You guys are right to say there's never been a truly dominant champ. Because of Khabib's early retirement we never found out how he would do against people like Charles, Islam, Gamrot, Dariush and Tsarukyan all of whom posed challenges he'd never had to face throughout his career. Hell, most of the reason so many people wanted him to fight Ferguson was because of how miserable Tony was at making people from his guard. His main win with a particular grappling pedigree was RDA who he beat purely through laying on him. You're also right to point out that Khabib and Islam are different fighters and that Islam really does have a more complete skillset than Khabib. Christ knows how Khabib would have dealt with Volk. With all that being said, Khabib is still no.1 in my eyes. If Charles does beat Islam in their rematch then his name is back in contention though.
LMAOOOOOO beat RDA by laying on him? You need to stop being so salty. No one says that about his fight against RDA. RDA got ragdolled and battered that fight like he was khabibs little brother
@@SM-fk5or exactly, and not to forget RDA was in his prime and on a 5 winning streak and after losing to Khabib, his winning streak resumed, Khabib got injured and RDA in his absence got on to become a champion 💀
@@SM-fk5or I literally watched the fight last week. Round 1 Khabibs offense is entirely grappling. All significant strikes are landed by RDA. Under old scoring criteria Khabib wins. Round 2 Khabib controls RDA the whole round. Lands occasional GNP, easily thwarts all of RDAs attempts to get up. Round 3 same as round 3. The reason you never hear this from people is because the vast majority haven't watched the fight. Some because they never watch old fights, butanu because the fight is very boring. Khabib won. No question. But RDA left the fight looking annoyed and disappointed in himself. He did not look like a man who'd been smashed and ragdolled. Go watch it now and tell me I'm wrong.
I feel like the first thing to do in a GOAT conversation is to define what do you count when evaluating the GOAT status. If you're talking about who was the best at that weight ever, that will leave you with some very uncomfortable picks in some other classes. But I understand it playing a factor. The question is how much of a factor. I'm not convinced that ending a win-streak is something that impressive, you'd have to have some very good statistical analysis to back that up. Oliveira unquestionably is a legend of LW and I wouldn't frown at his indoctrination into a hall of fame right now. Other statements require lots of analysis and arguing.
Interesting debate for sure a lot of great points made. I wonder if Charles might be considered the “most prolific” LW with Khabib being the GOAT. It’s how I feel atleast about Ali being the GOAT but Lennox being most prolific. A modern fighter more shrewd about his progression in an era a long life beyond boxing was more than feasible and could be done comfortably with todays prize money. Alex’s point about absorbing the aura of each contender a dominant champion knocks off never passing it on in defeat kinda blew my mind. Immediately thought of Mike Tyson and how true that is. Ppl call him overrated forgetting he literally retired an undefeated Spinks, outboxed one of the more refined heavyweights in Pinklon, and was the ONLY man in 75 attempts to knock Larry Holmes spark out despite the likes of Ali, Kenny Norton, and Shavers having a go. All bc Buster had literally the fight of his life & Tyson’s career was forever altered following Cus’ passing. Which is what made me think of this example in the first place bc now I wonder: Will Islam’s career have a pre-coach khabib vs a post-khabib arc? Tysons fall was slow as Rooney stayed for a few fights but by Buster, his peek-a-boo was nearly non-existent. I don’t think it would be quite as dramatic of course but are we saying having khabib as a coach isn’t helpful? If it’s true he’s stepped back, seems reasonable something will be lost. If Charles avenges that loss, I feel he does get SOME of that streak back - especially bc of how dominant the first fight was. It’ll seem bonafide and resilient much like Izzy’s return. Simultaneously It’ll be so interesting to see islams career pan out. If Islam knocks off charles twice, draws into Justin then Dustin knocking them off in any order and collects a few more scalps from rising contenders all from outside his former coach’s shadow, i think you have to start having that conversation. Bc he’d beating a wide variety of type of fighter all in their prime especially
Charles doesn't get a seat at the table. There's no participation award for getting smashed and then catching people via dirty tactics or luck of the punch.
Great to have you guys back. For a moment I did think Brad’s t-shirt said “ChewyCum” but otherwise awesome vid and yeah glad to have Fight Perfect back on my feed
Personally, I’ve heard people call Charles the lightweight GOAT for a while - not just after the Beneil fight. However, as you lads said, the GOAT conversation does get brought up a lot when a fighter is at their most popular. Without looking into the analytics, I’d reckon that the following weeks after a big win for a fighter is when we normally hear this conversation brought up (That goes for all weight classes too). I think the GOAT conversations will always be complicated as many people base it off various factors. Some people base it off stats - others technical ability. At the end of the day I think we should appreciate the fighters whilst they are still active, and then have the GOAT conversations later on.❤

