I recently put together a juniper forest with common junipers from Herons. I’m impatiently waiting for the growing season. It’s my 1st attempt at bonsai so fingers crossed they make it through the winter. Great videos, thank you Sir.

I am glad to click this nice video, I just planted 50 + similar Japanese maple trees in my yard, too cold to leave them in pots here, I planted them in yard and used black fomy tubes to protect their main stems.

@Kallyssa Starfall Thanks, I collected very small leave green maple tree seeds from a big maple tree, the seeds are quite tiny but I got nice seedlings from them.
@@tylerwaxman7512 I live in canada and japanese maples will not grow outside here. I ordered some to try and grow them inside but so far none of them have grown. Japanese maples are so so so pretty. I am happy yours have grown! good luck making them into bonsai if that is your plan :)
@Kallyssa Starfall Thanks. Here in new England we could have -20F in winter. I gave them a lot of water before the cold winter and covered them with black fomy tube that I bought from HomeDopt. I also grow some native maple trees for grafting, since those native ones are so hardy, I guess grafted Japanese maple trees will be okay for even -30F. I am trying to make them into big bonsai in my back yard, not inside the house : ).

Thank you Peter, your tree with the graft looks very much like my tree, time to start chopping off the ugly roots and make some decisions so very timely video.
I know that an ordinary lopper makes for a good strength exercise, but a compound lopper would be very convenient for the almost-impossible cuts you may have to make. Cuts the effort by half. Having said that, I'd like to add that all your videos are a delight to watch.
Thank you I'm a beginner lost a few with bad decitions but I'm learning , you give me the encouragement to carry on .
I'm still worried about cutting what to cut and when .
Iv put bubble wrap around my pots and put them up against my conservatory wall under trees so hopefully they are protected until spring .
I get excited watching your videos and encouragement for the outcome.

Does it freeze where you live? Bubble wrap may help protect for freeezing winds combined with sunny days (so the soil won't dry and the roots die off) but when the temps are well above 0 degrees i don't think protection is neccesary.

Great video and instructions 💓💓💓Oh and yesterday I did take the wire off my Maple Trees and it did take. And all the leaves fell off and they were growing outside and I potted them so they are indoors

Great video pete. We need more maples!. Unfortunately the deshojo graft i have is like a broom style but its coming out great. The trunk is straight but at the top all the branches are all around like a whorle so im doing a broom style . The biforcation process is fun . Im getting great ramification. Where i have 3 i cut to 2. And i keep thinking what uve said sometimes less is more and it helps the process. Oh i just bought a osakazuki and 2 others ueno yama and katsura ! Cant wait. My Senkaki didnt airlayer well on my first try, it healed over. I'll try again in the spring. You're maples are beautiful
To some people that need help on growing a good nabari i have seen someone bare root the tree and put a flat piece of wood or better a tile and tie it down to the tree so that the roots will grow horizontally and just bury it . Your root structure will come out better! .

10:40 are you cutting it so high does it have a purpose? I mean the cut of branches look kinda cool but in nature no tree will have it
i would be one to air layer a new root system for the one with bad roots and put it at or above the graft line ...
Hi Peter, what soil do you use out in the big field pots while you're fattening up those trees for several years? Is it just field soil? or do you use peat with some granular additive like pumice?? Thanks as always!
Its usually mud or garden soil plus some bark and leaf mould from our compost heap.

I wish I had your eye.....I wonder at what age do you cut the top off the maples? How thick is the branch when you want to air layer it? Or what thickness should the branch be? I have lots of seedlings too, and I'm not young anymore (in number only) and it seems a good way to get a head start....Thanks, as usual, Peter.
Thank you for your interesting lecture and for your nice language. I can understand every your word and every your step. But it is so pity that I have no any Japanese maple, it's my dream. But I am afraid that I can't grow this tree indoor. In the Urals in winter it is too cold to grow maples in the garden.
If you grow maples in pots and protect them in the winter in a basement or garage - this would work for you.
Have ever considered getting a wireless clip tie microphone? Don't know actual name of that kind of microphone, but you probably know what I mean 😇 sometimes the audio is quite bad.

