I like motion blur as much as the next sadist, but what I don't understand is how anyone could like motion blur that stretches beyond the distance traveled in a single frame.
Incidentally Remnant 2 comes with Motion Blur disabled on the PS5. But however enabling it was a really pleasant experience, wasn't smearing or detracted from the visuals one bit. It did wonders hiding some of the upscaling issues that happen in motion.
The thing about Camera Motion Blur is that is very useful at 30 fps to mask the low framerate but it becomes a matter of personal taste at 60 fps, at 100+ fps you can just turn it off, motion becomes so fluid that is unnecesary at that point, Per Object Motion Blur should be allways on, but the quality of the effect depends on how high the shutter speed is.
the main problem with modern displays isn't about framerate/refresh rate but rather pixel persistence. An LED pixel that's been heated to let's say 6000 kelvin can't just instantly return to room temperature, it's that persistence that motion blur tries to mitigate rather than just making lower framerates look smoother.
LEDs don't reach 6000 Kelvin, I think they don't even reach 150 Fahrenheit. Only the filament in light bulbs reaches those temps. LEDs still use Kevin because different temps in those filaments gave different colors, That's why it's called color temperature. I might be wrong though, not an expert.
@@soul_slayer7760 you're right, it's not actually a thermal value, my mistake. The pixel persistence or "ghosting" is actually down to response time, and those numbers are usually presented to appear faster than they are. Turns out that even the fastest OLEDs still have a black-white-black response time of around 10ms, even when their G2G or MPRT response is rated at 1ms or less.
Wouldn't mind having complete DF Direct Weekly topics here at DF Clips (at least the juiciest ones), as they are usually hard to link forward, if you only want someone to watch the one part/topic of the 1,5h video. Especially if it's in the middle of the long video. And the receiver might just not watch it at all, after they've seen the whole length of the video, which might seem intimidating or confusing which part you are referring to.
Any chance for DF Shorts where you're going to compress this even further? I was hoping that clips will be such format, straight to the point. This didn't require almost 9 minutes to answer.
in my opinion 0 is the only tolreable option for the motion blur. Motion blur just looks terrible no matter how low you set it. I cannot understand how John can like this. I want to like it the same way he does, but it is impossible for me. I turn motion blur off completely in any game possible immediately. But it is still good to have a choice. Nothing wrong with liking motion blur, it just does not work for me.
What display are you playing on? I used to have an LED LCD TV for gaming and I didn’t like motion blur on that TV, but I now have an OLED and because of the instant pixel response even at 60FPS it can look stuttery without motion blur. I then looking into the pixel response times of LCD vs OLED and realised the long pixel response of LCD panels creates ‘motion blur’ on the panel, and having fake motion blur on top of that definitely looks over the top. I definitely think 30FPS looks smoother with motion blur regardless of what type of panel, but at 60FPS I think OLED looks smoother with motion blur but LCD looks too blurry with the panel blur + in game motion blur. I think it also depends on your preference for visual quality. For people like me who watch a lot of films we definitely like the look of that 180 degree shutter motion blur, whereas people who grew up playing 90s and 2000s PC games which had very raw image quality with no post processing they would definitely prefer the clarity of no motion blur.
@@kebbinator Agreed, the screen you use affects your perception a lot. This also reminds me of the hate for film grain. It looks really bad and noisy on most screens at the default sharpness setting (which usually artificially adds extra sharpness). But on a properly calibrated screen I think it's a really cool effect that hides a bit that digital and rubbery look most games have, while also looking more cinematic. It's actually very common to use noise filters on SFX to make them more natural. Also agree that motion blur makes even 60fps better. I tried turning it off in many games but it just looks choppy and disjointed to my eyes. Elden Ring performance mode randomly turns it off while exploring, and its kinda jarring to me. If it was turned on all the time, like it is in quality mode, the bad frame rate would be more tolerable.
Then you should Just remove your eyes too bcs spoiler alert. Every fast movement in Real life blurs too. Just wave your hand before you. Yup that per object motion blur. Now do a spin in place. Yup thats camera motion blur 😅
I'm not a fan of motion blur in terms of the look of it, but it's an excellent way to hide the horrendous look of 30fps gaming. I was always heavily saddened when a game had no motion blur or low motion blur back in the Xbox One days. Crazy that some people want their eyeballs to physically suffer XD
Motion blur in games are hilariously bad, especially for more complicated animations, most of them have wrong motion vectors so you just get nonsense blur.
It works amazingly well if done correctly. A really nice example would be Street Fighter 3 which has a completely different approach to motion blur because of its 2D nature. The motion blur is a part of the characters animation sprite. Moves like Dudleys cross counter are among the highlights imo. For 3D games, i think FF7R had very nice stylistic motion blur. I don't remember things turning into a blurry mess like they do in uncharted 4 for example.
Some games need it and I do like it when implemented correctly. People cry about the smallest things sometimes. As long as it’s not smearing my whole screen it’s great.
Are you not noticing the incorrect way that motion blur has been implemented? There is a literal halo around the character you can even see in the comparison video, motion blur in ragnarok for example doesnt do that around the character while moving the camera, i honestly am kind of dissapointed youre either not noticing that or either dont think its an issue, it literally makes the motion blur look cheaper than it should. And i am someone who always leaves motion blur on, i do get its appeal, i just wished there was actual conversation around this so its fixed.
I feel like he's denying that the motion blur was bad out of spite or something at this point. How can you not see the literal trails just coming off of Clive alone?
i loved it until i got a 144 hz monitor. when you're over 60 fps you dont really see motion blur adding improvement in smoothness and cinematicness, it just adds smears
Hate motion blur. I want to see everything that’s happening. Don’t need all these visually numbing features like depth of field, motion blur and what not. It’s horrible.
Options are important. If it doesn't affect performance, features like these should be customisable as everyone has a different preference. Just curious, do you dislike these effects even in cutscenes? Most games dont really use depth of field for the gameplay in my experience.
It's all very situational and really depends, I agree tho that camera blur is the worst one, a low setting is okay but I also get annoyed not being able to see things when panning the camera around, It's like John said it seems to really depend where your eyes normally look
@@MadLustEnvy Having options to accustom everyone’s personal preferences should indeed be the norm. Btw the example for everything not being sharp in life is not a good one. As you look through your eyes, you see everything sharp that your eyes are focused on in the moment. In a game, even if it’s a 1st person game, you are an external observer who most of time needs to be able to see and identify all your surroundings and since game graphics aren’t as clear as reality it is far harder to distinguish important objects or details when they are unnecessarily blurred or out of focus.

Alex has got it right: motion blur from moving the camera sucks. Motion bur on individual objects moving on their own is great if done well
Yup, per object motion blur is good.
I just remind you what was bad in Two Worlds 2. Ever since I turned it off for every game.

It's specifically banned in the Geneva Conventions.
