i think in 6 they should have kept the same actor for tommy as 5, and the new actor was tommy's friend, and tommy got killed by jason in the beginning. every time j watch the beginning i think his friend shoulda ran straight for the truck snd left him there. he tried to talk him out of it like crazy, certainly no reason to sacrifice yourself to save his stupid ass.
I agree... but u could also skip part 5 and still have a good coherent “trilogy”. Part 5 was unnecessary. Even I tho I’ll take it over Jason X and Part 8, part 5 could be easily removed from existence and u would still have good, effective Tommy Jarvis films.
It was the first Friday the 13th movie I ever saw as a young kid...My Grandmother had it on VHS and I remember watching it when I would stay with her in the early 90's.
Definitely my favorite of the whole series. The self aware tone was a breath of fresh air. The perfect balance of horror and comedy in my opinion, rivaled only by Bride of chucky on my list of favorite horror comedy movies. And I love Alice Cooper as well. One of my early favorite rock songs is Poison by Alice Cooper. Great review as always!

This is the thing that bothers me about this franchise. The people who treated Jason the worst way, bullied him and watched him him drown while laughing , they were kids too, same age as him. Sure the camp counselors were neglectful but the kids were sadistic and cruel. I'm assuming the reason why Jason goes after older teens/ young adults is because a) killing children in films for pure entertainment is frowned upon and b) this is a b-movie series that is sold with with sex.
But he went after Tommy in part 4? He kills a guy in a wheelchair in Part 2? They wanted to go in more of a comedy action direction in part 6, so Jason mostly goes after adult characters, there's no nudity, Jason suddenly likes children and our main two characters are written as super tough.

Pamela had killed every counsellor except Alice in 1 so it never got a chance to open and therefore kids never got a chance to come.

Yet Friday the 13th plays up the camp councilor and summer camp angle. Sort of how Michael Myers "stalks babysitters" yet his main targets are either Laurie Strode and family members and "babysitters" just are in his way or collateral damage.
I'm with CP as this one being my favorite out of the franchise. You have the legendary Alice Cooper, the horror nods like Karloff's general store, etc. Megan is my favorite woman out of the franchise for two reasons, one, she's super cute, and two, she drives a camaro, my favorite car that ever existed. Because working with children in a film is more of a pain. They work for less hours, often they can't act, they will struggle to stay focused while on set, they have a short attention span. Slasher movies are mostly fun but putting kids in danger is seen as a step too far. Most films won't use a whole lot of children unless they're necessary to the Plot like the Stephen King IT film.
My favorite FRIDAY as well! I have very fond memories of this from when I was a kid! Saw it in the theater with my sister. I have always loved the look of Jason in this film. Something about the tool belt and gloves gives him an added detail that just flows with his mask. I don't know. I understand your take on the look. I totally get it. I just always thought he chose the belt and gloves because it made him feel more hunter like. The feel of the film is awesome! The atmosphere is perfect. I love your reviews. I’m not sure if it’s the first film to do it, but I was mostly comparing to Wes Craven’s New Nightmare and the Scream movies. Jason Lives didn’t have the meta-humor as much as those movies but it still did it first.
One bit I find hilarious in this is when the little guy who was playing paintball in the woods with his executive friends shoots paint at Jason and Jason just looks down at his shirt then right at the man as if to say "I only just came back to life in this shirt and now you've ruined it.

There are actually kids in the first movie. At the beginning the killer (Mrs.Voorhees) walks through one cabin where the kids are sleeping then it cuts to the counselor's singing by the fireplace then the 2 counselor's go off upstairs or somewhere in the cabin to fool around them they get killed and the movie goes to present day and you see annie the cock walking with her backpack.

