      Hello, I am glad you found this video helpful! I spend a large part of my day speaking to patients about their progressive lenses. It is always nice to know that someone finds this information useful. Like i said in the video, as long as the doctor has given you the correct prescription and measured you correctly, you will get used to the lenses with time. The brain is amazing in what it is able to adjust to if you just give it some time! I am sure you will get there. If you have any specific question, feel free to post them here and we will get back to you.
      Good luck.

    Great explanation. What I don't understand is 'why' the distortion on the sides...to me, it seems it should be easy to graduate all the way across the lens rather than an extremely narrow range, especially for intermediate vision

    • @eyetalk1485
      @eyetalk1485  6 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      Hello, thank you for watching this video. That is the question of the hour, why is the progressive lens designed the way it is with that hourglass shape and the blur zones on the sides? Well, the blur zones are an unfortunate side effect when you are trying to squeeze all those different corrections into one lens. Using current technology there is no way to create a lens that has perfect clarity throughout the whole lens. The reason for this is a bit hard to explain to someone who does not have an extensive knowledge of optics. But a simplified answer would be that what makes your prescription is the difference between the front and back curvature of the lens, and in a progressive as the prescription changes from the top to the bottom, the curve has to change, and a curve can not go straight across the lens. It has to remain somewhat of a curve, hints the hourglass shape is essentially three circular curves. I hope that this helps.

      @@eyetalk1485 Also, adjusting to your glasses will make a huge difference as well. Once your eyes adjust you won't have that problem anymore. Your brain and eyes are able to do amazing things and adjusting to progressives is just one of them.

    Awesome video! Thanks for taking the time to explain in detail what adjusting to progressive lenses involves. I am 2 weeks into wearing my new pair of progressives and while I must admit I didn't like them at first, and after having the lab remake the lens with a higher progressive placement on the lens, I am now comfortable wearing them and my brain is finally getting adjusted to wearing them. It's as you said in the video, you just have to wear them for at least a week and let your brain get used to them. Thanks again for such an awesome video.

      Hello, oh no! Don’t cry! I hope the video helps, however I cannot stress enough, that if you are not doing better in a week or so, there might be a problem with the progressive lens and you should go back the your eye doctor and have them take a look at it.

    Thanks for the clear (sorry) explanation- I kept seeing other vids fail to explain the blurry lower/outer areas, even though they're represented in their renderings. Just started yesterday and I thought they were just made wrong.

    • @eyetalk1485
      @eyetalk1485  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hello, thank you for watching. The blurry zones are an unfortunate side effect of having the progression of your distance prescription going into your near prescription. However, not all progressives are the same, some are distinctively better than others. Meaning these blur zones are smaller and less noticeable. So, a better quality lens will offer a wider clear area. All lenses will have some distortion though. If the lenses have too large of a blur zone, there may be better options out there for you. Good luck.

      I had the same experience - sales reps were very friendly until I gave them money. Then they politely showed me to the door. No advice, no info, nothing.
      I feel like the mid and near range section of the lenses are far too low in my lenses because I have to tilt my head so far back when I'm standing next to someone and talking to them that they are looking straight up my nose.
      Is there some way to raise up that part of the lense?

    • @soundmanpt
      @soundmanpt 4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      @@4wardnthought234 Yes, but depending on what type of nose pads you have on your glasses. If your glasses re a plastic frame with molded nose pads they can only be raised very slightly. If you have adjustable nose pads their is a lot ,ore to work with and they can be raised up quite a good bit.
      In fact I always suggest that anyone getting progressives on line should try and get a frame with adjustable nose pads for that very reason.

    Kim, as a retired optician myself I have a question for you and your team that has always bothered me. Yes, i have asked this same question where I worked and didn't get the answer I thought I would or should have gotten. As an optician as you know, young people are far more likely to be nearsighted than farsighted, but of course that still allows for a good number of them to be farsighted. in young people this means they have difficulty seeing things close up, but their distance eyesight is almost always perfect and doesn't need any type of prescription. But people when these young people have a job that requires them to wear their glasses at least 8 hours a day or more 5 days a week they soon stop taking their glasses off during their time at work and often even after leaving work. Doing this results in their eyes becoming fully adjusted to their glasses not only for close work but also for seeing distances as well. Soon their once perfect distance vision is gone and they find that they now need their glasses to see distances clearly. So my question is why don't optometrist prescribe patient's, especially younger ones, with progressives so they can wear their glasses as often as they need to or want to without doing any harm to their distance eyesight instead of allowing them to ruin their distance vision by wearing glasses they really didn't need to be wearing? Odds are quite good that at least 2 of you if not all 3 of you wear glasses, but most likely you're all nearsighted considering your all still quite young. My question doesn't really apply to young myopes because they usually don't start wearing their glasses full time until their eyesight is at a point that they no longer are able to see well enough without them. Also it's impossible to have a non prescription add in bifocals or progressives.

    Great video and explanation! One thing that really helped me to get used to the progressives was taking a Dramamine, which is for motion sickness. Be sure to get the one with "Meclzine"...less drowsy. 1 tablet in the morning will really help that initial seasick feeling (if you get it, some people don't). After a day or two, once your eyes and brain adapt, you won't need it.

      @eyetalk1485  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hello, the computer distance is the hardest one to use, the section where the intermediate is located in your progressives is very small, so it can be difficult to hit the right spot. Try, infront of the computer, to either lower or raise your chin to see if the blur clears up, the frame can often be adjusted to account for some of the height. You can also try to adjust the height and distance of your monitor. However, if this doesn’t work, you may want to consider computer only glasses.

