Aputure LS 60x & 60d Review | What CAN'T These Lights Do?

  • In this video I review the new Aputure 60d and Aputure 60x LED lights. These lights feature multiple power options, a Fresnel-style focusing lens, wireless control, built-in special effects, and much more.
    The build quality is exceptional, and they include a high quality carrying case, as well as an array of accessories.
    I also compare the Aputure 60d and 60x against some other popular lights like the Godox ML60, the Nanlite Forza 60, and the Nanlite Forza 60b.
    This light is very close to perfect, but does have some color accuracy quirks on the low end of the color temperature range, as well as fan noise that might not be acceptable for certain people.

    I think these lights are pretty competitive for what they are. I bet this light and an Aputure Lantern modifier would be sick for a desk film setup. Nice and compact.......Hmmm.......Interesting to see what modifiers they come out with for these lights. Great video as always!

    • @NewLayer

      I honestly expected the price to be a little higher given the focusing lens and all the included accessories. A small lantern would probably work well, but I'm not sure even at full 45 degree flood they would fill a larger lantern evenly.

    This looks great. Thanks for the detailed review. I have a couple of questions. What are the cons of using a gel to get tungsten from the 60D as needed? I'm debating between the Godox s60 3 light kit or putting together a custom kit as needed with the Aputure 60D and any needed modifiers. I like the app control for the aputure system and quality as you have shown. Also, any lightstand recs to go with the light? Thanks!

    • @NewLayer
      @NewLayer  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The main cons to me of using a gel to take a daylight to tungsten is 1) it will be about 1/3 stop dimmer than a bi-color light of the same power, and 2) you have to deal with the cost and hassle of attaching gels. The pros to gelling is that when you are NOT using gels, you have a brighter light by about 1/2-2/3 stops, so you just have to decide what the higher priority is.

    Great video. As usual. How do these compare to the intellytech x100 you reviewed? Is the intellytech considerably brighter? Which one do you prefer?

    • @NewLayer
      @NewLayer  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      As far as brightness goes, the X-100 will be negligibly brighter when compared at the same beam angles, but it's really not enough to matter in my opinion. The 60x/d have a bigger beam angle range if I recall correctly.
      The Aputure lights are better designed and more compact with a better carrying case. And they come with all the accessories you need for different mounting/battery options, so it's a more complete kit.
      The X-100 has an external controller, and the 60d/x have the controls on the back of the light which I prefer, plus Sidus Link mobile app control. Unless you can find the X-100 a good deal cheaper and don't need the things I mentioned, I'd definitely get the Aputure option if possible.

    • @NewLayer
      @NewLayer  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      This light would excel in that situation. Other 60 watt lights would work as well if you put the stock reflector on, but this one has it built in and can focus in or out to give you the right size spotlight and brightness. Hope that helps :)

  • @noconordic6974
    @noconordic6974 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Excellent review, thanks. I am wondering if you have had the chance to use the 60d or 60x as a key light yet (as you mentioned you might)? I am thinking about purchasing one for location-oriented interviews, product photography, and video work. The portability and cost (over the 120D Mk2 are appealing - just not sure about the fresnel and output).

    • @NewLayer
      @NewLayer  3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      I have used it in testing as a key light, and here's the thing people may not realize about a light like this with a focusing lens
      If you take a traditional 60 watt COB like the Godox SL60W with a 120 degree beam angle and measure it bare bulb, you'll get around 3000 lux. Something like the 60d, with a much tighter beam angle may be 1.5 stops brighter or so, but once a softbox comes into play, they are essentially the same.
      If I put a softbox on an SL60W, all the light that doesn't shoot directly through the diffusion will bounce around inside and then eventually come out the front anyways. Granted, there is a small amount of power loss from spill/efficiency loss.
      If I put a softbox on the 60d, the majority of the light will shoot straight through the diffusion, with very little bouncing around, but the end result is essentially the same since all the photons end up coming out the front anyways.
      You'll probably get 1/3 stop more brightness out of a light with a focusing lens because of the light loss for the reasons I mentioned above.
      With all that said, if you use a softbox all the time, a focusing lens isn't going to do much for you, so if that's the main selling point, you may want to reconsider.
      The 60d/x have so many other great things going for them that even if you do use a softbox most of the time, they are well worth it for the case, power options, size, build quality, Sidus Link control, etc. in my opinion. If you need a lot of brightness for a simple key in a large softbox, I would go with a 150W+ light, like the 120d II or 300d II or even 300x if you shoot with ambient light.
      I hope that helps!

