or you know those pro wildlife photographers use the top of the line bodies because they are capable of withstanding a direct nuclear strike and have enough battery power to shoot a week without charging and still have enough juice to jump start a truck

    • @jeffrydemeyer5433
      @jeffrydemeyer5433 8 ปีที่แล้ว +3

Yes I think it is one of canons first non top of the line bodies that has seen so much care in getting a sturdy body.
Probably the reason why Nikon introduced the d500 and didn't just update the d7xxxx again
But still if I were to be sent in the wilderness and had to pick a camera, I wouldn't even think about picking anything but a 1Dx or Dx, the lines have the reputation and $5000 is getting you a heck of a lot more quality control than some thing you can get for less than $1500

Very good video, I really like the effort you guys put into them. But I missed one thing and that is the fact that the 1DX II has 21 F8 focus points making it an excellent wild life cam by putting a 2X extender on the 500MM F4 of 600mm F4. And still be able to track.

16:00 because bigger display means much more surface to illuminate, more pixel to calculate and that kills battery life.
Also, more glass means easier to break and I'm not sure you can really fit a bigger screen without moving useful buttons out of hand reach.

Not really, they talked about the Nikon 3d focus mode or whatever it's called, Canon has the exact same thing... Also if you need "light up buttons" you probably shouldn't have a $7,000ish DSLR, i usually love their videos but this felt rushed, i couldn't make it past 12 minutes, maybe the video improved after that... and the intro was cheesy haha. Love you guys tho

+Tony & Chelsea Northrup press the AF button, go to the third box over, then switch to continues autofocus! I think that's how you access it. I'm leaving work so my camera is in the back of the car, if that's not it, Google it! I just did a quick Google search and their are lots of forms talking about it!

  • @avs4365
    @avs4365 8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

Great Review as always, but one slight point I'd like to make that is often overlooked in deciding which camera you need that suits you and that is hand size & grip. If a camera fits well into your hand & you can hold it and reach buttons comfortably then its going to be simpler to get shots that you want. For me, and it is only a personal thing, I have found the 5D 3 with battery grip attached the best simply because I can hold it at any angle. A friend who is a Nikon user hates the way the Canon is laid out. I know with time you can use to anything but handling a new buy prior to purchase is always a sensible idea before parting with your hard earned cash.

I believe for sports photographers and photojurnalists Nikon D5 or Canon 1DX II
for Weeding Nikon D810/D750 or Canon 5DSR/5D
for wildlife Nikon D500 or Canon 7D II and if you want full frame body as well Nikon D810/D750 or Canon 5DSR/5D

The loud noise made by these DSLRs is a big no-no for shooting in door dance performance. However, in order to get accurate focus in doors in low light situation, fast burst rate, huge buffer, and good ISO performance, these cameras are required. I really hope these companies figure out how to implement the quiet mode properly.

14:07 - the answer is EOS-1, which shaped modern pro DSLR look, for Canons AND for Nikon bodies. Nikon started to shape their cameras this way as well (the last legendary camera they had not influenced by Canon's look was the F3) and bit by bit turned out to look basically almost identical to Canon bulky pro journalist DSLRs. The EOS-1 though, had its roots in design and functionality of the Canon T-90, which is pretty fascinating. Both titans borrowed a lot from each other in history so now they are basically Canikon :)

Excellent, I was about to get the Canon 5D S R, to go with my 1D mk 4, but I was thinking maybe get rid go the 1D mk 4, and get the new 1D X mk 2. But after seeing this video, think I'll keep my 1D mk 4, for action (10 frames is mostly ok), and get the 5D S R, with its 50 mega for other stuff (even though it's only 5 frames)!, great great video as always, you two really make the best photo videos, thanks Greg (from the UK)

Great review, the first thing that I always get from you (and Chelsea) is honesty, I never got the impression that you are getting paid by manufacturer “XYZ”, unlike some other reviewers on you tube. Now having said that, since i’m not a professional and just for family and some street photography I got the Sony A7-II with the 55mm f/1.8 and I couldn’t be happier, printed as large as 20 X 30 and they look great on the wall. Keep up the great work.

Nice bird in flight photos! I've used a Canon EF800mm f/5.6 handheld shooting BIFs for half a day before and I couldn't get out of bed the next day. One of the coolest things I like about the new 1DX mark II compared to the original is that the lcd does not black out during live view high speed continuous shots.

    The combined factors of.
    - Able to get close to subject. (Sharp Image)
    - Subject moving extremely fast. (High FPS)
    - Subject moving extremely randomly. (Adv Focusing)
Means that the Nikon D5 is the best bet for me.

Have to disagree with your comments on the Canon 1 Dx mk2 as a wildlife camera. You were shooting from far too far away in this video. As a wildlife Photographer we tend to use the longer canon lenses and I have plenty of images that have been blown up to 20 x 30 inches that had a small amount of cropping and have printed perfectly. Certainly not 3 megapixel as yu suggested a crop might be. To crop to a 3 mp image you would be cropping to 1/7th of the full frame which we would never do.

Love my Canon 5Ds-R, But birds I use my 5D mk lll, recovery time is quicker due to half the Mega Pixels, and faster shutter. but you are right, if you want sharpness the 5Ds-R is the best. Mostly use it for land / cityscapes. Very interesting how the big boys are so fast and noisy. but for media and sports you can't beat them.

Regarding the rear wheel on the 1DX being uncomfortable, you should try interacting with the jog dial using the knuckle of your thumb rather than the tip of your thumb. That way you don't have to bend your thumb at a weird angle and you're able to quickly access the rear dial without moving your thumb tip very far from the AF-On button.