1- Charles lost to the person with the closest style to Khabib. So we could imagine how a fight between Charles and Khabib would have went. 2- Charles lost many fights and showed to be vulnerable even during the fights he won and lost many rounds. Khabib on the other hand only lost one round in his entire career, showed utter dominance, and was never close to losing. 3- During Khabib's time there was no one who was close to his level in the division, as to Charles he was dominated by Islam during Charles prime time.

People are saying that Charles will be the LW goat if he beats islam in the rematch and that's fine, but what about if islam beats him again? Islam would be on the joint-longest win streak in division history with 12 and the 3rd longest in ufc history with 13, he would be in the top 10 for most wins in the lw division, only 1 defence away from the division record and it would mean an emphatic end to the rivalry with charles. Plus if islam finishes charles, he would be in the top 10 for most finishes in the lw division and if it is by sub again, he would have the third most submissions in the lw division and the eighth most in ufc history. Surely by beating oliveira again, that would make islam at least the second greatest lw ever 🤔
Islam is in the making to surpass Khabib. Beating Charles , Dustin , Fiziev/Dariush then😮 done! But rooting to Charles to win , he is 13-2 at LW His carrier at FW was a disaster. (9-7 , 3 times missing weight) 😢

Atm, i do believe its still khabib. But Charles is nipping at his heels. If he beats islam, and then beats 1-2 more contenders, it has to be Charles. The question is who is the LW GOAT. Tony ferguson would slice Khabib..he avoided Tony Ferguson fight like a pro
Well said
LMAOOOOOO beat RDA by laying on him? You need to stop being so salty. No one says that about his fight against RDA. RDA got ragdolled and battered that fight like he was khabibs little brother
Jujitsu is the biggest meme in combat sports
More of this! I like hearing these conversations. Just some friends who know what they’re talking about going over mma. Big fan!
Trust me charles is loved just about everywhere. His story is one of the most inspiring one around
Which is what made me think of this example in the first place bc now I wonder:
Will Islam’s career have a pre-coach khabib vs a post-khabib arc?
Ike of the few times I read an essay comment and it wasn’t meandering rant 👏. I agree with almost all your points especially that Tyson point
Charles doesn't get a seat at the table. There's no participation award for getting smashed and then catching people via dirty tactics or luck of the punch.
This is such a well thought out, precise, and interesting comment. What a great way to explain your point of view. I agree with everything.
The fact that Tony isnt in the conversation is a crime

It’s weird because we all see Charles losing to Islam, yet destroying everyone else, including a lot of elite guys that Islam didn’t have to fight. It’s like Islam slashed Charles legacy and it still helped Khabib more than it helped Islam.
Not really, maybe Islam is the biggest competition to Khabib for Goat status. He is not that far.
Felder beat the shit outta Charles.
If Charles get a few more wins against top guys he will be my "goat". All of his fights are pure craziness
Is Islam not they I will say yessss.

Atm, i do believe its still khabib. But Charles is nipping at his heels. If he beats islam, and then beats 1-2 more contenders, it has to be Charles. The question is who is the LW GOAT.
