"Is it really that easy to land a job in Hollywood, just be a good-looking, tall guy?" Funny story, that's LITERALLY how David Boreanaz landed his role as Angel on Buffy. The casting team had seen practically every "hot guy" in town trying to cast the character, but then the casting director's friend recommended they bring David in to read for the role because she'd seen him walking his dog in her neighborhood and thought he was beautiful. The rest is history!

Angel was only his third credited role and IIRC, the person who mentioned him to the producers didn't know he was an actor, so it's really not that far off how he ended up in Buffy. It doesn't diminish his skill as an actor, it just demonstrates how being handsome can allow you to get your foot in the door in Hollywood.

I don't care for him too much on "Buffy," where he's almost deliberately a one-dimensional romantic interest. But I knew I would love Angel on his own show from the moment he jumps into a convertible and it turns out to be the wrong car.

It’s funny watching all you young reactors discover Buffy and Angel all these years later. As an old fart, I started watching Buffy when it was shown in the UK in the 1990s on television. when I went to university I had to stop watching it because we didn’t have a television and my poor mother was tasked with recording it every week on the VCR and remembering not to tape over it by accident. At the time there was quite a delay before the licenced videotapes for the current series are available in shops, and it was even longer before I would have any chance of having the money required to purchase them as they were actually quite expensive at the time. I never got to watch season seven of Buffy until years later because by then I was living away from home, again without a television, and not coming back often enough to make it worth it being recorded. And for a long time, the only way I was able to find out what happened was because people were illegally posting synopses online. I managed to get hold of the first two seasons of angel on VCR, and then it was synopses four seasons, 3, four and five. Watching you all watch these now and experiencing them in such a different way, and being able to talk to people across the world in almost real time and share with the reactors is such an incredible thing. I’m so pleased to be able to re enjoy the shows as an adult and not feel I’m the only person on the planet loving them. Back then it was a fight to see each episode and quite often I would miss either the beginning or the end because the timer on the video was never quite in sync with a timer on the television, or somebody would accidentally record the beginning of a soap opera over part of it.
It’s also really interesting to me how my perspective on the characters has changed. I never much liked Buffy the first time around, but now I feel like I understand her much better and appreciate how very carefully she was written in many respects. My initial favourite characters from my childhood viewing, who I eventually came to dislike by the very end, I find I start to dislike very quickly because I can see the character traits that put me off emerging even in season one of buffy. My overall favourite character still is my favourite and still steals every second of every scene they are in. I don’t think they will ever not delight me.
The only thing better than these reactor communities (I’ve also seen all the lovely Liam duke’s reactions etc) is the thing the internet was built for.
    Fan fiction.
If you haven’t read BtVS fanfic you haven’t lived. It was my gateway drug to the rest of my life and I’ll be forever grateful to all the authors who dodged all those years of copyright infringement warnings for blowing my mind wide open and giving me the greatest gift of all….that the story never has to end.

    @sherrysink3177 ปีที่แล้ว +2

I'm definitely one who started watching Angel first, and the origin of my watching it always amuses me. I don't know if you took time to listen to the theme song for Angel's opening credits since you made sure to not watch them (good job, by the way), but it's a gorgeous theme song. It starts out with this plaintive, aching cello solo, very broody Angel mood, so beautiful, and then a beat kicks in and it rocks out like Buffy's theme does.
So this was not long after the Angel pilot first aired, I think, and they were repeating it on a Sunday afternoon, maybe to get more viewers' attention? I was sitting on the couch, folding my laundry, not really paying attention but half-listening to the TV, when that theme song came on. As soon as I heard that cello, I remember freezing in my tracks and looking up at the TV to see what was playing. And it was soooo beautiful, I was like, okay, what IS this? And then the rock beat kicked in, and I was like, okay, now you have my full attention. What IS this?? I have to know! 😆🤣
I ended up watching the entire pilot episode, and LOVED it. I loved the humor, the dark tone, the surprise twists -- not having watched any of Buffy beforehand and not knowing anything about Angel, I didn't expect Angel to be a vampire, I didn't expect that bad guy to be a vampire, I just thought he was going to be a sleazy producer, and then I really didn't expect Angel to kick him out a window! (Which I loved. Heeee.)
I agree with you too, Thor; the show definitely has some L.A. noir-ish tone to it. And if memory serves, this show came out maybe only a year or two after L.A. Confidential was in theaters, so perhaps Joss and Co. were inspired by it too? I love L.A. Confidential, so I was immediately drawn to the tone of the show, Angel's emotional struggle and broody nature, Cordelia's surprise soft edges (wasn't expecting to see her living alone and being a literal starving actor, not after the way we were introduced to her, since I didn't know her from Buffy yet), and I also liked Doyle. I just found the whole thing very intriguing and mysterious and greatly appealing. So after 1 episode, I was on board to watch Angel. Between the theme song and the pilot, I was sold. 😍
As Angel says in his last words of the pilot, "I'm game." And I was like, "YES! ME TOO! I'm game! When is this usually on? I'm watching it! Please tell me it's not been cancelled already." 😂
And then... after watching a few episodes of Angel (and seeing them reference Buffy occasionally, as you noticed in this pilot), I was like, oh man... I'm going to have to start watching this Buffy show, aren't I? That Joss Whedon, he sucked me in! (LOL) So I tracked down the first 3 seasons and binged up to the start of Buffy's 4th season and watched the rest of that series in time with watching the whole Angel series as it aired.
I'd agree that they're two different shows. As others have mentioned below, Buffy was a younger style of series. It did get serious, of course (I mean, as you know, they killed off a major character in season 2!), but overall it had a lot of humor and youthful high school exuberance, while Angel's show is like you note: very Batman in tone, very dark and moody, still funny but sadder and a little more adult. So Angel was my first foray into the overall world, and became my favorite for a long time.
I definitely love Buffy the Vampire Slayer as well, but I've always had a soft spot in my heart for Angel the series because I started with it first. They're both wonderful, though. They both have fantastic episodes and some just so-so episodes, and some infuriating episodes (lol), and overall are terrific shows. And they both have killer theme songs, but Angel's is my favorite. ❤
I hope you enjoy Angel and Buffy as you delve deeper into these 2 worlds, Thor. Have fun!! 🎉🎉

