Same xD I accidentally clinged onto the Teostra while it prepared Nova, and I was like "fck it, it's too late to run anyways" It all ended up in a huge explosion for both us us that luckily didn't kill me, and my discharge explosion brought down the monster as well so my friend could hit it. Arrekz Gaming does great ones too. Gaijin and his are similar in style. I tried another one, the one that's above Gajins when you search "Mh Rise Switch Axe Guide" but his is just the moves listed one after another. I like this kind of organization better. Especially the switch skills having their own category amongst other organizational tendencies they share.
I'm usually not very good at video games. As much as I love them, a lot of the time the mechanics just don't click and I either fudge combos or just don't have great skill building. Watching this video in it's entirety and realizing that these are all things I already know and do with the Switch Axe makes me so proud of myself. :')
Great video! I had a few things I wanted to add after using this weapon almost obsessively in Rise: Downward Fade Slash - Press back relative to character and ZR while in sword mode to perform a strong attack that repositions your character. The recovery on this attack seems like it takes a while, but you can morph straight back into sword or side hop before the animation ends. Using morph attacks after rolling/moving forward will make your character move forward a bit while executing the switch attack. I frequently use the morph from sword to axe after rolling for free evade extension. Difference between Rise and World in this aspect is that you don't have to roll in Rise to achieve the extra movement. Invincible Gambit - If you press X after finishing the 3rd attack, you will do an axe swing similar to morphing back to axe while moving. However, if you press back (relative to character) and X you will perform a multi-hitting Wide Sweep backwards. Soaring Wyvern Blade - After performing the Advancing Slash you have several immediate options so you aren't stuck in the recovery animation: 1st - Pressing ZR immediately after you land makes you do that advancing morph back into Axe mode and lets you move immediately if you need to get out of dodge. 2nd- Pressing A immediately after you land will let you do a double slash (that you can aim by pointing your left stick towards where you want to hit), which you can then use to go straight back into a Zero Sum, and then rinse and repeat. Happy hunting my dudes!
Really like how you breakdown the weapon into a very simple to understand way. Things I have missed in other guides I picked up here because of the presentation. Great intro to the weapon, and I am gonna have to try it now!
14:36 I want to inform you (all) that Compressed Finishing Discharge is not immune to knockback during its whole duration. It is only immune during the "preparation" stance the hunter takes before the explosion. There is knockback immediately after the explosion sets off. I hope this is useful, as this is one of the major differences to the regular Finishing/ Zero Sum Discharge.
@@gianghuynh9570 Hahaha you made my day. I think most of us going online know we should be using 1 deco fro flinch free, but it is fun sometimes trolling LS users since they are the ones used to flinch others instead flinch themselves
Just wanted to throw this in here: When comboing into any morph attack from an evade, you have 360 degree pivot range. Really really nice when you need to sharply turn completely around out of a quick sidestep. 👌🏻 Great vid Gaijin!
Random tip: Soaring/Flying Wyvern Blade does big damage than can stagger a non-target monster, so you can use it to immediately ride it and go ham at the start of your quest.
Invincible gambit works the same way (and, indeed, so do all damaging silkbinds or aerial shots). If all three hits connect, it's pretty much a guaranteed mount on a non-target.
Changes on the SwitchAxe made me want to play it even more, I started with CB for a few missions, but then enjoyed the SwitchAxe... Then I unlocked Soaring Wyvern Blade, and real life just began, using this weapon is now so much enjoyable, climbing on monsters, stabbing them to release a lot of explosions, then a big one, then, while pushed back by the blast you decide this is not the end and plunge back, leaving a delayed explosion on the monster's body, ending on your feet, usually looking away from THE EXPLOSION ! Gosh ! The feeling of power... Longsword better watch out, we are stealing the epicness of anime !
It is possible to do the Element discharge by doing the zero sum discharge with the gauge almost filled. It works for the first hit and if the gauge is fully filled after that hit, you will latch on to the monster
Amazing guide, as always! Quick tip if I may: you don’t actually need three Wild Swings before you can do the Heavy Slam. If you press X around the time the second swing from single press of A is in front of you, you can go right into the slam. Needs some getting used to, but really shortens that „combo“ :)
Swaxe has been such a delight to use, and every time i see your posts about how much fun you and your daughter are having while I work makes me want to jump right back in when I get home! Thanks for the tutorial, I picked up some info I didn't know before.