  • @vokso11

Humble opinion from a Nikon shooter : Tony & Chelsea you have made an amazing job doing this video ! Keep it up !
A camera is first and foremost A TOOL , no point arguying which one is better ! It's like arguying which pen is better to be a better writer lol. Cameras don't make great pictures , photographers do. Buy a certain camera because the specs & technology fit your needs. At the end of the day you will be judged by your results and not on your equipment ! I can be happy with either of them , but I will lean towards the Nikon one since I like the buttons layout better , just my choice.

Thanks for these practical reviews of these flagship cameras. Being in the Canon ecosystem, I suppose we were all wondering if the Canon sensor ADC would finally get upgraded to the Sony/Nikon equivalent, so that us common folk will eventually see these improvements funnelled down to less ethereal camera bodies, like the upcoming 5D mark "whatever". Your video reviews parse out the realistic parameters from all the spec puffery.
    Keep them coming.

Interesting that he mentions that the 1DX doesn't have a C-LOG color profile. Peter McKinnon always shoots in C-LOG and he's usually carrying a 1DX. I'm guessing installing Magic Lantern may add a C-LOG profile?

They are all good I'm sure, but if you plan on shooting assignments on a daily basis in PJ for example, the one you're going to want is any 1dx or a D3 and up body. Or even a D300, 1Ds or whatever it's called..

Great video Tony and Chelsea, it's amazing that DSLRs hasn't changed in 15 years. I can pull out my Canon 10D from 2003 and it look and feel just about the same. Canon and Nikon need to get some younger engineers working on their equipment, because DSLR are like 10 years behind on technology. I'm always apprehensive watching these Canon vs Nikon videos, but you guys did a great job. Great video as always guys.

Very clear and helpful information. Thanks for saying how loud the DX1 is. I have many photos of birds looking right in my direction thanks to the loudness of Canon. Not really happy about that. Would rather remain stealth. Interesting about the pixel quality and rather disheartening, as I often have to crop. Looks like I'll be renting the 5Dsr in the future.

I'm not quite sure a full frame is the best choice for wildlife shooting. Almost all shots end up cropped very small so all that extra sensor area is doing is adding size and weight, especially for long lenses. One could perhaps use APS-C lenses and shoot in crop mode, but again why not go with APS-C to start with?

Fantastic comparison, and thanks for pointing out the need for using OLED displays and ditching those archaic '80's LCDs.
Having switched (mostly) to Nikon with the D810/D500 I was thinking of parting with my 70-200mm f/2.8L IS II Canon glass but your recommendation for a 5DS R sounds like a great option, thanks!

+ Tony, what about Nikon D810? And maybe any mirror-less ones from Sony?

I have the D810 and I'm shooting sports. Should i even be considering getting the D5 for sports like MLS Soccer and Football? my main concern is the auto foucus

Thanks Tony! it is only after this video that I know what the D500 is for! It's a great option to consider!

If you were to use the additional 1.3 crop mode on the D500 how many pixels would you have? Or, would it be better to use a 1.4 teleconverter? Thank you for another very informative video.

Tony, you are spot one recommending the 5DSR. I traded one of my 5DSRs in for the 1DX_II as my 2 camera setup for weddings - it is a great combo - the 5DSR files are so pixel rich in comparison and when you want that detail it can't be beat. The only thing I partially disagree with is I think the Silent Highspeed Shutter is much better than I thought it was going to be in terms of noise - it is wedding appropriate for the most part - I still keep a A7Rii around with a Canon 24-70 in Silent mode with a Metabones IV T for completely silent ceremony shots. The other feature I found myself using, unexpectedly, was liveview shooting for even quieter highspeed shooting - with an IS lens and high fps with a big body it somehow seems easier to do this - something I never did with a 5D3.

I love how 6 years after this comment, the 5DSr is still better in the studio for sheer resolution than the R5. I am glad I held onto mine!

    - Great review! I am looking to upgrade my 5D Mark lll to a 1DX Mark ll but I'm not so sure now? I shoot a bit of everything but mostly hockey and sports. What Canon body (because I own Canon glass) would you recommend for shooting hockey? Thanks!

Hi, Tony, I've watched all your videos on Canon 5D4, 5DSR and now this 1DX II. Well done. Very informative.
It seems that I will not buy any of these Canon cameras and may have to opt for Sony A99 II to take photos of my very energetic 5 year old son. Look forward to seeing your review on Sony A99 II.

Tony are you using 3D tracking on the Nikons for your BIF pics? I've found 3D tracking to only be accurate for large subjects that fill a large part of the viewfinder. I've had better luck using AF-C and Dynamic 25, 72 or 153 points, with my D500 for fast moving, smaller objects. Many more keepers. Also, are you using release+focus, or focus+release?

Great review that is not only entertaining but communicates relevant info and opinions. its amazing how bad most photo/video reviews are. Just the specs over and over again with no real opinion or comparison. I have a 1dx mark ii on order but, just to make sure I’m not making a mistake, I’m going to now rent a 5Ds this weekend (currently have a 5D MIII and shoot sports and a bit of portraiture). The 1dx is probably the right decision but I now want to see just how amazing the extra resolution and sharpness of the 5Ds is before I pull the trigger. Where’s the 9/10 fps low 30s MP full pro body cam with the top notch focusing system alternative many of us want??? [and why do these companies spend any effort at all on the video for the proline cameras?] Anyway, great review. I am a new subscriber. Joe

I just noticed that Tony and Chelsea wrote:" The focusing system and image quality are very slightly better. It's overall faster. But it's just an incremental improvement."That's exactly what I meant in my post below. Such a long time to wait for an incremental improvement, is a real let down and a real shame! I can only hope Canon reads the forums and this comment section, and give us something that will be worthy of an upgrade (without having to wait 4-5 years for that)!