      @@NewLayer Extremely helpful, thanks! I'm a seasoned photographer but very new to video and using lights - so I very much appreciate the detailed explanation. My plan is to start with a 60X (given my budget) and perhaps work my way up to purchasing a 120/300 in the future and then using the 60X as a hair/spot/etc. - but I am now feeling more confident that the 60X will work as a key light in the meantime. Thanks again. I'm loving your channel!

    • @NewLayer
      @NewLayer  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@noconordic6974 I think that's a great plan, because like you said, the 60x is one of the best hair/rim/spot lights you can buy, so even if it's not quite what you need as a key, you'll certainly use it for something else.

    JT: Longtime subscriber who enjoys your thorough reviews. I've been using Stella Pros for a couple of years for their ultra compact size and high output, but looking to maybe update them with some thing small but more reasonable in price and controllable with a remote.. This light looks intriguing, but I can't stand those big u-shaped yokes and the room they take up. Is there a way to remove the yoke, and put a stud into one of those Arri rosette receptacles to use it with a heavy duty umbrella reflector? I know the light be mounted sideways for reading the screen, but I'd be okay with that. But I'm not a fan of those yokes. What do you think? Thanks for any insights!

    • @NewLayer
      @NewLayer  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Thanks for the support! You can take the yoke off completely. The knob on this light is a female connection, so the threaded rod is coming out of the body of the light. The other side is an allen bolt screwing into a female connection in the body of the light. All that said, you can remove the yoke and figure out a way to mount it to a stand somehow.
      The biggest downside would be losing the ability to mount your power source to the light, but if you have a little v-mount clip that attaches to a light stand, it might be no big deal.
      It's pretty compact overall, even if the yoke is proportionally large compared to the light, so you might find you like it anyways. Hope that helps :)

      Looks like another cool product from Aputure. I've been looking for a hair light/accent light, and this would certainly do that, but I wish it was compatible with Aputure's original remote control. I use that all the time on my shoots, and I loath relying on multiple cell phone apps to get my work done. It's nice that Aputure included a quality carry case, as that is an area that most cheaper lights fall short in.

      Thanks! I wish I could tell you for sure about the Dedolight, but I've never used it. Since that's a halogen light, and LEDs are typically less than 1/3 the wattage for same brightness, I would bet money that the 60d is brighter. Thanks for the detailed review. Quick question, would you recommend 60D to be used with a 41" softbox (octabox with both inner & outer diffuser), or is 120d m2 a better option? I have been using with ML60, but wanted to move into Aputure's ecosystem for Siduslink. Thanks!

    • @NewLayer
      @NewLayer  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      With a 41" softbox, it should work, especially with the inner diffusion to help. The only concern is the beam angle.
      At the widest, it is 45 degrees, which may not be bigger enough for really big modifiers. A 41" parabolic has more depth, so allows the light to spread out more before hitting the diffusion. If it's a 41" collapsible beauty dish or something, you may get a hot spot in the center.
      Long story short, if you plan to use that diffusion 90% of the time on the light you buy, the 120d II will probably be the better bet to get more even coverage on the front diffusion panel. Hope that helps!

      @@JunJung A deflector would definitely help with this tight beam angle. It's weird they call that a Parabolic Softbox, because it's not, it's a collapsible beauty dish. What they call a "Deep Parabolic" is what everyone else just calls a normal parabolic, and what they call a parabolic is what everyone else calls a collapsible beauty dish. Hope that helps.

      @@creativegreats6924 I'm saying it worked just fine with a 36" softbox in my testing, and should be fine with any softbox that uses an internal diffusion as well as the main diffusion panel. Since it's getting double diffused, it'll be totally fine.
      If your softbox is large (like 48") and does NOT have a small internal diffuser, you may get a bit of a hotspot.