You may have noticed the Powers That Be mentioned. It's really the first time they've been talked about specifically and named, but it is definitely not the first time Angel has interacted with them.
Here they sent Doyle to him, but before they sent Whistler to him. Remember how Whistler, at the end of season 2 knew so much about Angel. It was just the same. Then, all they wanted him to do was clean up his act and follow Buffy. They knew that he would form an attachment to her and he would learn how to fight for the forces of good from her.
Beyond that, they are the ones that saved him from the daylight in Amends with the snowstorm too. In fact, they could very well be the ones who brought him back from the hell dimension. The evil one in Amends took credit for it, but it could have just been lying. It and its followers sure took their time getting around to messing with him after he got back.
In any event, this is one of those things that makes these shows so rewatchable. The Powers That Be have been around since the pilot episode, as they are likely the beings that help the slayer with her premintionary dreams, but finding out about them 3 seasons in kind of rewrites the show up to this point. So, when you rewatch them, you may notice them manipulating events now that you know they do that.
There are a number of times in these shows where you learn of something that has been secretly going on only to be told about it much later, so when rewatching, it's almost a different show. It just makes the show that much better than other ones.

I was 9 when I saw Becoming part 2 on accident while my mom had it on, and I became obsessed immediately. I only vaguely remember Buffy season 3... But the next clear buffyverse memory was watching this episode in my room as it aired. It became my show in a way no show had ever been before, maybe because there were elements that rang truer to my life compared to Buffy, but either way I kept up more with Angel than Buffy for a long time until I could afford the box sets. Also I vibed with Cordelia, so what was I going to do? NOT watch the show with my two faves???

For the Angel and Angelus analogy, I usually try to remind people that Angel I'd a duel being. He has a demon and a soul as two separate entities, of which the soul has control of the body. When he vamps out, the demon exerts greater control, but ultimately the soul still can maintain control over his body despite the demon being more present. This struggle was really brought to the fore with Buffy punching him until he camped. She knew in his weekend state, the demon side would overpower him momentarily to bite her, but she trusted that, as her blood gave him strength his soul would take the reigns of control back and stop short of draining her completely.
With his duel nature though, he's completely different from when his soul was removed. Angelus is just the demon part of him, which has no compassion or conscience. It even enjoys human suffering. All his actions as Angelus are actions of the demon and his soul wasn't even there. So, now back with his soul as Angel, he is fairly well absolved of Angelus' actions with the exception of retaining the memories and being punished by his conscience despite him not actually having done those things.
I swear, it was a genius move for them to give him that dual nature.

I've watched BTVS dozens of times, but oddly enough Angel series only once (live) with exception of the pilot and crossover episodes that I've seen dozens of times. I will say I always thought Angel was a great show. Watching it live, I remember always being impressed, but I think I go back to BTVS so many times because of the characters. They feel like friends. Despite its sometimes dark themes, BTVS is also brighter and more uplifting of a show so it lends itself more to rewatching. Angel feels more like you have to be in that solemn mood to really take it on. But I have been meaning to rewatch angel for a very long time. It literally ONLY gets better. There is a villain down the line that is my favorite of any TV show, and there are personal developments for Angel that are also my favorite character arcs of any TV series, so I have no idea why my brain hasn't allowed me to rewatch angel. I think I always feel I have to rewatch buffy first and then take on Angel around season 4 but because I get so obsessed with Buffy (it's like an instant trigger the second I watch the pilot), I always want to watch ALL of Buffy without interruption, and delaying it even a few hours with Angel interwoven feels like torture. So once I start BTVS, I want to go ALL the way, seasons 1-7, no interruption. But then regret not stopping for Angel because the two shows really should be watched together to enjoy all those little crossover moments you already discovered. Knowing that, I always end up going, okay, I'll save Angel for THE NEXT time I rewatch BTVS and this time I will watch them together. But over a decade later, that's never happened. Whoopsie!

So i started watching Angel first cause it just happened to be on and I can't remember which episode but i just thought it was its own thing, and it took me a whole year to realize it was a spin off and she had her own tv show