Part VI is where Jason became a parody of himself and the franchise slipped into the absurd, if that is even possible. Parts 2 to 4, you can tell that Jason is still vulnerable and can be killed. Part VI basically raised him from the dead into an indestructible zombie.
Ummmm yeah, you're not really stating anything that the fans of the franchise doesn't already know...and it's a BIG reason why Jason Lives is considered a huge fan favorite.
Part 7 and 8 took him more seriously again but they kept the indestructible superhuman strength aspect to him. In parts 2-4 he's implied to be more human and relies more on speed and surprise. But its never explained how he can recover so quickly after each film from his injuries.
What is it with these slashers turning into a farce during the 1980s? A Nightmare On Elm Street didn't take long, got a bit cheesy and action ordinated by part 3 onwards, Freddie started getting his ass kicked, doing all the one liners, Halloween was getting silly by part 4/5. 😜
I wonder about one thing. In practice Part 6 introduces zombie Jason. However Tommy says that Jason has to be laid to rest in the lake, the original place where he died in 50s. So was Jason a sackhead zombie in part 2. Obviously not, but this way movie implies that he was already a walkig dead. Oh Friday The 13th series makes no sense if we speak about some continuous logic :)
Jason Lives is definitely one of my favorites in the Friday the 13th franchise. Although I do really like parts 1 through 4 and I'm a bit iffy on 5, part 6 is where I really start to love and get into these films.

It sure as hell is my favourite, and I would recommend this movie to newcomers to the series (or the first one) even though it is the sixth installment, because in the Friday the 13th franchise almost all of the movies are the same.
Personally my favorite Friday Movie and just so happens I live just 5 miles away from the town it was filmed and also some Rob Zombies Halloween 2 was filmed there as well. In a few days I'm going to visit the Forest Green Camp with all the cabins there!
Part 1 actually has kids, but only for a second in the very very beginning -- they're sleeping in beds, and the teens are singing. Or "only for a minute" as the doctor says at the end of part 4. Oh, and Tommy in part 4, he was a kid!! And Reggie in part 5!
I know this would NEVER happen, but wouldn't it be really out there and ballsy if they made a Friday with Jason killing kids at a summer camp? Would be a completely different level and direction.

As others have said, this is the top Friday of the franchise for me. You can tell everyone involved in it had a great time. That especially shows in Harry Manfredini's score, which I consider a great one.
All time favorite F13 flick, always have been and always will be. Kills are golden and the comedy is awesome. Meghan and Tommy Jarvis are an iconic and interesting survival duo. I love everything about this film and wish more of the installments were like this one
Generally I think the assumption is you get better acting. A lot of high school films are the same, even a classic like Grease the cast all look like they're older than the teachers in the film. Same in the Sam Raimi Spiderman film, no way is that cast still in high school. Some John Hughes films use actors the right age for their roles. The cast in Ferris Bullers day off are all embarrassingly old though. The Goonies was well cast with child actors. I think the trouble is if you use any under 18s you can't do any nudity, they may still be studying so can only work part time etc, probably more hassle, more paperwork, got to do all the safegarding stuff. They still do it today the actor in Stranger Things playing Steve was actually about 10 years older than his character. Same with the Ouija films the cast are all mid 20s.
I have not seen this movie in years but I think the reason why Jason did not kill the little girl is because he heard a car drive up or a car door shut. Not sure I will have to watch it again but I still hope he did not want to kill the kids.
As a kid, this one was my favorite of the series. I saw it when it first came out in 1986 (I was 8 years old at the time). It was fast paced, fun and had a modern feel to it, but as I grew older, I saw its flaws. It really was a parody of it's far superior earlier instalments. Jason was more a joke at this point and the director tried too hard to be slapstick and tell the audience that this wasn't serious, but all in good fun. I wanted the comedy to be more unintentional or actually funny (like in part 5). This at times tried to be a serious movie, but the Tommy character overacted the entire time and Jason, as I mentioned, was more comedic, than menacing.
They turned it into an action/comedy full of rock music, car chases, cheap gags, it moved so far away from the core essence of the franchise. No nudity, weak kills, Jason walks around in broad daylight in wide open shots which looks silly. Too many nods and winks at the audience, breaks of the 4th wall....
This is solid entry. Like you said shot well and that resurrection scene is just done so well. Simplistic and ripped from Frankenstein but it's just to the point how Jason is just an absolute monster. This is my favorite entry for sure
Probably my favorite installment but I noticed a few things that are just a little off. In the Friday the 13th universe a mass murderer can be struck by lighting and brought back to life as an unstoppable killing machine. Ok, I'm cool with that. I mean I get it, but what I can't believe is that Jason is anchored just a few feet from the surface of the water ( the propeller blade cuts his face off) and I'm guessing there is going to be an investigation (2 murdered deputies and a sheriff who is broken in half no less tells me that) so when Tommy tells the investigators the killer (a walking corpse) is in the lake (you could probably see the top of his head being he is only a couple feet down) did it and the cops are going to just leave Jason in the lake?...And why didn't what's left of the boat just take off after Megan started the propeller to cut this walking killer zombie's face in half? One more thing-If Roy the fake Jason had killed Tommy in part 5 before Tommy diggs up the Man Behind the Mask that starts a chain reaction of slaughter the likes of which the world has never seen makes Roy the fake Jason a fallen hero. Thanks for trying Roy. F--k You Tommy!
I saw this in the theater as a teen. A friend of mine who shared my love of comics berated me for choosing this over (I shit you not) Howard the Duck. The tagline that was on the poster I saw said "Nothing This Evil Ever Dies." I have yet to see that same phrase anywhere but I remember thinking how awesome it was and how it made me buy Jason coming back from the grave a little more easily.
I like 4, 3 and 7 but if Im with someone that's never seen any of the F13 films I always show them "Jason Lives, "... it has a great balance of scares, laughs, lots of kills and is overall very fun and entertaining..... good review

