  • In this hardware review I compare the original model of the Commodore 64, affectionately known as the Breadbin, with the later C64c revision.

The litle cable is an earth lead, cant remember where to attach it. The serial port IEC port was for disk drives and printers daisy chained together. The user port could be used as a serial port for a modem. The cartrage port was used for games catrages ram expansion and some speed up devises like Super Cpu and faster floppy interfaces.

Excellent review. I really appreciate these longer in depth videos with more details and person reflections about it.

On the Datasette that's a grounding cable, presumably to reduce hum and interference affecting the quality of the tape signal. You see the same type of wire on the back of some vinyl decks.

I suspect it would have been hooked to a metal cabinet computer with a cassette port such as the PET.

I still have my C64c. Digitised sound is quieter on the 8580 SID because C= fixed a "bug" in the original SID design. One resistor sorts it.

Excellent video as usual. I still have my original Comm 64 from 1984. I also bought the C64 Maxi when it came out and I play it often. I received your new MSX book today and it’s incredible! Such amazing detail and information. Thank’s so much for your books. I’m a big collector of anything gaming related when it comes to books and magazines.

No RGB port on any Commodore 64, it's called a AV port and can only output either composite or S-video. Depending on model, year etc.
The loose space bar just needs clipping/taken off and re set, the metal bar under the key is loose.
To help clean them use a quality plastic cleaner/restorer that you'd use in automotive industry. That is what I use.

That's an earth lead on the C2N. It wasn't used in the UK. Usually just wrapped around out of the way, or cut off. The later C16/+4 Black versions didn't have them and we're sometimes later sold with a C64 adapter as the socket in them was a mini din type.

Exactly what I was looking for. I have the opportunity to get either one, both at the same price.

Great video - as always. The C64c's SID isn't really inferior - just different as a result of Commodore attempting to improve it and as a result unwittingly ruining the exploit that was used by programmers for sample playback. Most games from the late 80s take this into account and will play samples correctly at the same volume on both machines and nearly all of the older games have been fixed in recent years by C64 enthusiasts so that the mod is unnecessary.

I've got both. I started with the breadbin and later got the C64C - and I'm guessing the "C" probably stands for "cost reduced". The original is definitely more iconic, and the SID Chip is superior - the main difference being with the C64C with games like "Impossible Mission" is that the speech synthesis is barely audible. However the C64C's keyboard is probably easier to type on. I've also heard the C64C runs cooler and is less prone to breaking down.

You got it backwards. The 64c has the better sound chip, technically. It was improved from the earlier version as it used a lower voltage, and fixed a defect. The sound is more consistent from chip to chip, wheras the previous version one chip could sound different from each other. The problem with it playing digis was is that they were made possible due to an exploit using the flaw fixed in the new version. A defective filter I believe. The new version was more to technical specifications. The other issue is that by the time the new one came out, the old one had been used for so long so many games and tunes were designed around the old version, and didn't sound the same. This is why the old SID is preferred. Another foil to your comment is, commodore was really bad about just grabbing whatever out of the bin that'd fit. The new slimline 64C case can in fact fit the motherboard from the breadbin models, and naturally, some were sold that way if that's what commodore had in the bins on hand at the time. Mine is one. Hence why you have people talking about the (smaller) short board, which is what the 64C is supposed to have, and the longboard, which is what is commonly associated with the breadbin model. So all of those ports at the back line up the same, they have to. If a peripheral doesn't fit properly, then mayby the ports are a bit more recessed, or less, or maybe a lip around the opening, but they're all in the same spots. When you get them open, if the c64c doesn't have the longboard, but the smaller one, try pulling the longboard and putting it in the 64C case, and you'll see it fits. Though you'll need the keyboard brackets if you intend to use it that way. Those are available.

It's weird but the way you described both units - I can actually smell the nicotine. Thanks lad. Great review. I miss my C64 and playing the Ultima series on it and using one of the first windowing environments for the C64; GEOS.

After having watched, I've still no idea the real differences. But then again, I only caught 1 out of 5 words.

You cant swap the sid chips because they run at different voltages. Also the C had less chips in it because it was more intergrated.

@@TheLairdsLair i enjoy your videos and I love the c64, the poor basic made learning asembly more important and my understanding of computers deaper. I was hoping you would do a side by side comparison of the graphics and sound. Keep up the good work. regards Peter.

I didn't want to push the video over half an hour and the breadbin doesn't work anyway, as I said in the video, so perhaps a video for another day.

you're doing a review and you don't know what the 2nd port is on the back of the C64? It's a Serial Port for a floppy disk drive or printer. Quick google told me that :D
