Yuja Wang is an incredible pianist who plays with such finesse and delicacy. She gets every note to sing in harmony and all are crystal clear. hope she comes to Australia one day.
She plays most of this with incredible accuracy and interpretation, but I think her attempt to impress with speed clouds parts of the piece, especially the octave passages at the ending. Listen to Horrowitz interpretation at a live performance and see the difference.
OMFG!!!! I've seen some of her videos, including her Cziffra's Fly of the bumblebee and she is incredibly skilled. I've never seen anybody to play like this. Her hands are SO F$%& FAST.
By the way Carman Fantasy is more or less based on the Carman legend which tells the story of a beautiful gypsy named Carman and her lover bullfighter Escamillo. When Horowitz plays it, though the climax unquestionably falls on the bullfight, in many parts he tries to play with such gentle subtlety that one has a good reason to wonder how much he must have desired to absorb and then bring out the feminine from the original love "fantasy."
Yujia is the correct spelling, Yuja is the name known by Americans. But that's not important, we feel her soul from what she plays, doesn't really matter how her name is spelled.
@PowerofTrueInsight IDID see it. She's simply amazing in terms of accuracy/energy/overall technique. Her playing IS missing a certain mood that Horowitz brings to this piece, but she is in no way inferior in terms of technique. Her hands actually look far more relaxed than Horowitz's.
I personally think Horowitz play it very beautiful. But Yujia Wang play it very enegetic. Both of them are very good. Can't compare cuz both of them are special.
@th3wing3dpaint3r What do you think of the other video titled "Carmen from the practice room"? There, in my opinion, a more relaxed yet also more audacious Yuja actually plays better, comparable to Horowitz. Watch if Horowitz appears tense throughout his performance. The "practicing" Yuja, on the other hand, turns out not only dynamic but clearly more at ease, particularly in those parts where technical demands arise.
@emma1021poo vkgfx (dot) com has a pdf of all the Horowitz scores, last I checked. Carmen Fantasie is among them... though there are multiple editions, and each is notated differently. I'm pretty sure he never officially released his scores of them, so they're transcribed by ear... and he changed notes from recording to recording.
@DickKnowsBest The problem isn't at all with Yuja's playing. It's Horowitz's celebrity status. You bring in someone less famous, with equally good technique, and it's sure to be a butchery. You'll probably find some idiotic post claiming "Liszt had better technique" somewhere around here. Just because they heard so. Good Job Wang! And It's must feel great to be compared to Horowitz at such an early stage in your career. You deserve it!
I prefer Horowitz because of the urgency on his face in some of those passages while he played it perfectly in 68 at Carnegie. Yuja is awesome though. Definitely one of my favorite pianists.
This might sound comic: from all on TH-cam, the best psychiatric expert is needed to provide an immediate therapeutic rescue for demosj. He apparently suffered a life-threatening trauma after watching Yuja, a female pianist, jumping on a bull and fighting out a tough bullfight. To demosj, how dared that young woman even get into a masculine fight in the first place, after our great warrior Horowitz once bruised his nose and blooded his fingers...?
my family is lucky i dont play those kind of songs. they HATE listening to me play the piano loudly; they're almost against me playing the piano, something i CANNOT live without :'(
She has a monster technique, easily capable of handling this Horowitz finger twister. Maybe that's the problem - it's too easy for her and so I miss the element of risk which would make it exciting. It's so put away, so immaculate, that you never feel she's veering close to the edge. In a piece like this it's crucial to make the audience believe that you're pushing your luck, even if you're not. Otherwise it's not exciting. Clean is great, but it should still be a bullfight.
I love this piece, but if you listen to this one and "Carmen from the practice room" you will see (hear?) that they are different from each other. Even though the practice one was probably rougher than this one, I like it better for some odd reason...
HI, i have seen the video(before commenting above). I can't agree with you that she's better. In term of clarity (not audio quality) and precision of the presentation, Vladimir H. is ahead much a head. However each of us do have our own way/trend of grading musician. :)
Please, somone tell me where i can buy this music to play. Not a CD, an actual Music Score, i want to learn this. All i can find is piano and flute/violin/trumpet solo, no. i Want just the piano solo as played in the video. Thanks!
@fuoconuit oh i didnt mean in a bad way, i say goodluck to her and im glad she found the world and shared her talent with us. my dream would be to play like this, not a millionair something which i can be proud of personaly.
