  • A First-Ride and Review of the 2020 Harley Davidson Street 500. Join me as I take the extremely popular entry level Harley Davidson for a first ride review through the beautiful Gold Coast Hinterland.
In today's video we ride one of the best selling and popular cruiser motorcycles on the market right now, featuring a learner approved 494CC V-twin, the Street 500 is the baby in the Harley line-up, but does that mean it isn't any fun?
We look at how the bike's engine and power, weight, handling, brakes and more and stick around to the end to find out my overall opinion on the Harley Davidson Street 500.

I took my motorcycle safety training class at Harley-Davidson on this bike, so I have good memories on it. That figure-8 turn in the box was tricky when starting out :) I still try that in open parking lots sometimes.

You both were lucky. My class only had enduros. (Granted I'm glad they let me use my Electra glide but the seats were a literal pain in the rear. Lol) The figure 8s my instructors freaked on me because the rest of the class were beginners. I did those in less than 4' apart from one another. Class was fun however.

I must say your review is spot on.... My partner learnt and just recently got her REs on a 2015 model. i will say to anyone looking to get this style Harley please be careful with your fuel! not the grade of fuel but the fuel light! we tested it out last night finally got the fuel light to come on at 350ks .... that's awesome considering my GSX-R 07 600 fuel light comes on at 220Ks on a good tank.... however i have at least 60ks in my tank the Harley only had 4ks,,, no I'm not joking! We got stuck on the side of the HWY without gas! If it wasn't for someone else that pulled over in their 4x4 we would of spent a lot longer on the side of the HWY! As a LAMS approved bike I can not fault them especially for those that are vertically challenged. just pay attention to the kms you travel especially if you going some distance and fuel stops are a bit between.... Awesome bike foe what it is.. entry level Lams bike and possibly more! As any bike they have their floors and to me the end decision is based purely on the rider and their preference of riding style. Again awesome review and highly agree with it.

I rented one of these from a Harley dealer for a week in San Diego, putting 600 miles on it through urban and twistie/hill country riding. I am 5'9"; I found the seat height comfortable. The engine sounded beautiful and developed very useable power. It is an attractive bike. People asked about it when I was parked. The 6 speed gearbox shifted smoothly, but finding neutral at a stop was not always as easy as on other bikes I have ridden. I noticed immediately how wide the bike felt.. At the end of 100 miles it was even wider.
I usually ride a Suzuki S40, which is not famous for high performance.. but the throttle response of my S40 is much more satisfying than on the Street 500 (both fully stock.) Granted, the S40 is nearly 100 lbs lighter... This bike is perfectly "meh" in every way, and hence, overpriced. I paid $2500 for my Suzuki with 1100 miles, in comparison.
I found the front suspension to be very soft. It "dives" deeply when front breaks are applied. Brakes are perfectly adequate. Fuel consumption was exactly as predicted - around 55mpg. I did not find the bike to be confident to ride aggressively in curves, as the reviewer intimates.
In San Diego traffic, it barely held on, as traffic flows at 75 mpg. I kept up, but didn't outrun anybody.
Overall, an adequate bike.. but I'd personally look elsewhere.

I remember I bought this large HD Eagle patch for the back of a denim jacket decades ago in LA and stuck it to a denim jacket I had around but have never worn it unless I bought a Harley...Now that I'm shopping around for a 2nd hand cruiser and came across the amount of these being sold as used on Bike sales interested me, but why so many? If anything I am tempted to have the dream of having a Harley and thus wearing that sleeveless denim jacket with it BUT being under 500cc didn't seem right...so here I am trying to see what the reviews are and unfortunately it didn't impress me, the bike, not the review. The dash seems they have taken the adage that less is more...well this is less is not enough. Plus the lack of torque and though I didn't see the rider seating on the bike but from pictures on other sites, it seems like a small bike where me as a 6ft 90kg male might look a little too big for it.
So why are there so many used 500cc Harleys for sale, yet the bike that I have also been looking at and was just about to buy if someone didn't beat me to it, the Vulcan VN 900 Classic, there aren't many around? Im guessing that all of these entry level people have had their fun and have now grown tired of whatever deficiencies this bike might have...just guessing.
Thanks for the reviews dude...See you on the SEQ roads!

You’d need a bigger bike. Unfortunately these bikes are not that customizable unlike their bigger touring bikes like I have. I bring up customization because just about any bike you sit in at your height will need some things switched out… most notable being the handlebars and seat. I used the street 500 for the MSF course (they supplied the bikes) and it felt too small for me at 5’9”. If it’s your first bike, you’re gonna want to start on something smaller anyway (regarding displacement) but at your height, you’d need something bigger (physical size). However, at the end of the day, the only way to know is for you to go sit on one. What felt small to me during my MSF course may be comfortable for you (I’d be shocked though)

You made the right call. The Street 500 was my learning bike and its overall pretty dreadful. The Honda is superior in every way except possibly looks but that is subjective. This is all coming from a Harley guy. The XG500, 750 and Street Rods are an embarassment to Harley Davidson. The build quality is awful and their reliability is at best, questionable.

Undoubteably the finest middle weight motorcycle that HD or any manufacturer has ever made. The build quality would make BMW green with envy. It is fast and comfortable and the japanese makers like kawasaki, suzuki and ducati have much to learn from HD's 500 street.

Extremely underpowered for a 500cc, terrible build quality and its also the only bike ive ever riden where the ergonomics hurt me after an hour or so of riding. My mates used to blast past me on their 225cc Yamaha Scorpios which was just embarissing.