    I'm pretty tall so most things are lower than for people shorter than me, so I have them start my transition a little bit lower so I don't have to always put my head down to see clearly. They always fight me a little before they do it because they don't understand how that can be. I hope that helps others tall people. Something to try, but it sure made the difference for me.

      @eyetalk1485  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hello, this is an interesting point that you are making and even trained opticians may have an issue with what you are saying. However, what you are saying makes sense as the progressive lens corrects bases on the distance you are from the object you are trying to see clearly. The positioning and style of progressive lens that you have needs to be tailored to the things that you are wanting to view. This is for example why you cannot wear a progressive lens if you want to lay in bed watching TV, you will be viewing out of the “reading” section of the lens trying to see the TV that is much too far away for this area of the lens... Good points!

      Hello, sorry to hear that you are having a hard time with the progressive lenses. Let me see if I can help, first, are you able to see clearly through the distance section and the reading section? Also do you have a higher distance prescription? Give me the numbers if you have them. If you were wearing glasses before just for distance, did this ever happen before? If your Rx is not that high and you get clarity with the glasses, then I would suspect that it is one of three things; either the material that the lens it made of ( perhaps polycarbonate) and this material does not work for you, or it is made on an inappropriate base curve, the curve may be too high, or the design of the lens is just not going to work for you. Do you know if it is a high end lens or if it was fairly inexpensive?

      Hello, my guess is that the problem is one of three things. Either the alignment of the lens vs your pupils is wrong, or the lens design is now right for you, or there is just something defective with that lens. Is you have been in true progressive all this time, and not something like a blended bifocal, than you have always been in a “hour glass” design. This is just a “side effect” of manufacturing the lens with all your corrections in it. However, all progressives lenses are not the same, maybe the one you got, even though expensive, is not the best design for you. Take it back to the store and have them check your measurements... that is the best place to start. Good luck.

      I suspect they did an old style progressive with no digital technology. At that price you should not have had any issues and feel like you are NOT wearing progressives.

    I have just bought a very expensive new pair of progressive glasses and I cannot read my computer screen unless it’s very high. I feel it’s all wrong.

    • @eyetalk1485
      @eyetalk1485  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hello there, if you are able to see clearly far away and up close, then the prescription is correct. Hard to say if the measurements are correct with out looking. You may need more time to adjust, however, if you just can't find the sweet spot try moving your computer lower and closer. If that doesn't work there is a chance the glasses are too strong. Having to have the computer high doesn't make any sense, unless it is very far from you. Hope this helps.

    I just returned my progressive lenses. They were horrible. The viewing
    fields for the middle and bottom were incredibly short and very
    narrow...not at all as wide as I expected or my line bifocals. I had to
    constantly move my head to read a sentence and keep all the words sharp
    and clear. Pain in the a**. I went back to my line bifocals.

      eye talk thank you I'm getting the transitions soon. I'm excited to get them. What I'm most excited about is the intermediate sights. Thats always been my no mans land with my bifocals.

    • @eyetalk1485
      @eyetalk1485  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      The intermediate distance correction is certainly the progressives claim to fame! Being able to view this distance clearly once presbyopia hits is difficult, your progressive lens will give you some of this distance back! Now, this is the narrowest part in the lens, meaning the usable space is fairly small. One should not expect to be able use this area as one could before one developed presbyopia. Even though progressives is the best technology available, they are not perfect when it comes to the intermediate distance.
      Good luck!

    Kind of like how your nose is always in your field of vision but your brain "tunes" it out because it realizes its not relevant. So you never see it (unless someone like me points that out--now you can't help but see your nose!).

    makes no sense. progressive lenses means 90% of the time everything is blurry because I must look only at the sweet spot to see HD sweet quality. i can't move only my head when looking at things.

    What if i made a mistake on mine. My doctor recommend the progressive lenses because i told him that sometimes i needed to remove my eyeglasses when reading because it would irritate my eyes or the blur of the book or phone.. so he said that he was given 3 points less on the reading part and 3 points more at the top.. not sure what he meant. And i paid $640 for two pairs. Maybe i should of gotten 1 progressive lenses and 1 regular glasses. I am worried! ☹️

    • @eyetalk1485
      @eyetalk1485  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hello, the choice to go to progressive glasses can be a hard one. Whether is is the best choice for you depends on your prescription and how you want to use your glasses. I have never heard an optometrist use the phrase “points” so I am not sure what your doctor meant there, sorry. However I might be able to help if you can show me your prescription and if you do not mind telling me your age, this will show what the best options are. Do you wear your glasses all day now?

    • @eyetalk1485
      @eyetalk1485  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hello, I am not sure if you were myopic or hyperopic to start, but now you are presbyopic. This means that you need more “plus” in your prescription to read, however this additional plus does not work to see distance, so the only way for you to be able to read perfectly and see distance perfectly with the same pair of glasses on is to wear a progressive lens. Most people adapt to progressives, but if you have an issue they should let you switch to single vision lenses instead. Try it out and let us know.

    Just get lined bifocals way way better

    • @OutlawNix
      @OutlawNix 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      For some people using lined bifocals is all most like a sin to them. The idea of having lined bifocals makes them self conscience about what others thinks about them wearing lined bifocals. They feel like lined bifocals makes them look older then they really are.
      I just got my new semi-rimless glasses yesterday which the lenses are lined bifocals and transitions. First time using bifocals and it took me no time at all to get used to them matter of fact took me less then 4 hours.
      I really like my semi-rimless glasses I think they got that sports glasses type of look to them. Another thing is while my lenses do in fact have lined bifocals you can hardly see them at all. When I'm looking at my self in the mirror I really have to look hard to see the bifocal line on the glasses.
