  • So stoked to get the first truck camper build video out! Even though this was just a template to get the general design in order, it felt like a HUGE step in the right direction for me. Stay tuned for future videos when I explain why I am going with a non-cabover style camper, the interior layout, and build progress. If you just can't wait and want exclusive updates, I am sharing those to patreon, check that out below:

why not bring it over the cab for profile aesthetics and reduction of the wind resistance? might not add anything other than storage but imo it will look better than a box.

    • @TheCgilbert9935

That would bring more living space. Even possible a bath room. You wouldnt be able to take the jeep top off. Even though he possible will never take off. I would have chosen over the cab

Wow Phil this is going to be amazing! Seems that the most valuable thing about your lifestyle is the great contacts you have made. I would make it a cabover because right now you are traveling alone but you never know when you are going to meet a lady friend who wants to tag along. With a cabover one person can take a nap while the other person cooks, washes dishes, stretches out on the couch, etc. Of course you sacrifice the rack space but I wonder if the rack could sit on top of the camper.

awesome mane:) when you design the overhead roof rack, you could design it to overhang the windshield a foot or so, that way it's long enough to get kayaks up there w/o hitting the camper box (kinda like a work/ladder rack on a truck)... might make a little wind noise but would be sweet to have a bunch of room up there if you need it or want kayaks up there. Gonna do that next after i finish my flatbed build and get rid of the yakima rack.

Hey Phil! Love your content! Question for you.... Why if you have the space for a cab-over, that you decided not to go with one? Noticing what you are doing with the area on the roof forward of the camper, I observe that you could have copious amounts of space if you were to go with the cab-over and a roof rack on top of that space would more than support a kayak and such.... Are you also installing solar?

One thing I would never do with this new camper shell installed is try any jumps, your frame is much less desirable than the new Mojave frame, they can and do bend. The Mojave has wrapped steel welded in all the stress areas.

    • @Down2Mob
      @Down2Mob  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

@@davidcox2197 I had no idea the mojave frame was different - that changes all of my opinions about that truck! wow. It came out after I bought my Rubicon. and as I do see your point, we are building gussets for the rear shock mounts and reinforcing the frame, and its all a matter of how much weight will truly be on that rear axle when its all said and done. But I mean, jumps are never really a GOOD idea, just a FUN idea hahahah

    • @davidcox2197

The solar that has panels stacked 3 to a sandwich, but when u park u open the right & left & bottom panel stays in center on top. The Snossberry all color matched & is best color out NOW. The V8 hood & exhaust & paddle shifters r bad ass but only offered of V8 right NOW. Hving a 48 volt alternator under the hood is key to going off grid, even if genesis dual 12 volt lithium under the hood. I hve seen nice back door storage set up & under bumper front & rear set up best of all.

I Am going to hve double door jam on newer jeeps, so it will hve solid bars doors inner door jam & larger new doors outer door jam, mirrors not attached. The roof needs to b taller on next jeeps as well. Front windshield needs to tilt out like side by side. The lite bar & rack will b smooth fitting unseen w/top of roof unless u pull/pop them out as needed so less drag & less wind noise. Roof & top of window higher so tall ppl 6ft 4" ish can see. front windshield is pretty freaking up right aero drag big. The V8 hood is cool but heavy ass hell, aluminum front & rear fenders for sure hopefully V8 hood option too.

basically if not going front independant jumping better set up then u want your LOW push bumper to hit & take hit b4 the bump stop or axle takes the hit. Long sq bars vs axle takes bulk of the hit. Oh yeah truss or more beef b4 or after your axle KO is a good idea, & ucan't go wrong w/60 or even 70 axle esp if jumping.

Have followed your page for a while. The dodge mahal was amazing for a # of reasons. I think you are taking a major step back in terms of usability. The COG on this camper is way too far back, combine that with an already low payload. Unfortunately I just don’t see this working properly, especially for living in. Another factor to consider is fuel mileage, you will be having to plan trips around gas stations because it will be such a pig on fuel. My 2 cents anyways...

  • @BladeRunner.43

if u don't hve a front LOW brush bar axle protector then u break axle hitting rock on trail, but if jumping it won't matter. If rocking normal speed then u need way to lift LOW push bumper up or off.

Great idea, but beware of bending the frames issue. Have seen bent gladiator frames towing a teardrop. The Chevy Colorado pickup owners manual explicitly says you can NOT put a slide-in pickup camper or similar equipment in the bed the of the truck. It voids your warranty and there have been some bent frames, from pickup campers and from towing, that chevy didn't warranty. That is crazy. As long as you are under the max payload, the bed should handle whatever you throw at it, so why call out slide-in campers are not allowed? The jeep gladiator manual is slightly different and, on page 14, states "This vehicle is NOT recommended for slide-in camper applications." So not as strict as the Colorado owners manual. Still worth taking into consideration as the jeep bent frame may have had to do with suspension mods. Will be hard to stay under max payload with this camper, your full time supplies, etc. Looking forward to the build and how all that is taken into consideration. Keep all your heavy stuff (water, batteries, propane) at the very front of the camper.

The Coyotes remind me of the movie Will Smith, I am legend when he was in the bath tub and all the zombies were outside his house!!!!

Great content! Drop the flashlights and battery powered electric blankets IMO.
