    It's funny. I played horn in high school, about 40 years ago and stopped. About 8 years ago I took up the flute. Lately I've been having articulation problems on the flute. No matter what I tried I wasn't able to get a clean attack.. About 6 weeks ago I took up horn playing again. The flute/tonguing problems went away as soon as I took up the horn again. It's good to be back.

    on the topic of horn angle i always used the idea of placing the horn in one spot where it puts the least amount of pressure on your chops and i find that that gives a more powerful sound in every register because your chops vibrate more freely and you dont get the red ring on your chops after you play for extended lengths of time

    I had the chance to meet P. Farkas many years ago in H.S (Texas) and asked him a pile of questions, one in particular I asked was,
    "Why do you not cover Horn off the leg in your book?" he said,
    "When I wrote the book I just didn't think of it!" It's a great response From W.V Farkas told me the exact same thing. "Use a hand position that covers every use."

    I would counter that many people can play down to about 10-20% breath capacity seamlessly. _33%_ seems arbitrary and as an example our principal horn can play a passage that leaves him breathless yet sounds wonderful right to the end.

    How long does it take to develope a good embouchure on French Horn? I’m going into my senior year of high school and play bass but want to switch to French horn and play in a professional orchestra after college since I’m deeply passionate about the horn. Do you think this goal this late is practical or would that be too late to start developing these face muscles? I also played trumpet in middle school for 3 years but I don’t know how much that would help. Please help, thanks!!

    • @samanthaslockbower7645

      I know a professional horn player who didn’t start playing till college and I went to school with another horn player who started late in high school. It’s definitely not too late to switch if you haven’t already, especially since you have experience playing a brass instrument already.

    Wht not breath in through the nose? Sucking a blast of air through the mouth corners is neither natural OR efficient.
    And , yes, one can sound just as good full of air as low of air. The embouchure only knows air pressure. Effort is not necessarily "tension ".
    The resonance is in the instrument, not the oral space.

    Here's my questions about the horn and hand position that I really haven't gotten a true answer as to why, other than tuning ( I played the horn in a US Army Military Band ) #6. Hand position ! ? Why is it necessary to place the hand IN the bell of the horn? Shouldn't the Horn be responsible for the sound, like most other brass instruments, and as, in some ways, the person in this video suggests, in # 3 ! Placing the hand IN the bell - wouldn't it effect or muffle the beautiful sound the horn gives ? Also, why can't tuning be performed with another object, IF even necessary to do so ! ? Is it just that the hand and the shape of the horn allows the hand to be most effective?

    • @hornguru
      @hornguru 5 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Hi Michael - you pose very good questions. Yes, one should be able to produce a good sound even without the hand in the bell. The primary use of the hand is for intonation and holding the horn. In fact, the reason why I list it as a potential problem is that many players do cover up a perfectly good sound with a hand position that distorts the open sound. With correct placement the sound remains open and allows for subtle movements that will help manipulate intonation. I believe that the hand affords the easiest means of adjusting to the minute variables needed to play in tune and another object would be just one more step of involvement that is again, unnecessary and less efficient. We are asked to do a variety of extended techniques in addition to simply playing. These involve stopped horn, echo horn, on the leg, off the leg, bells up and more. The ergonomics and shape of the horn perfectly allow the hand to easily be inserted in the bell, thus making it the most effective and efficient solution. Because of this I believe that the hand is necessary in the bell as the most practical and successful means of accomplishing the gamut of our requirements. Thanks agin for your question.

    • @michaelbest7872
      @michaelbest7872 5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Will, thank you for your admittance, and reasons. I played the trumpet for many years. I then moved to the horn because I simply fell in love with the sound it shares. At that time playing it, I listened to the horn I played, both with my hand In, and out. While hand placement for what a composer wants to hear, I hear that the overall sound the horn gives, is lessened by the hand IN. Let that non playing hand relax. Or play the horn with your hand before the valves, or not at all, and away from the bell, and you should hear the sound I hear, which is pure. Forgive me. I just hear sound very differently.