Ive been watching for awhile and have greatly appreciated you contribution to the community! Playing for 14yrs or so. I was watching a vid of you explaining Monster Hunters meaning to you. My Son's 4 and has started Hunting with me :,] its the best feeling ever!!!
This is such a good tutorial! Switch Axe is one of the weapons I haven't really used since I started with Tri but after watching this it's the next weapon I'm using
another note about invincible gambit: if you hit x in the direction you are moving, you'll do the normal side chop swing, but if you aim in the direction you came from, you'll do the double side chop for even more damage
Another huge tip I have for the weapon, especially if you've come from using it in World a lot, is morph attacks can face almost any direction at almost any time. Roll past a monster, hold back, then morph, and you'll wind up facing it. Especially useful since morph attack is the quickest way to cancel out of diving wyvern, which will often require repositioning afterwards anyhow. SA got a huge mobility upgrade in World, and in Rise it got even better. I feel like I can be basically anywhere I want to be at any time.
Im glad to know that i already knew most of this, but i did lean some things to make me keep on the offense even more. I used to be a Kinsect Glaive main in 4 and World, mostly for the mobility. That said however Swaxe wad my first weapon back in 3u, and honestly i missed it. Thank you for the tips, and may RNGesus smile upon you
Watching your videos made me branch out and try new weapons and playstyles, thanks for the inspiration! I originally was mostly using GS and a couple different LBGS, but i've recently tried your 2.0 Raging Claws build and have fallen in love with the aerial DB style, especially on Narwa hunts.
There's one more morph attack that a lot of folks don't seem to be aware of: from sword mode, pull back on the stick after any attack and hit ZR to do a fading morph into axe. It hits pretty quickly where the hunter was standing while repositioning you backwards by about half a roll. There is a bit of a recovery animation, but it's extremely useful for avoiding short swipe attacks mid-combo!
There's also anithe back-rolling attack. You pull back on the stick and press A following any attack in Axe mode. This allows you to swing the axe behind you to reposition as well
Thanks Gaijin! I just got back into MHR on my PC after playing a LOT on Switch when it first came out and I've been wanting to get into the switch axe. This video was PERFECT!
I've been away from the monster Hunter community for a long time since rise came out because I didn't have a switch, finally got it on computer and going through all the motions again and watching your videos is nostalgic as hell. Love what you're doing keep up the good work.
I'm on the cusp of putting HH down briefly for Switch Axe. Just wanted to say thank you for the tidbits. Learned a couple of new things from the video.
This is my first monster hunter game and I started with the dual blades because they were easier to pick up at first. But after watching your tutorial I switched to the switch axe and I love it! Thank you so much for this video it's gold for beginners.
Compared to the other SA tutorials I've seen this has been so to-the-point. Informative without being excessive. Other videos seemed to be long just to get more ads played. GaijinHunter spoils us
Extra Tip: The blast after the Soaring Wyvern Blade can be boosted by the Rapid Morph skill, if you morph at the same time the blast goes off. Exact Timing: Sidestep after the "Soaring Wyvern Blade" > "Sword: Morph Slash" (direction input+ZR [7:26]) = bLaSt BiG BoOm
Gaijin I love your videos, you helped me a lot, but a LOT with monster hunter, and honestly, without your help I think I could not have been the hunter that I am now, thank you so much
A small tip from a SA first timer: The Forward Overhead Slash combos right into Fading Slash (like most other things). These 2 attacks follow almost the exact same path back and forth and they reach really high. It is relatively fast and gets you in and out quick while dealing decent damage. They are good for feeling out or baiting a new monster. It also looks kinda funny.
Really great video. I’ve been using the switch axe since World and thought I had it pretty much mastered in Rise but you managed to teach me some new tips and tricks. Really clear and concise info. Hope to see more of these on other weapons too!
Great guide as always. Been watching your videos for years now. Side note, the only thing you missed, and it's really minor but good to know, you can press ZR at the end of the dive on Soaring Wyvern to transform back into axe mode. Also, really glad you mentioned that the Condensed Discharge sends other hunters flying.
