  • Scouting hunt on new permission. This new farm has plenty history dating back to Saxon times. Finds from modern to 13th century including plenty of junk as would be expected.

    It was nice meeting you at Heathrow Cottages last month. I think Chuck has done well using his new headphones. Enjoying watching you dig, gets my juices flowing for my next trip over the pond at the end of the week. I do want to say how much I appreciate that you emphasize the importance of leaving a dig site neat and clean. Our club bans guys who don't fill in their holes properly. Lately I've encountered a number of obvious night-hawking holes on land we have exclusive permission to hunt. They can't be arsed to take the time to fill them, so we spend as much time filling their holes as digging our own.

      Hope you did well on your visit and found many nice goodies. Glad Chuck is doing well with the SurffoneS. It was a pleasure meeting you and your detecting buddies from over the pond.

    Wow, that would be fantastic!
    I would LOVE to try metal detecting in the United Kingdom. So much human habitation & history over there, unlike here in Canada where the oldest coin I have found was from 1899.
    As to the lead disk: It could very well be a pilgrim's token, they were minted by various groups and private people for hundreds of years. It may also be what's left of a lead seal. Are there any types of identifying marks on it, even faint markings? That would help to narrow down when it was made, by who, & for what purpose.
    To be honest, my first thought when I watched you pull it from the ground was that it was a flattened musket ball. But when you said token, I grabbed one of my numismatic books & started searching.

      One of the best starting points will be in your local library with a large book called "The Victoria history of the county of "insert your county" published for the University of London Institute of historic research by Oxford University Press. Most good librarys normally have a copy in their reference section. I have gleaned many valuable bit of info from my "County of Oxford" version in my library. Make sure you take a pencil and paper as normally you cannot take out on loan

      Neil Frodsham Hi Neil, thanks for watching and your comment.
      What I know is they are id' as a plain lead gaming piece like used in a board game like "chequers" or draughty.

    quick question m8....at about 5:30,you pull out a bit of scrap from the hole,after finding a tiny pellet......why would the machine give the pellet signal more than the scrap signal,given that the scrap is a way bigger piece?

    Hi mate I liked your video and you found what you called a strap end what is it? Because I found one the same

    • @malcolmpotter
      @malcolmpotter  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi David, thanks for watching and your comment.
      A strap end is basically the metal end on a leather or cloth belt or strap to keep the ends from fraying. Used through history on many items. If you look on UKDFD web site you will see many examples of these items.

    Any advice for those starting out........a good reasonably priced detector?

    • @malcolmpotter
      @malcolmpotter  9 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi,
      Thanks for watching. All down to your budget
      on whats available. There are a good number of decent detectors but there
      are also some crap. Also depends on where you are searching and that can have a
      big influence in your selection. If your budget is very limiting, you could
      consider second hand. You have to be careful with this as there are some dodgy
      detectors on EBay either stolen or copies. With a budget of £250 you can buy
      the Garratt ACE 250 with change to spare. The best on the market are the
      Minelab machines. If you can increase your budget to £550 you can get the
      Minelab XTerra 705. Great land detector and good on dry sand. For beach work a
      multifrequency detector is really a must if you are looking for good results.
      The only drawback with the low price end detectors (single frequency) are
      not that good on the wet sand areas so you are limiting where on the beach you
      can go. All the good stuff in generally in the wet sand or surf. Most of the
      Bling Bling you see in my videos comes from this area of beaches using multi
      frequency detectors. The only thing I can say is with the cheaper end detector
      you will soon realise its limitation and look at the better detectors then you
      take a hit on the cheap one. Also the cost of the detector is not all the
      outlay, there are a good set of headphones, digging spade/scoop, bag, probe
      etc. If you want to discuss give me a call. PM me and I will send you my number.

    i am looking to buy a detector, are the detectors from Garrett any good for the UK are what do you advise, Thanks Marty

    • @malcolmpotter
      @malcolmpotter  9 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Marty,
      Garrett detectors are good machines but not very popular here in the UK. Obviously big in the USA but still the ATPro is used by a few in UK and the Ace series is a popular budget low end machine.
      The majority of detectors used in UK are Minelab or XP which seem to suit the UK conditions better.
      A really comes down to where you are planning to hunt and what your budget is. The budget will have a great influence on choice of detector.
      Send me a PM with your budget and details of hunting areas and style and I can advise you further. I will send you back my number if you want to talk as better than a thousand words of text.

      The farm as now is a lot smaller so must have been split up at sometime. Current owner of the farm I am searching has around 500 acres. Still researching this area so useful to know how large an area I should be looking at. The Manor house is not on the land I have permission on but the church is. The main natural water source flows on the boundary of the farm.
      Thanks for that bit of info.