@fuoconuit don't compare horowitz to yuja wang (or anyone else), it's not a very fair comparison. also, she's 23 right now, so she has a lot of time to grow as a musician
Well, if she invites the comparison, I'll say I prefer Horowitz... But Wang is 23. Horowitz lived into his eighties. By that logic, she has sixty years to go before she's had the time to improve herself as a musician to the extent to which Horowitz did.
how does she lack strength....unless you mean her physical traits (small hands). then thats probably true.... but the Carmen fantasy doesnt really require that much physical strength so i dont know what your talking about
@pvn2474 An interesting point. That said, attention to the other vid titled "Carmen from the practice room." There a far more relaxed, though a bit rough, but clearly more audacious Yuja actually played far better, arguably not far from Horowitz. Watch how tense our great Horowitz appears throughout his performance. The "practicing" Yuja, comparatively, turns out to be not just equally dynamic but also literally more at ease especially, IMHO, in those parts where technical demands arise.
es muy buena, toca perfectamente lo que no me parece es que esta muy apresurada en algunas partes no deja que se desarrolle el sonido parece que tiene prisa por terminar. horowitz la perfeccion.
well its extremely difficult to tell whos better since they are playing different pianos in different size of room with different recording techniques.and just happened to notice the piano yuja is playing some of the keys are outta tone!
No doubt that Horowitz is much more accurate, his performance is really so much better, but we shall remember, that this girl is only 21 at this time. How did Horowitz play it when he was 21? Let's wait 40 years to judge her so hard. But surely she really has a long way to go to reach Horowitz' precision in this piece :-)
It is foolish is to interpret what I said as suggesting someone with less than proficient technique should play this. What I'm saying is that Wang appears to dispatch this piece without effort or struggle and therefore misses the opportunity to create excitement. Somehow mechanical perfection and art are a bit contradictory. Whether or not this piece was difficult for him, Horowitz gave the impression of barely controlling it, and that WAS exciting. It's the IMPRESSION of risk I'm after.
Not BAD !!!!!!!!!! I believe the Horowitz interpretation better and probably the best ever but her interpretation is great ! Maybe she miss a bit the "fortissimo" and the "pianissimo" and the mystere of the variations. So called. I think this piece should be played as a knife run through the butter. Fast, precise and direct.
Vladimir Horowitz is much better....he's presentation, is 10X better... so, no comparison to him. However, i can't underestimate this girl's talent, she's higly skilled and amazing for her age!...
2:59 and 15 seconds ahead. That is the really difficult part. Please listen how unclear she plays it. Very. Same with the other video from the practice room. Horowitz' is very, very clear. Wang's is very unclear. Especially that part. And her touch and sound of her playing, the creativity of it, depth and fullness of the sound which comes from her hands is nothing to compare with for example Lang Lang. She is a brillant pianish, of course, but maybe some get seduced by her very naughty radiation
Yuja Wang is an incredible pianist who plays with such finesse and delicacy. She gets every note to sing in harmony and all are crystal clear. hope she comes to Australia one day.
She leaves me speechless. All of her performances are totally captivating. Such a wonderful pianist and stunningly beautiful.
I love Yuja Wang=D!!! she's amazing!!! great skills!!!
shes perfect! i want to imitate her in everyway i can! whatever it is she just has it all
OMG! Such perfection in so young a career! She is truly amazing!
Beutiful playing, from a beutiful Pianist! what else could I say!
She plays most of this with incredible accuracy and interpretation, but I think her attempt to impress with speed clouds parts of the piece, especially the octave passages at the ending. Listen to Horrowitz interpretation at a live performance and see the difference.
Very powerful !!! Brilliant !!
That said, I hurry to add that, of all his wonderful performance of Carmen Fantasie, Horowitz plays the concluding notes supremely.
Whoah, the best thing about her is her energy.
2:58 .....
very explosive~~
rare to hear in other recordings!!
OMFG!!!! I've seen some of her videos, including her Cziffra's Fly of the bumblebee and she is incredibly skilled. I've never seen anybody to play like this. Her hands are SO F$%& FAST.
the only one woman with a brain, musical thinkin, a piano tecnich similar to the great Horowitz!!!!!! i love u Yuja
Who is she ? Absolutely wonderful execution ... more clear tha Volodia !! Bravo bravo bravo.
astonishing technique.
ive rarely heard carmen fantasie played so easily.
By the way Carman Fantasy is more or less based on the Carman legend which tells the story of a beautiful gypsy named Carman and her lover bullfighter Escamillo. BRAVO !! BRAVO !!
She was already amazing but she's getting even better. Watch out Horowitz, Hamelin & co...