Your love for the Swag Ax shines through once more! =D Been my main since MHP3rd and I fell in love all over again once I got the diving stab ability and found out you can use it after an amped ZSD.
What made switch axe be such a good option in rise is the incredibly good hit boxes so the side slash actually dodges thing in a way that makes sense. Just that keeps you alive so much without having to sheath and run, and then catch the monster again.
Great Video! At the moment I heard the background music I thought: Haven't already heard that before? Turns out it's Pokke Village theme, such a nostalgic feeling
Nice tutorial. Been maining GS for over 10 years now and I finally branched out into other weapons (SA, IG, GL, LS & Bow for now) and this really helps. ^^
Started with LBG but I got envious of all the fun my blademaster friends were having so I’ve been maining IG for most of Rise so far. Now that I have final forms for all elements and status on the bug stick I think I’m gonna give SA a try. Looks cool as hell and with that Almudron armor set already being so sexy it would make the fashion easy too
As a Swaxe main coming from World/Iceborne, the new armor skill(s) and overall improved QoL has been so nice in Rise. Thanks for the tutorial, it's always appreciated!
Even though I played the entire village quests and some hub quests with the Swax (now I'm playing the dual blades) I still learned something! Great video!
Holy crap, I was skeptical about Switch Axe at first because I felt it was a bit underwhelming in World, but the Switch skills and Silkbind moves basically remove all of the downsides I felt with the weapon. Definitly gonna try this one out sor sure! Thanks for the great guide, hoping to see Lance soon!
Thank you for this video. The Swagaxe is rapidly becoming my favorite secondary weapons. I love using the new morphing attacks for heavy damage. Fade attacks and morphing attacks facing away from the monsters keep me out of danger if I have the sense to not overcommit. The soaring blade is almost as fun as the blast dash. The weapon is so versatile and it sort of feels like a mix of sword and shield and a gunlance, focusing on reach and mobility.
Something I noticed for Flying Wyvern Blade is that you can morph attack back to axe immediately upon landing, which shortens the endlag once you land on the ground and helps you reposition!
Great video! I picked up switch axe for the first time when Rise released because of your excitement in the demo videos, and I enjoyed it a lot. One addition, I don't know if you need high Rapid Morph to make this combo worth using over the one you mentioned for big damage. But I think you can get an ever higher damage combo by doing axe mode forward X (advancing X switch skill), morph sword double hit, sword triple hit, morph axe double hit, then repeat. The advantage is you filter out the basic morph sword hit which is mediocre, and all the additional combo parts are either beefy or multiple hits. Admittedly this is only doable if you can repeatedly pull off the advancing X in axe mode without getting out of position. Works against larger monsters, not so much vs smaller ones where you'll advance out of whatever sweet spot you're in.
after way over 100 hunts with the bow I tried half of it with great sword, now I'm at switch axe. this came as a great refresher since all the weapons got new movesets
I wanna take a moment to leave another comment and thank you for this video. thanks to you showing me the morph combos slash axe finally has clicked for me in this game in a way it never has bvefore.
A good combo for cutting tails is the forward overhead slash into a retreating fade slash. It positions you right back to the perfect angle to do another forward overhead slash. Both of them deal heavy damage for cutting tails.
A few things to add: -You can use ZR while falling to use a morph attack midair -Pressing back and ZR after a normal attack will do a fading morph attack.
I remember my first Gaijin tutorial, mh4u charge blade, no voice, just a lot of text to read and man, even tho I know how to use a weapon I will always watch the new tutorials, always learn something new. Happy Hunting!
I was a Glade weapon on MHW, then I got bored and tired of that weapon. Switch Axe and Gunlance made me to play Monster Hunter a lot. It's so satisfying seeing the explosions. I can't wait to use the chainsaw. Is it a sword? Is it an axe? No, it's a Switch Axe.
Fun thing about the compressed elemental discharge: it procs counterstrike ( the ability, when you get knocked back your attack increases a bit), if it hits other players, it's really fun to use online WITH FRIENDS. Please, don't use it with randoms.
