Black mountain F1 Buckfast queen introduced into an angry hive. Need nicer genetics in this colony!

  • These were the bees which we collected as a swarm in one of our other videos. I started to see signs early on that they were quite a defensive colony. They just got worse and worse. Great foragers but not the characteristics that I want. So I decided to re-queen with a UK mated Buckfast from Laurence ‪@BlackMountainHoney‬ I followed his steps that he mentions in his videos. I really hope they take to this queen 🤞

    I am near Houston TX so we have a good share of Africanize genetics. About 1/5 of my open bred queens result in a relatively hot hive.
    When I get a hot hive I like to do a Taranov split. The original hive gets new local genetics and usually results in a relatively calm hive. The split that receives the old queen usually does well as I find the hot queens do expand well and after the new hive establishes I keep splitting. When I get tired of dealing with the hot hive I pop of her head and force them to requeen. Usually my hot queen crossed end up being relatively mild.
    Most of my hot hives seem to have a lot of disease/pest resistance or they wouldn’t get very strong so I want that while diluting the bad side. I can buy good commercial Queen cells for $7.00 but my forced breeding gives me good results and there is great benefit from interrupting the brood cycle for varoa reduction

On a side note there’s not actual Buckfast bee breed they’re just what different breeders call them,I go to Buckfast Abbey quite a bit as it close to me and have friends in the bee unit,they’ve not breed commercial queens for long time! You own local stock will always be the best for your area.

      Hi Danny
      I was thinking of doing an update video as they have overwintered very well and are a very strong colony. Check all my hives last week and they are on 5/6 frames of brood! They only have a single brood on them as well. I’m really impressed, I have a couple of other queens off Laurence but they have been in Nucs, just transferred them into full size boxes.
      Temperament is very good to very workable, so may even graft of them this year as a bit of an experiment to see what I get

    I’m curious you put a new queen in because of the aggression and I wouldn’t you get rid of all the drones that were made from her eggs also cause they would have that same angry treat just curious

    • @pureyorkshirehoney
      @pureyorkshirehoney  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      That’s a good comment, this season I have bought in probably 90% of the queens which were already mated so the angry drones shouldn’t get chance to mate with any of my stock.

  • @BarryFlo58
    @BarryFlo58 ปีที่แล้ว

    I would say that hive is queenless and that's why they have emergency cells, probably an old queen with the swarm that was failing and she either died or they balled her

      Hi there,
      Yes I made that colony queen less the week before by moving her over to a Nuc, (I couldn’t bring myself to kill her).
      That’s why there were queen cells in the first section of the video.
      Strangely the original queen later died of unknown cause which is in this video th-cam.com/video/H5-Uw49cwCQ/w-d-xo.html
      Is hope you enjoyed the video, all the best for the new year.

    that is the hive i remove all bees and brood except for one frame of brood and two food frames and give them two boxes of un drawn frames feed ,leave at original location all others go to new location in same apiary to get fly back to mother hive but split into 4 + nuc's with 4 or more frames feed each equalize 24 hours later add bees if needed cut queen cells in 5 days 24 hours later walk in virgin queen.19 days later i check mother hive you should have nicer bees and all newly drawn and capped frames ready to split again. can turn one aggressive hive into 10 or more great nuc's

    If you re-queen, do you destroy all the drones also because if you don’t, and if those drones are from the queen, wouldn’t they be passing those jeans to other queens?

    • @pureyorkshirehoney
      @pureyorkshirehoney  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The queens that we bought in were already mated so the genetics of the angry colony won’t get passed on and die out. This year (2023) if all the colonies are good to work with then I will be rearing my own queens.

      @Jimflawless927 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@pureyorkshirehoney I understand that but the drones the First Queen the drones from her. Won’t hat get passed onto the queens in mating flights. Just a thought. All the vids I see never mention that. Thanks for the reply. Hey one question my first year keeping bees. Can you use a oxalic acid with winter feeding

    • @pureyorkshirehoney
      @pureyorkshirehoney  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@Jimflawless927 yes the drones could mate with a virgin queen and pass through some of her genetics. It can be a bit of a lottery when mating your own queens with other drones in the area from other hives. I’m thinking about ordering a breeder queen for next season so I’ll have good drones from her and I could graft eggs from her to make F1 queens.
      As for oxalic acid you want to be using it by vaporising through the entrance or trickling over the bees with a syringe. I’m going to trickle treat this year and hopefully do a video.
      Doesn’t really matter if you have fondant on but don’t try and feed them wet fed as it’s too cold and they won’t take it anyway.

    I had an aggressive hive. I put a BMH queen in and on my next inspection after introduction the hive was totally calm. Never even went through a brood cycle. The queen must just been really aggressive and that reflected on the bees. The new queens calm influence was instant. Wouldn't have believed it if I hadn't have seen it.

    Suggestion :
    I would put those x2 Cube Cinder Blocks so "Hole Spaces" are at the Hive Side.
    1) To Stop any Animal (Bird Nest) Hedgehog etc from getting stung or Buzzed by incoming Bees.
    As at the moment, it's just under the Landing Board. Busy Bees, coming & going !
    2) You can utilise those Blocks to Feed a Rachet Strap Through, Under, Up and Over for Strapping it down for Winter. Easy to Access.
    Wish my Warre had an under Space, like the Cute Pitched, Side Spaced Roof ! Warre's have. Got Column of Boxes Strapped to my Fence, (Type with upright Slats. Between the Hive and Front Garden.) Bees and laundry line don't mix !
    Did have an amazing x4 K incoming Swarm land on it, though ! Then in a branch on my Apple Tree. They walked off that, right into a x3 Box Langstroth Hive under that ! (Last Winter Dead Out.)
    A Bait Hive, to being my best Colony. No Removal, Relocation needed ! : June 2022. I guess a Local Beek lost their Best Queen, and Honey. My place has no local Beekeepers near by.
    A wonder that they found me and my place to settle and live. The Queen is a real beauty ! 👍
    Just love Hobby Hives, and a nice Summer ! 😎
    Like Lawrence and Black Mountain Honey Channel.
    Glad his Queen turned into a Calm Colony ! 😎
    Nobody wants Bees bouncing off them like they did here...
    Mine only do so, at the moment, as I lift the Lid to add more Fondant. 😆
    Don't blame them, it went from balmy 16C in mid November, here in Scottish Borders, to being Wet and Awful. Yuck !

    Terrible decision, Yorkshire has a good percentage of amm bees and you've introduced more foreign genetics which will just make it all worse. Why not try breeding from your best or obtaining something that will be less foreign

    • @pureyorkshirehoney
      @pureyorkshirehoney  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thank you for the comment Rob I appreciate your view. I wanted to work with that queen so much however it was just too aggressive. I requeened with a UK mated buckfast from Black mountain honey which may or may not be the correct decision for everyone but it suited us. As you mentioned in your comment, our end goal would be to breed our own queens until then will will buy in until we have sufficient numbers. I’m happy to buy one for your mated AMM queens next season if you sell them?

      @@pureyorkshirehoney thanks for your reply. The problem with your logic is that you will never ever have buckfast bees in your area, you'll never be able to breed from them successfully without having to introduce more buckfast later down the line so it's like having a hole in a bucket and continuing to pour water in instead of fixing the hole. It's a quick fix but not a permanent one. I was in the same position as you last year, I was lucky to find some great localish beekeepers who helped me out with some nice calm native/near native bees. Now when I breed from them in the coming seasons if any local keepers have foreign bees or a make up of them, ie buckfast I will likley have terrible bees again as will they unless they import more queens it's a vicious cycle.
