Thanks for the video, I'm thinking about running it for the first time, does the weather stay cold despite the sun? What average temperature did you have during the race?
It depends on the year. But most of the time it's in the 30s when you start and warms up maybe 50s-60s. I think a couple times it's got into the 70s. But, that time of year is mostly pretty cold for Houston.
Here's a video I made a few years ago about that subject. Gels and premade stuff are expensive. I'm really cheap. The 50lb bag of malto can go in the freezer and last for like 5 years. th-cam.com/video/xfinLIu7bjI/w-d-xo.html It is a little outdated in that I don't use any flavoring anymore and you don't really have to boil it. Just shake it up real good and stick it in the fridge overnight and all the clumps will dissolve. Be careful though, it'll ferment really fast if it's hot. I should update the video! Good idea. Water and salt tabs are a little more subjective. It depends mostly on the weather. In the winter when it's like 50F and below, I usually just grab a water at every aid station and maybe take a salt tab at the half way point. When it's up around 80 or 90F+, it's hard to get enough water down to keep up. You mostly just have to practice and see what works for you. My water strategy works for me, but makes my wife barf. You just kinda have to experiment and see what works for you.
They are pretty good. They're spread out so you can get what you want and there's a clear distinction between GatorAid and Water. The volunteers are great.
It says on their website somewhere the pace you have to maintain to not let the flamingos catch you. But I think that's as if you are the last person out of the gate. If you start earlier, you'd have more time before they catch you. But I've had a couple buddies that have been caught and they've given me different reports. One made them get in the bus and one they just made move to the sidewalk and let finish. I suppose it would depend on how far you've made it and how fast you're moving. Not sure really. But I'd say go for it. If nothing else, you can say you've tried and you never know. You might do much better than you thought you would!
@motivatedbymedals thank you so they have sweepers like RunDisney races have the balloon 🎈 ladies. Nice to know that. I will be running Rock N Roll San Antonio for they have a 7 hour cut off and will be my first full marathon
For sure, it was my first marathon, and I enjoyed every minute of it. Explored more of Houston in those 5 hours than in the last 5 years.@@motivatedbymedals
Nice video! I will be running my first Houston half marathon in October, the ultimate goal is to complete the Houston Marathon. :)
Nice! Good luck. They're both fun races. I'm sure you'll have a blast! Let us know how it goes.
Awesome job!
Thank you! It was fun.

I haven't been able to see all your videos, but do you discuss your nutrition strategy for the marathon distance. Gel preference, water, etc.? Thanks

@@motivatedbymedals thanks for the reply. I’ll check it out.
Thank you for sharing. I plan on making Houston my Texas Marathon. The crowd support looked decent. How were the aid stations?

19:01 that’s what she said.
Yea it is.
Do they have hard sweeps? I am afraid that if I run a 16 minute per mile pace i would be swept.

Got stuck in corral D :/
Oh, man, that's a bummer. Makes for a late start. Hopefully it was still fun!

Sorry I was so oblivious.
Do Better.
The free H-E-B breakfast was a disappointment. Thank you H-E-B for the free bananas and Chocolate milks. My advise, skip the H-E-B breakfast.
It was a little lackluster. Kind of powdered eggs and rubbery pancakes.
No don’t skip it. Get your plate then give it to a homeless on the way out.