    I really wish the battery option was a built in mount like the boltzen 55w rather than the awkward mount to the yolk with a cord running out of it. Would make me feel much more secure when hollywooding the light which is what I do to find the best spot before putting them on stands.
    Can you comment on the how well these lights cut with the barn doors? Are they decently clean lines for shaping hard edged background accents?

    • @NewLayer
      @NewLayer  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Personally I like this solution the best. I have some other lights that hold the NP-F batteries directly, like the Jinbei EF II 60. That light has 2 NP-F slots on top of the light, so they are pretty secure. I would be more afraid of the NP-F knocking out of the slot on the underside of the Boltzen than coming out of the v-mount clip on this yoke, but I understand what you mean.
      The biggest benefit to this style is that you can natively mount the AC brick and v-mounts as well.
      The barn doors cut similarly to others that are close to the light source. If you are looking for super sharp lines, you'd want the projection attachment with the GOBOs and flags to get perfectly straight lines. I haven't tested it because it wasn't out yet, but Aputure showed it off in the launch stream, and it works like other projection attachments in that way.

      They are nearly identical at full flood, however, the 60x flood is 45 degrees and the X-100 is 70 degrees, so that means the X-100 is brighter since you get the same exposure with a wider spread.
      At full spot, they are both 15 degrees, and the 60x is significantly brighter, meaning that it's much more efficient at focusing the light.

      The Aputure 60d/60x is very small, the Nanlite Forza 60/60b is super tiny. So although the Aputure lights are bigger, they are definitely not large, especially given the fact that they have a focusing lens and all kinds of mounts/accessories.

      I'd say the 60d/60x is a combination of the ML60 and S60 because it combines things like the focusability of the S60 with the Bowens adapter and NP-F capabilities of the ML60. I'm not a fan of the hanging v-mount adapter/controller of the S60, but some people might like that for it's lower center of gravity.
      The ML60 has the quietest fan ever, which is great, and is smaller/more portable than the 60d/60x, so I'm definitely not saying either the ML60 or S60 aren't worth it for some people. The new Aputure lights are just probably the best all-around because they do everything so well, and include so many accessories in the price.

      Yes and no. It is because it focuses the light into a tighter beam angle. A more fair comparison would be the 60d Vs the 200d with the stock reflector on, in which case the 200d would be much brighter.
      The Aputure listed specs are the most accurate I’ve seen, so you can compare the numbers they list for the 60d at various focus Vs the 200d with the reflector to get a good idea.

    • @NewLayer

      Indoors, it definitely could in a controlled environment. The thing about this light is that once you put a softbox on it, it's very similar in brightness to other 60-100 watt lights, because all the light bounces around and shoots out the front diffusion anyways.
      If you're battling with ambient light at all, I might suggest a 150+ watt light. Or, buy this and try it out. If it's not bright enough, you'll be glad to have this anyways because I think it's the ultimate 2nd light for rim, background, spot, etc.

    • @NewLayer
      @NewLayer  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      The 60x and 200x are nearly identical in brightness when you compare them bare bulb with the 60x at full flood (45 degree beam angle). You can compare them directly yourself www.aputure.com/products/ls60x/ and www.aputure.com/products/200x/
      The Aputure numbers can be trusted for comparison.
      The big thing to keep in mind for brightness is that the 200x has a 105 degree beam angle, so if you're working with huge modifiers, or modifiers like lanterns, the 45 degree beam angle of the 60x may not be wide enough to give you even coverage. Hope that helps!

  • @KevinZJR
    @KevinZJR 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    45 degree beam? No concept about this.....Is it like 50mm lens coverage? And what's the beam angle of ordinary bare COB lights?

    • @NewLayer
      @NewLayer  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I could/should've showed a comparison to help...
      Most bare bulb COB lights have a 120 degree beam angle, which honestly is too wide because people either put them in a softbox, or stick the reflector on them to limit the beam angle while shooting into exterior diffusion. A super wide beam angle would probably only be necessary/useful if you're using things like lantern modifiers.
      You can see a general concept of beam angle in this graphic: www.homelectrical.com/sites/default/files/styles/original_image/public/images/product/blg/blg-differenttypesofbeamangles.jpg
      Overall, I think 45 degrees is great, unless you have specific needs for something super wide.

