    The preempt command was left off of R2, which is why you weren't seeing HSRP failover to R2 when S1/0 was brought down on R1. The rest of the lab is great. Thanks for the video.

    • @ahmadfaridzafari61
      @ahmadfaridzafari61 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      yes you are correct. preempt must be on on R2. because Preempt is used to identify who is who.

    Hello Dan, I've noticed that you have a mistake in configuration on from R1, you typed standby track G0/1 wich will by default set HSRP group 0 for that particular command. The correct way is to specify the group for that command and optional the decrement value

    • @davidkrause6861
      @davidkrause6861 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @Stancu Mihai You are correct. My running-config shows "standby 0 track GigabitEthernet0/0" which is incorrect. It should actually read "standby 1 track GigabitEthernet0/0".

    Hi danscourses , thanks for all the vids. I an safely say that you have helped me get through CCNA1 - 4 and deff helped me with Netriders, i came 5th in Sub Sahara Africa this year. :) I have a question though. How would you go about configuring HSRP on 2 L3 switches with multiple VLANS? I also have DHCP pools that are population each VLAN.Regards Mike

    So we don't need preempt and track command on R2?

  • @martinlarrosa08
    @martinlarrosa08 9 ปีที่แล้ว +3

    At 14:21min you can see that the tracking id is different from the rest. The tracking id is 0 instead of 1, is that correct? Would that be the reason why the standby router did not show the status change messege?

    • @cy_wareye7395
      @cy_wareye7395 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      Martin Larrosa Hmm. I think more correct is command: r(config-if)# standby 1 track gigabitEthernet 0/1 . Becose we can put group number too on track command. Dont sure thet needs. As we can see all works properly...

  • @grasshoppernz
    @grasshoppernz 9 ปีที่แล้ว

    Hey mate, thanks for all the videos they are really helpful! just wanted to ask a question about the config you have here, shouldn't the "standby X preempt" command be on all the routers standby interfaces so when the priority changes from a lost link the other routers with a higher priority can go into a active state?

    • @amscisawic2801
      @amscisawic2801 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      David Smith You are right. Unless configured to preempt, a standby router will become active only when the standby holdtime expires (10 sec by default), meaning no Hellos at 224.0.0.2:1985 (UDP) for 10 sec.

  • @bayareamountainbiker
    @bayareamountainbiker 8 ปีที่แล้ว

    hi dan! my only question on the hsrp is how to configure dhcp on it? do you create the dhcp on the hsrp routers or do you create it on the edge router and configure ip-helper on the hsrp routers? i saw a vid that showed how dhcp is setup on the hrsp routers however, i couldn't find the command ip dhcp-server in the packet tracer. i only use packet tracer and I'm studying for ccna. appreciate your advise.

    • @RyanBeney
      @RyanBeney 8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hey Ryan, you can achieve these multiple ways - You could have DHCP pool setup on both routers i.e. /24 and when a PC broadcast out its Discover to find a DHCP server both routers will respond with an offer but the PC will only pick the first one it received.
      If there are two DHCP servers, why are there no conflicts? - Before an IP is given from any pool DHCP checks to see if that IP is being used on the network and hopefully if any of the DHCP pools on any router has given an IP to the PC/Host the other should detect the IP is being used on the network and not give it out. But it’s possible when DHCP checks the PC/Host doesn’t respond and as such duplicate IPs may appear on the network causing problems for users.
      A safer option (Depending on design) could be to split your pool across two devices i.e. 2x /25 on each router, rather than both being configured with the same /24, but if a router were to fail your available dynamic IPs will reduce, so you need to ensure your entire estate can be handled by a single router in an event of a failure
      A better option would be to utilise DHCP-Relay (IP-Helper Address) on both routers so the messages are sent to a remote server off the local network to be centrally handled. This would also mean, any router receiving the request could handle a response and since DHCP is only being handed out by a central device there are no conflicts
      Hope this helps

    hi!
    my question is that during the HSRP do the packets are shared on bpth routes like OSPF do load balancing or it just uses a single route until the router goes down ?

    • @dominiquebastien2487
      @dominiquebastien2487 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      No load balancing with HSRP. You need to use GLBP to load balance. But if you have multiple VLANs (IP subnet) you can distribute them on the two routers.

    the standby group configuration on R1 was wrong at the track line parameter, it was configured as group 0 instead of 1, that`s why the R2 was not in active mode, whats weird is how could you ping outside! :/

    • @amscisawic2801
      @amscisawic2801 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      d0tnix The reason the ping was successful is because it actually went PC-A -> R1 -> R2 ->. Initial frame had D MAC = 0000.0C9F.F001 (0000.0C - Cisco ID, 9FF - HSRPv2 ID, 001 - group #), so according to S1's CAM table, the frame went to the HSRP Active router first (R1). R1 knows about the 209.165.200.14 host from OSPF adjacency on its g0/0, so the next frame has D MAC = R2's g0/0.

    Something is wrong with this Lab. It does not work as expected.
    You are not going through router 2 when you said "Its obviously going through R2"
    Instead the PC is going 192.168.1.1 -> back down the LAN with R1 OSPF route to R2
    Try disabling the OSPF on R1 and try pinging again, NO GO
    There is something wrong with the TRACK COMMAND in packet tracer. When i disconnect G0/1 nothing happens and R1 still thinks he is the Active router.

    • @srinivasagopalkakarla8228
      @srinivasagopalkakarla8228 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      While configuring standby priority on routers make sure difference is only 5, means on R1 if priority is 95 then on Active Router R2 it should be 100 because "standby track interface" command will decrease the priority of Router by 10 when interface goes down. If you configure priority values as R1(95) & R2(120) it wont work when track configured interface goes down. because 120 - 10 = 110 still has R2 has higher priority then R1.

    Your "TRACKING" of G0/1 DID NOT WORK...
    Because you forgot to input the number of the standby group in your command.
    Upon your SHOW RUN we can plainly see that your omittance…
    Resulted in a "Standby 0" statement...
    And so would NOT affect the Standby 1 group.
