-natured RIBBING, not any kind of know-it-all-ness!_
    If the lateral cross pieces are _sills,_ and the bents were truly *stacked* (unlike your _derisively cheap uni-pole _*_approximations)_* then it would stand to reason that each _sill_ would be - as with doors and windows - at the bottom of each section.

      P.s. piers are the modern term for the vertical supports on bridges.

    The scale of your bolts compared to the size of the wood is wayyy out of proportion. Couldn't you could have used something smaller than 4 MM Just looking at a scale says that this is wrong. ALSO How did you scale the size of the timbers in the structures to the scale of the loco and cars - if there is really a scale. How will you weather the timbers of the woodwork. water paint would probably do nicely or a wash with acrylic - grey??

    • @ToyManTelevision
      @ToyManTelevision  ปีที่แล้ว

      The scale is 1:20.3. The posts are 3/4” so 15”x15”. I’m weathering with wood oils. Watco oil. Doesn’t look like old wood but looks good anyway.
