    Meades is brilliant. His equally good documentaries on Joe building (Soviet architecture) and on Italian Fascist architecture, which are here on TH-cam, should also be watched. They are brilliantly perceptive, hugely erudite and very very funny. He's a treasure, dare I say it.

    Am quite sure that he wouldn't thank me for saying it but for the past 25 years I've found Jonathan Meades to be the most provocative, funny and informed documentary maker on television. Also, the camera work is an object lesson in composition. It only saddens me that just two thousand hits have been made for this broadcast.

      Since then, they faked the moon landings then knocked down their own twin towers of economic warfare followed by not only killing all life on the planet but any possibility of future life on the planet for 100,000 years or more. Fukushima is an extinction level event. Nazis never even used chemical weapons and are now nuke free. They planned for 1000 years into the future. British and their grotesque american stepchildren

    Looking at these comments, I must add that any criticism of some of his points is not Nazism. The essence of Nazism is that there is no free exchange of ideas. No private ideas, no private person. Therefore, his essay should be discussed. as a free society does. Much of what he says, I agree with, but not all.

    I like Meades "snarkiness", even though his opinions irritate me quite often. I think though, he is able to create thoroughly interesting, charming and thought provoking documentaries, partly despite and partly because of this . There is much to quibble over in various aspects of his analysis, not least for me, his obviously materialist view of the world, but I'm always drawn to see his films to the end. He does say somewhere near the beginning of this piece that all ideologies and religions are inherently divisive and for that I give him due credit.

    At one point Meades, by way of analogy, utters the phrase 'Imagine a United States of America where EVERYONE is a member of the Ku Klux Klan'... In 2021, what once was barely imaginable now takes barely any imagination at all.

    The Nazis did not invent Neoclassical architecture, though they did overapply in the extreme. However, one should not judge an entire style by a handful of its practitioners. The Neoclassical style is more often than not a perfect embodiment of beauty, style and function - which is why it's present in all corners of the world.

Wish he'd make more programmes, but sadly commissioners aren't interested in making intelligent television anymore.

    • @Reddebrek46
      @Reddebrek46  8 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      +Kevin ecape1820 Not really, building programs occurred in most nations during the same period, like the Empire State Building. Most third world nations today have thriving construction industries. It would have been more impressive if the Nazi's had raised living standards and built a stable economy not dominated by the military and the need to expand or collapse. But alas.

    • @wolverineeagle
      @wolverineeagle 8 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      +Kevin ecape1820 It’s called deficit spending. The Nazis used similar policies to what FDR used in the US. Massive government expenditure, higher taxation of the rich, a multitude of government programs, and lastly, government control of the economy. The Nazis controlled everything in Germany.

    • @Reddebrek46
      @Reddebrek46  8 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      +Sarah Lunafire Ohh, I hope English is your second language because not one fragment of this comment makes any sense. Post WWII german reconstruction in both East and West was facilitated thanks to massive spending by the occupation authorities, and the civil rebuilding under the Nazi's was heavily tied to the re-militarization drive which is why it focused on heavy industry and road construction. Often using slave labour.

    No, old values are not just to be mocked. That's wrong--what is the issue is the very accurate point that in the Nazi world is that no one is allowed to have a different idea. All have to say the same thing. That's what matters. Oh and also wrong about the Nazi salute--it is of Roman origin.

    • @forthrightgambitia1032
      @forthrightgambitia1032 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      There is actually no evidence that the Romans ever did that salute, it was a 19th century myth started by French neoclassical painters during the French revolution. It was from this myth, not Crowley that the salute emerged among Freikorp groups in the 20s. Although Crowley's mystical rituals often included a form of this salute and had a brief correspondence with Hitler, so it is easy to see why Meades (and Fleming from whom he is obviously pulling this mistake) drew the link.

    This man should never be allowed to work in TV again. All this "documentary" boils down to is a simple snarky and oppinionated rant about the Third Reich with a few facts streached beyond the boundry of tolerance with the rest being the presenter's own bias. Really when I heard my girlfriend watching this in the backgroun I though this was some upstart TH-cam millenial talking about things he dosent understand, I am appauled that this has the odacity to call itself a "documentary" skip this and go play Wolfenstein, its the same thing but at least Wolfenstein dosen't take itself seriously.