One VERY important thing about Invincible Gambit, as well as other Silkbinds with super armour You are STILL vulnerable to being stunned while tanking the damage, even in the animation, leaving you wide open unless you have Stun Resist 3
Found this out the hard way with Tobi-Kadachi's charged needles. I'm pretty sure that, along with Bishaten/Somnacanth's flash attacks are the only moves that insta-stun.
Ahh the best weapon. My most used weapon by FAR in Rise. Although I'm using a lot of weapons in Rise regularly. Switch-Axe, SnS, Hammer, Insect Glaive and just this week I fell in love with the Dual Blades.

Looks cool as hell and with that Almudron armor set already being so sexy it would make the fashion easy too
These guides are always so great, thank you!
I was getting the basics but needed a bit more mechanics explanation with what the buffs meant. Thank you!!!!
Amazing guide man! Thanks a million for an awesome guide for one of the best weapons in the game!
Always amazing content, thanks so much again for all of your hard work on these!
It’s always nice to have a Gaijin Hunter video. I use switch axe on my main hunter and it’s super fun.
Something I noticed for Flying Wyvern Blade is that you can morph attack back to axe immediately upon landing, which shortens the endlag once you land on the ground and helps you reposition!
Thank you for the tutorial, me and my Gf are now in love with this weapon.
I love switch axe and have been using it since M.H.3 U! But this video was still very helpful and showed off some nice new tricks. Thank you!
after way over 100 hunts with the bow I tried half of it with great sword,
now I'm at switch axe.
this came as a great refresher since all the weapons got new movesets
I wanna take a moment to leave another comment and thank you for this video. thanks to you showing me the morph combos slash axe finally has clicked for me in this game in a way it never has bvefore.
A good combo for cutting tails is the forward overhead slash into a retreating fade slash. It positions you right back to the perfect angle to do another forward overhead slash. Both of them deal heavy damage for cutting tails.
A few things to add:
-You can use ZR while falling to use a morph attack midair
-Pressing back and ZR after a normal attack will do a fading morph attack.
Fading morph attack? Wow, after hundreds of hours with this weapon I’m still learning things.
Thanks for linking this again, Gaijin, this was a great tutorial!
This weapon looks great
this guide is still great. the structure is easy to follow and learn from.
I remember my first Gaijin tutorial, mh4u charge blade, no voice, just a lot of text to read and man, even tho I know how to use a weapon I will always watch the new tutorials, always learn something new.
Happy Hunting!
Been playing Monster Hunter for over 10 years now and I still learned some new things today. Thanks for this guide
wow, was thinking of trying this weapon out! this video gave me just the push i needed. thanks gajin!
I've gotten a rapid morph 3 talisman, which made me curious about switchaxe. Thanks for the tutorial!
I'm shook. I thought I had mastered this weapon. Nope! leaned some sweet stuff which makes this weapon even more awesome! gotta love it!
Dude this came out right on time, i just finished making my armor set for switch axe and i was going to look up videos on how to use it properly.
This is perfect timing. Just when I thought of learning another weapon aside from long sword.
Fun thing about the compressed elemental discharge: it procs counterstrike ( the ability, when you get knocked back your attack increases a bit), if it hits other players, it's really fun to use online WITH FRIENDS. Please, don't use it with randoms.
Woohoo, look who's back in the arena. Glad to have you back!
One VERY important thing about Invincible Gambit, as well as other Silkbinds with super armour
You are STILL vulnerable to being stunned while tanking the damage, even in the animation, leaving you wide open unless you have Stun Resist 3
Found this out the hard way with Tobi-Kadachi's charged needles. I'm pretty sure that, along with Bishaten/Somnacanth's flash attacks are the only moves that insta-stun.
finally, lets gooo
Yes, i've waited for this weapon guide
Thank you for your time and effort! I enjoyed the video. Have been wanting to give this weapon a try but was intimidated. :D
Ahh the best weapon. My most used weapon by FAR in Rise. Although I'm using a lot of weapons in Rise regularly.
Switch-Axe, SnS, Hammer, Insect Glaive and just this week I fell in love with the Dual Blades.
i hate the game for 10 hours or more and discovered that weapon and than your video ! thanks man ❤❤❤
Thought I would try Swaxe for the first time this game and I am so glad I did!