Question for Peter : what do you think about Ohko stone (dragon stone used for aquarium) and also the dry roots used for aquarium? It is cheap and look good for landscape, roots over rock or tanuki. You said once that most of the time the color of rock are black. What is your point of view on this idea? It is very important for me because I'm about to make decisions. Also I will make an order to herons online shop to prepare spring. Thank you Master 2.0 🙏🏻

If the rock is nice and craggy then use this by all means. Send me some images of these stones and I will advise you better. As for the aquarium wood - most of the ones I have seen are dark brown or almost black and with very little texture - Look at some of the wood on the bonsais with driftwood and use them as examples.

I dont have much experience with Fukien tea as this is a difficult species to grow in Temperate climate like ours. As indoor bonsai they are extremely difficult. So I have given up on them.

Simple cloning techniques will work. You can take cuttings from your existing trees and make endless amounts of new trees. See Peter's video on plant propagation from cuttings. Air layering works too.

Hi Peter, earlier this year during spring I did an air layering of a maple that is in the backyard. After several months the air layering failed to produce any roots. What do you recommend? Try again in different spot or same spot and leave the moss? Thanks!
Try again in another spot. There could be many reasons why it didn't work.

I would like to ask about pumice and lava rock. They are abundant here in ph and cost nothing. Is it good to only use those two for my bonsai mix? I have found fir bark but they are expensive compare to the pumice and lava rock. My main concern is they might not hold enough water and nutrients specially we are a tropical country. I could buy akadama but they are expensive as well. To give you an example here are the pricelist of the few aggregates I have found here in ph.
Pumice is around .40 - 1 dollar per kilo
Lava rock is almost the same
akadama cost around 3.11-5.20 dollars per 500g
The fir bark (repti bark) cost 7.67 dollars in 8.8L
Zeolite is around 1 dollar per 500g
I would like to know your opinion about best substrate to use because like what I said I'm new to bonsai. Thank you!
Pumice is good as a drainage material. We use it in our own bonsai mix. Just try experimenting -its great fun and you will learn from it.

Hardwood cuttings are usually done in the Autumn using pencil thick stems and strong hormone liquid or powder. So do try now.
I just got my rooting hormone yesterday, I have the light I just need to to get the rest of what I need to control the environment today. I hope to have trees to put out in spring if all goes well!! Lololoo I want to start with some oak and go from there..
I watch your video on air layering as well Peter, I can’t wait to try in spring . So can I try and spit the trunk on the oak cutting or will they be two small? I’ve seen a few videos that they do it on lager cuttings
Do you have any idea about the Gardenia? I'm having an issue with one of mine. I think she was cut way to much right before shipment and is slowly dying. I have an indoor grow light and yes I water it but not down it
We don't grow many Tropical trees - as the climate is not suitable but we grow small gardenias for indoor bonsai. Most tropicals except Ficus are tricky indoor bonsai. Not easy to grow.

Peter, just curious: why exactly do you often air layer at branch junctions? Is it just to get a twin trunk or does it somehow aid in success of the air layer?
Apparently there are more auxins at the junction than at a straight portion of a branch- hence it is more efficient in rooting.

hey. i know it's off topic but i have a ficus bonsai in a pot and nothing else pleanted beside it. it's currently just substrate and the lonely ficus. i'd like to cover the surface with something so what can i plant next to it in the pot? (for indoors)
Hi! May I offer my opinion: if it's a beautiful ficus tree, it might be better to keep it in its own pot, add surface moss and maybe a wonderful shape rock for lanscape interest.

@@MrCalbber Yes, it matters to some degree, you wouldn't want sphagnum moss or spongy garden moss for your landscape scene. But there are many types of surface moss, you can even scrape them off shaded pavements or trees in nature etc. Make sure to get all the insects and bugs out of your moss so they don't invade your pot! You could soak them in water for an hour or so and use a brush on the underside to get rid of grit and bugs. Good luck!

Just scrape some moss off your patio or drive and place it on the surface of the pot. That will look nice.

Bali is the closest place to heaven on earth that I’ve ever seen! A little too hot for me but I have never seen so many beautiful flowering trees anywhere else. I was amazed at the beauty of Bali! Don’t take it for granted!
