Black colleges and universities are known for their bands playing soul, funk, jazz, R&B, and hip/hop music. This makes a big difference in the atmosphere within the band and crowd as they enjoy being able to dance to their favorites. It's a party atmosphere. The young ladies in white who were dancing, aren't cheerleaders, they're majorettes. Traditional majorettes twirl batons. I used to twirl a baton, ages ago. I started when I was four years old. 🙂 You can get more of an idea of this style of dance, by watching clips of HBCU majorette clips, or clips from the reality show "Bring It!", which is about Dianna Williams of Jackson, Mississippi teaching the style. I don't like that there's profanity used around the students, but they're amazing at what they do. She has (had?) three studios; one in Jackson, one in or near Birmingham, AL and one in or near Atlanta, GA. They're calling The Dancing Dolls. Cheerleaders have pom-poms and perform dance and stunt routines on the sidelines during football and basketball games, during halftime at both. The Dallas Cowboy cheerleaders were really famous for being an NFL football cheerleading team that did perform on the field. I don't follow them, but I think they still perform on the field during halftime, but they shortened the performance. You'd likely get better answers if you look it up. There are also national cheerleading competitions. You can see footage on TH-cam.
Just to add to your explanation (and confusion to some) some schools have pom pom squads that are separate from the cheerleading squad- mainly in high schools
Glad you got to see this video. The performer was heard in the stadium, but the camera is mostly picking up the band. Definitely should do more JSU Sonic Boom videos
I love when people watch HBCUs for the first time because it’s a big part of our culture that gets over looked. HBCUs are mainly found in the south and some (most) might say that Southern University has the best band
I wish people could see how big this band is during our city parades… especially as a little girl when I say from my recollection it probably was like 500 members at any given moment
So glad you guys finally got a chance to see JSU - THEE I LOVE! I did recommend it and so glad you got a chance to see the Sonic Boom! 😊❤ That is our style to truly feel the music and move the crowd! The ladies I white are not necessarily cheerleaders but performers in the band. They're apart of a group that starts at a young age in interpretation dance.
Yes! This is a HBCU thing where there is a lot of dancing, fun and excitement. So if you want more bands to watch then I recommend North Carolina A&T….Florida A&M….Texas Prairie View…and those are just a few of course there are a lot more because it’s HBCU…98% of them are all good including the high school bands too. 😊😊😊😊😊
HBCUs marching style is called high stepping/show style, PWIs like Ohio State marching style is called Corp style. HBCUS play to entertain. Here is a list of HBCUs to check out: Southern, NC A&T, FAMU, Alcorn, Bethune Cookman, Texas Southern. There are more but thats a good start.
HBCUs are mostly in the southern states. Alabama State University, Southern University of Louisiana, Alcorn State University of Mississippi , North Carolina A&T, Prairie View of Texas, and many more. Some states have multiple HBCUs.
Alabama State-Mighty Marching Hornets Southern University- Human Jukebox Norfolk State- Spartan Legion Howard University- Showtime Band Texas Southern University- Ocean of Soul Alcorn State University- Sounds of Dynamite
HBCU's are going to be a stark contrast to "White" universities and colleges. Where they are usually more regimented, like their military origins and counterparts, HBCU's are usually more soulful and representing the black persons experience. Where THE Ohio State University is considered the best and the Gold Standard, Jackson State is their counterpart in the HBCU's and considered the best of that world... -I'm also going to help you out, since I'm sure a lot of these songs you probably either A) won't know because of being from the UK, B) not growing up in the late 80's and 90's and C) I'm just going to assume you probably;y didn't listen to black urban music, I'll link the songs below so you at least get an idea of what they sound like.... th-cam.com/video/9XqKRipnNSk/w-d-xo.html I Want Her/Keith Sweat th-cam.com/video/3Gt0bq58in0/w-d-xo.html Breakin' My Heart (Pretty Brown Eyes) th-cam.com/video/Z1l5PFs2eTc/w-d-xo.html Ain't my type of hype/Full Force (I was going to link the official video, but it may be too sexy for ya'll 😂 So here is the clip it was for in the movie "House Party") th-cam.com/video/9saEpqhBP5M/w-d-xo.html Crime Mob - Knuck If You Buck (Video)
As far as college bands, probably the most beautiful and technical show ever done, was done by Ohio State's arch rival, the University of Michigan. The show was done in the DARK, with lights on their hats, and a LASER SHOW as well. It was a tribute to the police and fireman first responders to 9/11. Absolutely amazing show, done in front of over 110,000 people, I believe it's the 3rd largest stadium in the world. th-cam.com/video/sMF33UdjcMk/w-d-xo.html
"THEE, SONIC BOOM OF THE SOUTH! OFTEN IMITATED, BUT NEVER DUPLICATED"!😀👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽

They are not majorettes either. They are the dance team for the marching band.
I love our HBCU bands. We have fun, we entertain, and still have that technical acumen with precision and sound.
They're fantastic to watch 😃
Glad you got to see this video. The performer was heard in the stadium, but the camera is mostly picking up the band. Definitely should do more JSU Sonic Boom videos
Yall should definitely look at more recent videos of THEE Sonic Boom. For example their parades and halftime shows 🫶🏾
Will do, any videos you would recommend? :)
5:25 that's a good insight. For marching bands there's a concept of Show style versus Corp style
7:13 “Pretty Brown Eyes” by Mint Condition was beautifully done!