      @@NewLayer From my experience of flashlights, I think beauty dishes and large reflective umbrellas will also benefit from a super wide beam angle. • @NewLayer

    Nice lights i guess, but for 400 bucks 60w seems a little weak? What good is it if it isnt bright enough? I can get a really good rimlight from the cheapest yongnuo junklights. Why is this light such a big deal to everyone?

    • @NewLayer
      @NewLayer  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      If all you need is a rim light from 3-5 feet you don’t need this. But this light could be a rim from 40 feet away.
      The 60d is 60 watts, but as bright as most 200 watt traditional COBs because of the built-in focusing lens. The cost of a semi-decent Bowens Fresnel lens is at least $100, and this light has it built in, so not only is that cost included, but an integrated lens is way more compact and workflow efficient.
      It’s also very hard to find a smaller light with v-mount support, or even NP-F support, let alone both AND one that includes all the mounts and accessories. Mounts like that are $20-50 each easily, and even a d-tap cable can be $20 (but is included).
      Other 60 watt lights don’t have mobile app support either. It includes barn doors and a Bowens adapter, which other brands sell for $25-$50 each. So overall, you get a ton of stuff included that’s normally optional.
      This light is probably the best jack of all trades light you can buy right now, but if you don’t need any of that stuff, it’s not worth it.
      There are other lights that can do some of what these do, but I don’t know any that do them all, and most of the other options that are considered competitors cost significantly more.

I currently have the came boltzen 55w and i struggle to see the difference to the aputure 60d? Like i said, for rimlights i have some older cheap yonguos that can do that easily, as i never need to beam light far away. But the main light must be rather strong, as i want to use it as a interview keylight mostly (and for some formal portrait). The boltzen 55w with an umbrella is too weak for really brightening a face against a daylit window (even a few meters away). Do you think, the aputure could achieve that? Im still tempted to give the godox ml60 a try, the „softbox“-combo is very affordable and im 100% on-location shooting so portability is key (both light and spftbox are small). Im worried about power output tho. Do you believe, that a 0,6m softbox brings light significantly more effective to someones face (eg being brighter) than a shoot-through umbrella? Otherwise i would indeed propably go for the godox 150, but its more expensive, different power solution and MUCH bigger... i want good bright light, a portable setup and ease of use... yeah, i get thats a bit much at once...but what comes closest?
      Another question: the aputure 60x has a fresnel. So how comparable are the light measurements? The came hase a „wider“ maximum beam angle and still can hardly hit the entire umbrella. Isnt a fresnel light rather pointless if the main goal is to always diffuse it? Also, any fresnel light will always have very high lux values in the center, but how do they translate when used with umbrella/softbox, any experience with that?

      @@m0nztam0nk The Godox ML60 is one of my favorite lights. I actually have 1 for sale if you're interested. DM me on Instagram if so @newlayercom
      A 24" softbox works great if it's close to your subject. I use a 24" softbox for all my videos in my talking head setup, so that gives you a good idea at how soft the light can be. A 24" softbox will also be brighter than a 36" softbox, because the light isn't spread out on as big of a surface.
      I MUCH prefer softboxes to umbrellas because you can control spill better, especially with a grid.
      The lens on the Aputure 60x has a 45 degree beam angle at it's widest, which is still wide enough to fill a softbox. If you turned it to 15 degrees then you'll see a hotspot on the softbox, but at the widest, it work just fine with diffusion. It's just nice to have the option for whatever scenario you need.
      With a softbox, a focusing light is not a big difference because even with a traditional COB with 120 degree beam angle, all the light bounces around and comes out the front of the softbox.
      If you're shooting through an umbrella, a focusing light will be brighter, because with a 120 degree beam angle COB, a lot of the light will miss the umbrella and disperse throughout the rest of the room.
      I hope that all makes sense and helps :)