The final chapter is better than part 6
Part VI is where Jason became a parody of himself and the franchise slipped into the absurd, if that is even possible. Parts 2 to 4, you can tell that Jason is still vulnerable and can be killed. Part VI basically raised him from the dead into an indestructible zombie.
Ummmm yeah, you're not really stating anything that the fans of the franchise doesn't already know...and it's a BIG reason why Jason Lives is considered a huge fan favorite.
Part 7 and 8 took him more seriously again but they kept the indestructible superhuman strength aspect to him. In parts 2-4 he's implied to be more human and relies more on speed and surprise. But its never explained how he can recover so quickly after each film from his injuries.
What is it with these slashers turning into a farce during the 1980s? A Nightmare On Elm Street didn't take long, got a bit cheesy and action ordinated by part 3 onwards, Freddie started getting his ass kicked, doing all the one liners, Halloween was getting silly by part 4/5. 😜
I wonder about one thing.
In practice Part 6 introduces zombie Jason.
However Tommy says that Jason has to be laid to rest in the lake, the original place where he died in 50s.
So was Jason a sackhead zombie in part 2.
Obviously not, but this way movie implies that he was already a walkig dead.
Oh Friday The 13th series makes no sense if we speak about some continuous logic :)

Jason Lives is definitely one of my favorites in the Friday the 13th franchise. Although I do really like parts 1 through 4 and I'm a bit iffy on 5, part 6 is where I really start to love and get into these films.

"Jason Lives" is easily the best standalone film of the Friday the 13th series. It sure as hell is my favourite, and I would recommend this movie to newcomers to the series (or the first one) even though it is the sixth installment, because in the Friday the 13th franchise almost all of the movies are the same.
I've met CJ Gram in person at Comic Con in AL, and it was great to talk to him in person.

Personally my favorite Friday Movie and just so happens I live just 5 miles away from the town it was filmed and also some Rob Zombies Halloween 2 was filmed there as well. In a few days I'm going to visit the Forest Green Camp with all the cabins there!
Part 4 and 5 are definitely the best in the entire franchise

This one is my favorite film in the series
Part 1 actually has kids, but only for a second in the very very beginning -- they're sleeping in beds, and the teens are singing. Or "only for a minute" as the doctor says at the end of part 4. Oh, and Tommy in part 4, he was a kid!! And Reggie in part 5!

I know this would NEVER happen, but wouldn't it be really out there and ballsy if they made a Friday with Jason killing kids at a summer camp? Would be a completely different level and direction.

As others have said, this is the top Friday of the franchise for me. You can tell everyone involved in it had a great time. That especially shows in Harry Manfredini's score, which I consider a great one.
This was by far the best Friday the 13th movie. Fun fact. The guy who wrote this, had wrote a sequel to this movie. Titled Jason Never Dies!
it's the ONLY movie to have kids at camp. which added to whatever suspense there was in the film (and past the comedy, there was some nice suspense).
My favorites are Parts 1, 3, 2, 4, Jason Lives, New Blood, Freddy vs Jason & the Remake
Somebody else probably said this earlier in the comments, but Jason doesn't kill kids. They're innocent to him. Jason's thing was no kids and animals.
These movie always tanked with critics and never tanked with fans believe me.
This is the one that seemed to always be on TV when I was a kid.

