GREAT video Pete! I love the bonus tip! 👍 Very useful for group shots and excellent explanation of this. Your channel continues to ROCK all things photography and I can't want to w/b here and wish you congratulations on 100K, which, mark my words, I'll be doing very soon!
Usually ya click on these types of videos and they aren’t bad just very basic, but your tips in this video were, um…eye-opening! Seriously, thank you!!!
I have always had a button mapped to turn eye detect on and off, but never considered mapping a button to select which eye. Cool idea! I haven't done any portrait shooting in quite a while. Now I have to do some and give this a try. Have a great weekend Pete!!
Good Stuff! I loved the intro, and you made it look like you are having fun while you’re at work. I think I learn a lot just watching your videos as stories….. and I have to finish later, after the game. Keep ‘em coming, Al
I've been using that face detect on and off switch for a while now but my brain blew up with the eye selection switch. I got so upset on my last shoot because 90% of the shots I took got the wrong eye! but now I know better. Thank you Pete Coco!
I have my Fn button set for IS control, my AFON button for back-button focus BBF (I use the dial to magnify for manual focus), AE-L for face detection on/off, and my Fn3 D-pad button to L/R. I did it this way, because I need that BBF button and the dial for manual focus magnify.
Sigh.....you know despite indicating that I want the closest eye in focus (whether right or left depending on the situation) my xt5 tends to focus on the wrong eye even when the focus confirmation box is placed on the correct one (with Fujinon lenses). It happens nearly 50% of the time....I am seriously tired of getting so many false positives with the camera that I might just call it quits with fuji if the summer firmware update doesn't fix things. Oh yeah an this is for stills! on video is not even worth mentioning.
Grabs X-H2 and sets this immediately. OK so I always had face detect on/off set, but hopefully the L/R eye switch setting will stop the AF mucking about like it can do when it can't quite work out which eye is closest to camera. Looking forward to more tips as new Fujifilm user. 👍
Great video Pete. I use this technique too. I also use the button on the front of my x100v to turn the flash on and off. That's pretty much everything you need.
This is a great hack, thank you. I am thinking on switching to Nikon though. I bought an H2, and it was a lemon. It took Fuji nearly a year to finally swap it out for another body. I emailed many times, but no one even responded. I complained to the Fujifilm repair in NYC, and at least the manager there spoke to me, but even he wouldn't give me an email to escalate the issue to. It was crazy. I was so frustrated. Also, I still have autofocus issues, but then again Nikon might not be better in that regard. I think that the H2, though improved over the XT-4's autofocus, it still has a pretty low hit rate for me. Weirdly, while photographing an event last Friday, for example, I had it on single af, not using face detection or anything, and the focus box was squarely over my subject's head, and the camera focused way behind the subject. This happened in a number of pictures with various subjects. I don't know how it did that. Anyways, sorry for the rant, lol.
No worries, I get it haha. I'm sorry you had this experience. Fuji needs to get it together with AF, because at this point it's just getting sad. My XT5 doesn't have these weird AF problems, other than not being nearly as good as my Canon, but I understand how frustrated many people are.
@@PeteCocoPhoto Yeah, it's a shame really. Also, when I had that happen with my H2, I really felt that they don't care. I have been shooting Fuji since the XT-1. I know I am only one customer, but I've been investing in their gear for a very long time. That's that thing, if they had actually responded it would be a different issue. I don't know if Nikon or Canon is better in that regard, but there are other, large, companies that will respond to people's issues. Sorry, I'm off-subject here. I remember the XT-1 and not long after the firmware update they put out to improve the autofocus, and that was okay. It wasn't perfect, but shooting mainly portraits, I didn't have to many problems. This new H2, has been really bad for me. Also, my XT-4, at least when trying face detect, it's not trustworthy in that mode, but when not using face detect, I get better results than with the H2, which is surprising. It's like they keep tweaking it, and it keeps getting messed up.
Nice run through. I have been assigning a button to toggle face detect since the cameras first allowed it but there are some subtle variations between models. The X-T5 doesn't turn off face detect on power off, unlike my previous T3/T30 bodies and it catches me out time and again. Either i hit the button and it unintentionally disables it, or i start shooting non-portrait subjects and it picks on "false faces". The only quibble I have with a camera that otherwise handles beautifully intuitively.
@@PeteCocoPhoto it's particularly irksome if you pair up differently bodies as I like to do, looking at a T50 to add to the T5 and expecting a learning period to get used to the little differences. Still, on balance this is a great way to go for a non-pro shooter with all prime lenses. I always carry one or other body, giving me the choice of the more compact one if I want to travel really light, or can take both when on a proper "photography day". In film days I used a Contax RTS 2 plus an M6 in the exact same way. Hated the weight and handling clunk of full frame DSLRs after that but then switched to Fuji X and haven't looked back since
Awesome tips! I really like the ability to map the custom buttons to whatever I want. Do you know if any other camera makers provide as much button customization as Fujifilm?
I also have z8 and Z9 and they are well customizable. In nikon the af is very simplified you just move the joystick to switvh eyes. Also you can assign an af pattern to a button without eye/subject detect and another with those features to another button completely eliminating the guess work. They also have 3D af pattern that picks just what you point it at in a crowd.
This is a great tip and I agree I could've definitely used this the other day when I was doing that shoot that I was telling you about and I was able to navigate my way through it but something like this would've been really handy on my GFX camera, I wish that I could have a similar set up, but I will probably have another play with the GFX this afternoon because I definitely would like to be able to do the same on that camera and the GFX cameras auto focus is a little sluggish. It actually still works okay especially when the light is okay... thank you for the very insightful video
@@PeteCocoPhoto I'm just having a play this afternoon with the XT5, so I will let you know if I can do that. It is actually useful because sometimes the model or person your photographing might be slightly angled to the left or right in fact, I often shoot people not straight on, I know that's not traditional, but sometimes it can be really cool just to offset somebody slightly
I watched some videos about fujifil autofucs...but they said that the boxes are fake...because after checking the photos the eyes out of focus ...especially when hand come closer to face.... can you confirm this ??? thanks
It's too bad Fuji butchered their eye AF with their firmware upgrades in the newest gen cameras. I was so close to buying an X-H2 until I found out about this.
You want to use AF-C for moving subjects plus make sure shutter speed is above 1/500 sec; I also like to stop down a bit to make sure they are both in focus so like f/5.6 or so
i got a problem with the last tip... on my X-H2 there is Wide/Tracking - which gives me a pretty small box - which has to be above a face to even get into Eye AF. So in order to switch faces, i need to position that little square right above the face. Once locked it says with that face, which brings back old DSLR "focus - recompose" vibes... Haven't found a way to just use wide without that tracking box...
Yes, this is just the way tracking works on Fuji. Try the same method in WIDE instead. I will do this sometimes as well. Hopefully Fuji will make further tweaks to the AF interface.
@@PeteCocoPhoto for AF-ON i mapped subject recognition animal on/off. i wanted to try back button focusing but using it when not using the EVF is tough. i mean i don't find it useful when i am not looking from EVF.
I personally used the XT 5 for six months, continuing to have problems with the AF, unpredictable and inaccurate. I have tried all possible configurations and made updates without having clear improvements. I professionally photograph both landscape and animals. personally Fuji NEVER AGAIN

Sadly Left/Right Eye Switch doesn't exist on my X-T4. I'm on the latest firmware 2.1. Seems like a X-T5 feature only 😢
It's such a handy feature hopefully they will add it to the 4
