At the 11:47 mark Leila asks " So, what do you think? Do you see this being useful at your organization? ..." Candidly, I'm not sure. My 'simplistic' Application rule: I think of 'Excel' for numbers and 'Word' for letters, 'Power Point' for slides, Power BI for eye-popping illustrations etc. etc. etc. If presented with this assignment, I think I would default to 'Access' because I see a database as the solution, not a spreadsheet. Maybe for, an approved vendor list, or an approved parts list ... and located on SharePoint. But then again, maybe I learned something new this morning ... but have not realized it yet. Just one man's opinion ... 🤔. Thank you again ... for an introduction to another topic/feature that I was totally unaware even existed.
Outstanding explanation and presentation. Very useful across many organizational reporting requirements. Thanks for your efforts demonstrating the application and use of this functionality.
Thanks Leila! Great info, can you please make more videos on this? I can see this being used as a link to a master KPI database and pulling specific metrics at ad hoc.
I agree Steven. We can really use this as a great solution to the "single source of truth" system we are trying to develop for our finance team; if I understand this correctly, I can develop a set of tables that form the foundation of our KPI dashboards and store them in the Service as standardized "data types" from which our team can draw from? Excited to know more!
really most informative first time I understand power bi more knowledge gain first time I watch you video pls why small video to make all public use. I am Mir taimur from Pakistan
Hi Leila again, most of your videos are useful for daily job related activities but this video didn’t fit to that parameter, I’d highly encourage you to please come up with power bi course, no matter at UDEMY or TH-cam so that we can be more familiar with power bi and it’s usage, needn’t to mention your presentation skills, that’s always upto the mark.. wish you all the best, thanks (Rohit from India)
Thanks Leila for another great video! This is too cool! I have created a feature table using Power BI Desktop and published it to Power BI Service. I have shared the semantic models to my colleagues (who runs on the Excel 365 Current Channel and with PBI Pro License). However, they cannot see the Data Type I published. Apparently, I am the only one who can see the Data Type I created. Am I missing something? Or this is a settling control by IT? Appreciate your advice.
Excellent Leila, and I'm wondering when will you prepare advanced Power BI cource including desktop and online reporting versions? Please notify us because we need it. Thank you
@@LeilaGharani just finished the power query and power pivot course, next big bang for me would be your course about Power BI advanced. Can’t wait ! Enjoy your weekend:-)
First of all Thank you. Can imagine how much research would be required to make such video. How many Power BI Pro licenses would be required. Is it just one user to publish or each user using that data.
Great video thanks. 2 questions is there a way to change a icon in excel for your created data type, and is there a way to disable showing an icon in excel cells?
Hey Leila Are you available for project work and/or can you recommend a good resource that might be? Need a consulting resource that can help create VBA logic to solve for recurring manual processes, and calculations that require multiple steps. Would need someone that can be available to review the datasets and requirements and can complete requests within agreed upon timeframes. Pay commensurate with skills.
As much as I love your videos and religiously watch them all, I'm struggling to get excited about this. The organisations that have the ability to implement this would be using SharePoint. I can't see why anyone would want to downgrade from a full organisation employee structure in SharePoint to (excuse me!), bodging something together in Excel....and I'm a huge fan of Excel bodging. You'd also need an enterprise level install of Power BI too. Sorry Leila! If anyone can think of practical implementations of this functionality that can't be done better in other applications, I'd love to hear some decent brainstorming. 🙂
I would really love to have data types for items that we use to build a project estimate consisting of items and assemblies where the item has a cost, cost, cost category, and several labor categories, labor units attached to it.
Great tutorial. I had a follow up question on the topic. Do data type allow inheritance or hierarchy? eg. You have a user data type (name, ID, date of birth, department) with common fields and that can be inherited by an employee with more specific details (salary, grade etc), or a contractor for other different fields (vendor company, hourly rate)? Thank you!
The option : Data tab --> Data types is only present in Excel 365 or present also in excel 2016 desktop version ? there is a little confusion . Please guide me if you can . Thank you .
Will this still work if you upload the file to Sharepoint for users in the company? Will the custom Data Type "go with the file". I only want the Data Type for myself, use it in a report and upload the report to Sharepoint. Will they then be able to use it in only this file I have created?
Leila, unfortunately you should point out that searchable drop down list are available ONLY on excel 365 for win11! Exactly it does not show up for excel 365 for win10!
I'm trying to figure out if this would have been useful when I was tracking sustainability qualities of construction materials for green building rating systems. I no longer have that job, but we used Access as the database and that made it very difficult to update our Excel/VBA-deliverables-generating-tool as the rating systems that we were servicing evolved. Also, each product had too many attributes to be able to view one row in a spreadsheet, and Access was very clunky and made it difficult to view all of the data associated with one product. Would Power BI be appropriate for this scenario?
That sounds like a good case for Power BI to me. The good thing with Power BI is you get drill-downs which keeps reports clean - I have some Power BI videos on the channel - check these out to get a better idea.
Excellent Excel Videos. I have 40000 cells that I need to change to geography rich data type. Excel only allows a conversion of 100-200 cells at one time. Any way I can covert using a formula, power query or data model? Thanks
The thing is that for SAP you have often to do manual data extraction, unless your organization have an OData database connector in which often the IT department will just say no. That's my experience
So my understanding is that PowerBI pulls the data from wherever - say SQL server. What happens if the original data is changed, for instance somebody gets a raise?
Hi , Sub GoTo_Example1() Application.Goto Reference:=Worksheets("Jan").Range("C5"),Scroll:=True End Sub This is VBA code which i use to go to a cell , but i want to use this code in VBA code for a automation tool , where the range value varies for every sheet. So for that , i have a range value in a cell , which i want to go, so can u please help me out , how the Above code should be used to take the range from a cell (which has range value, which changes from sheet to sheet). Thanks

Thank you - agree, it's quite a different approach to what we're used to....
Could be a useful resource for those that don't want to open Access or are unfamiliar with it, but consistently have Excel open.
This is the most clear tutorial of creating feature table I've seen from TH-cam! Thanks!
Leila is awesome. We use Excel at work & Ive learned so much from her.
Not really gonna use this but amazed at how easy it is to understand... you're an excel wizard...
Glad you liked it.
Another amazing introducing. Thank you for these explanations!!
My pleasure!
Absolutely amazing! I was able to discover this video from your Power BI course ( a must have!) Thank you.
Brilliant video and explanation. Thank you!

Hello Leila Thank u so much.can u help me in simple quistions please ?
Would love to tie these into SAP data characteristics. Otherwise, it’s another table to maintain in excel. Do you have any tips on that?

I already use it for production (productivity of products by equipment)
Cool!

Surface.
Which version of Excel for Microsoft 365 is this? I only have the Microsoft and Wolfram data types.
This is the Enterprise version. Do you have the personal version Andrew?
@@LeilaGharani Yes - that explains it then!
I love it

Thanks Cimbro94. Yes. that's true. I've done a few videos on that so I forgot to mention here.
Will endorsement only make it discoverable by those with whom we have granted permission to the data?
I dont have employee id & other option related to employee in Data meenu , how to get this option in my excel menu . plz suggest
Interesting, can I do this in Power BI Report Server Version? Thank you.
Not 100% sure, but I believe so.
Can we use in Excel 2019 ?