All time favorite F13 flick, always have been and always will be. Kills are golden and the comedy is awesome. Meghan and Tommy Jarvis are an iconic and interesting survival duo. I love everything about this film and wish more of the installments were like this one
Do teens in America actually look like thirty year olds in real life? Is there a reason they don’t hire real teens to play teens in horror movies?
Generally I think the assumption is you get better acting. A lot of high school films are the same, even a classic like Grease the cast all look like they're older than the teachers in the film. Same in the Sam Raimi Spiderman film, no way is that cast still in high school. Some John Hughes films use actors the right age for their roles. The cast in Ferris Bullers day off are all embarrassingly old though. The Goonies was well cast with child actors. I think the trouble is if you use any under 18s you can't do any nudity, they may still be studying so can only work part time etc, probably more hassle, more paperwork, got to do all the safegarding stuff. They still do it today the actor in Stranger Things playing Steve was actually about 10 years older than his character. Same with the Ouija films the cast are all mid 20s.

I have not seen this movie in years but I think the reason why Jason did not kill the little girl is because he heard a car drive up or a car door shut. Not sure I will have to watch it again but I still hope he did not want to kill the kids.

This was the first Horror movie I can remember seeing as a kid. Zombie Jason climbing out of his grave was scary as fuck to 3 year old me.
The Man Behind The Mask was my first Alice Cooper song, and I have to say that it was a pleasant introduction.

As a kid, this one was my favorite of the series. I saw it when it first came out in 1986 (I was 8 years old at the time). It was fast paced, fun and had a modern feel to it, but as I grew older, I saw its flaws. It really was a parody of it's far superior earlier instalments. Jason was more a joke at this point and the director tried too hard to be slapstick and tell the audience that this wasn't serious, but all in good fun. I wanted the comedy to be more unintentional or actually funny (like in part 5). This at times tried to be a serious movie, but the Tommy character overacted the entire time and Jason, as I mentioned, was more comedic, than menacing.
They turned it into an action/comedy full of rock music, car chases, cheap gags, it moved so far away from the core essence of the franchise. No nudity, weak kills, Jason walks around in broad daylight in wide open shots which looks silly. Too many nods and winks at the audience, breaks of the 4th wall....
In the script for this one, the ending has Jason's dad, Elias, paying money to the grave digger guy.
This is solid entry. Like you said shot well and that resurrection scene is just done so well. Simplistic and ripped from Frankenstein but it's just to the point how Jason is just an absolute monster. This is my favorite entry for sure
Probably my favorite installment but I noticed a few things that are just a little off. In the Friday the 13th universe a mass murderer can be struck by lighting and brought back to life as an unstoppable killing machine. Ok, I'm cool with that. I mean I get it, but what I can't believe is that Jason is anchored just a few feet from the surface of the water ( the propeller blade cuts his face off) and I'm guessing there is going to be an investigation (2 murdered deputies and a sheriff who is broken in half no less tells me that) so when Tommy tells the investigators the killer (a walking corpse) is in the lake (you could probably see the top of his head being he is only a couple feet down) did it and the cops are going to just leave Jason in the lake?...And why didn't what's left of the boat just take off after Megan started the propeller to cut this walking killer zombie's face in half? One more thing-If Roy the fake Jason had killed Tommy in part 5 before Tommy diggs up the Man Behind the Mask that starts a chain reaction of slaughter the likes of which the world has never seen makes Roy the fake Jason a fallen hero. Thanks for trying Roy. F--k You Tommy!

One of the best Fridays of all time!
I saw this in the theater as a teen. A friend of mine who shared my love of comics berated me for choosing this over (I shit you not) Howard the Duck.
The tagline that was on the poster I saw said "Nothing This Evil Ever Dies." I have yet to see that same phrase anywhere but I remember thinking how awesome it was and how it made me buy Jason coming back from the grave a little more easily.

I like 4, 3 and 7 but if Im with someone that's never seen any of the F13 films I always show them "Jason Lives, "... it has a great balance of scares, laughs, lots of kills and is overall very fun and entertaining..... good review