Her hands actually look far more relaxed than Horowitz's.
Horowitz didn't just play the notes, he poured passion, life exuberance, and everything under the sun into the piece.
He arranged it didn't he?
Everything sounds better in a concert hall then in a practice room with probably wrong sound.
It might even be the same piano :)
Ma che BRAVA!!!!!!!!
I personally think Horowitz play it very beautiful.
But Yujia Wang play it very enegetic.
Both of them are very good. Can't compare cuz both of them are special.

her techniques are superbb
I do agree(out of tone few times), but the girl is good, no doubt! :)cheers!

@elldabest55 just naturaly talented? did you forget ALL the hard work she had to put into it???????
SUPERB.
magnifique!
Galway's pretty generous with the spotlight here.
This is preferable to the overly aggressive approaches of Matsuev & Kissin.

I think that what is necessary is just not to necessarily flip quickly.
But it is uncanny.
my family is lucky i dont play those kind of songs. they HATE listening to me play the piano loudly; they're almost against me playing the piano, something i CANNOT live without :'(

@fuoconuit oh i didnt mean in a bad way, i say goodluck to her and im glad she found the world and shared her talent with us. my dream would be to play like this, not a millionair something which i can be proud of personaly.
wow- this compares to horowitz' version. wonderful.
But I have to admit, she is desperately talented.
i can't find the music sheet for this
where can i find it? OMG
amazing.
[:
@sio77nvd4 Soo Vooldo = Horowitz?
excelente
@fuoconuit don't compare horowitz to yuja wang (or anyone else), it's not a very fair comparison. also, she's 23 right now, so she has a lot of time to grow as a musician
haha, she'd tear you apart
Well, if she invites the comparison, I'll say I prefer Horowitz...

That's not fair,
she's using kung fu!
/ but this amazes, while Horowitz haunts. I'm weird that way.
@pvn2474 An interesting point. That said, attention to the other vid titled "Carmen from the practice room." Whats the whole song called
es muy buena, toca perfectamente lo que no me parece es que esta muy apresurada en algunas partes no deja que se desarrolle el sonido parece que tiene prisa por terminar. horowitz la perfeccion.
Whos the composer?
well its extremely difficult to tell whos better since they are playing different pianos in different size of room with different recording techniques.and just happened to notice the piano yuja is playing some of the keys are outta tone!
she might have been in the practice room practicing this song.
Do she ever play anything other than these stunt pieces?
lol yah thats a little overkill but great nonetheless =)
too bad the video isnt in sync. she plays soooo great!
Horowitz is a man of course he plays it heavier.but not so clear elastic as yuja.
faster than horowitz haha
yeh!
Maybe Franz Mohr could help her out?
omg. i have never seen a pianist rip it like that. wtf

She´s really musical and acrobatic pianist but lack of physical power and strength is obviously her weakness.
I disagree, I think the recording of the turkish march from yuja sounds better in the rehearsing room.
easy there now...
It is foolish is to interpret what I said as suggesting someone with less than proficient technique should play this. 666 O.o
i dont think so! theres a vid of horowitz playing the same piece , you can tell the difference! yuja is way better!!!
Asian...
