  • It's time to answer the age old question "Where do you get ROMs from?" and I've taken this opportunity to explain why it's important to be careful downloading copyrighted materials. In fact, it's better and safer if you don't.
    NOTE: I do not condone the use of ROMs or ISOs. This video is for educational purposes only.

      I just got one from an smw rom. I could use some suggestions on where to get them but all the videos are the same. They can't suggest due to legalities. I understand.

    This is why I continue to get funny (or dirty) looks whenever I'm at the store. For instance, when I'm at the deli and I ask for a ½ lb. of roms. 😬
    Great video Greg, although you should have went full-on 80's PSA with it. That would have been gold!!!

    Hi Greg. Thanks to you I handled my Sega with Lunar. If you're up for it can you show me how to get my PS1 modded too? A lot of people are making it connect to wifi, Bluetooth, and otg (wtv that is)
    Can you show me a simple hack where I can just add about 50 or so titles to a stick and run my modded PS1 classic. Thank you Greg great video

    I've been using emulators for over a decade, and it still surprises me that people keep asking where to get roms. They're quite easy to get legitimately, if you know where to look. Illegitimate, even easier. But you're on your own with that one

I want specific and safe ways to get ROMs. I don’t mind paying for legit ROMs if I know I’m not going to brick my PC like I used to do with Limewire back in the day…

    For cartridge based consoles I try to go for a full(ish) set so I don’t have to search the web for individual roms. It ends up being a kind of a one and done thing. Unfortunately I can’t do that for the disk based consoles, maybe one day when I get a multi terabyte raid hard drive system. Haha

      Most of mine were downloaded individually. But back then it was a list of links, so it was just BAM BAM BAM! Now they want to put each game on it’s own freaking page...

      Greg's Game Room Honestly having so many roms at the get go can be overwhelming. But after clicking through so many pages and ads like you mentioned to get to one rom, hearing the news of all The trusted rom sites closing down, and since internet speeds are fast enough it’s better safe than sorry.

    One site you can safely name is Emuparadise. Why is it safe? Because Nintendo slapped a cease and desist order on the place. No Nintendo or Sony roms/iso to be found there. While the use of roms is a grey area, the law states we can have one backup of a song/game. Nintendo of course says this is BS and you have to pay for an approved copy on an approved system. They don't even like roms or Iso's taken from your own games for your personal use. Which is actual BS.

    • @GregsGameRoom
      @GregsGameRoom  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      I think if you ripped you own ROM from a cart that’s ok as a “backup.” But downloading one from somewhere else, I doubt the law would approve

  • @mormacfey

    These sites don't make money from the ROMs they make money from Ad revenue just like TH-cam. If that's so wrong, shouldn't it be also wrong that TH-cam makes money off of everyone else's creative IP?

    • @GregsGameRoom
      @GregsGameRoom  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    Most of us know of these games because we own them and the consoles have broken and now we have no way of playing the games. Or we just want to play the games on a different and more portable device, not some giant CRT TV.
    I would much rather re-buy these games in bulk on PC, that would be amazing. But these greedy copyright companies are short sighted, so they are passing out on very easy money. Sad.
    Imagine just going on steam deck and just hitting download and pay for the convenience of replaying games you already own with no strings attached or fear of viruses.
    To be fair, I already do that with all the games I liked when I have played on console and now want to also own on PC / steam deck. I spent about $8,000 doing so... And honestly barely play, I just collect them mostly. It's like I'm just paying to have a piece of history I may some day play or not play...cuz realistically I barely have time to play...but I do have money
    Just terrible business practice when the official and legal pathways have a worse service experience or most of the time no actual service at all for acquiring and playing old games. It's wild. You get punished for pirating and not pirating. The old games that are available for sale are often plagued by issues that they originally did not come with, like DRM, and other nonsense like risking losing access to a game any day. Ubisoft made that very clear with their 6 months warning....garbage trend. It's pushing gamers away to other means

      I would recommend just buying a retro handheld console with games off of Amazon. They range from 50.00 to 200.00 but have 50,000 to 200,000 games preloaded on a SD card. Most of the manufacturers are in different states that don't have copywrite laws that applies to them so you get to play any game you want and don't take a risk for liability.
