@@sanglamart Yea -.-‘ It’s always easier to suddenly do the right thing when you’ve been called out publicly. It’s really sad that it has to go this far before they take accountability for the wrong reasons. Let’s hope they pay everyone they owe back, not just you because it’s public. If you’re even a day late with your payment’s of a loan at the bank, you have to pay extra intrest and administrative costs. It should be like this for not paying your artists as well. Would be a pretty sum after all these months. So frustrating people think it’s ok to treat artists like this. It’s especially disgusting cause they are an artist themselves. They should know. Like Dustin said, I’d rather have lost the building than not having payed my artists. Cause essentially, those artists are now paying this persons rent without the artists consent, while allot of them are probably struggling to pay their own rent.. it’s disgusting things like this happen and artists are so unprotected
Update 2: They just sent me a sales report for the past 8 months. They did say they plan on paying but again, they have said that multiple times in the past 8 months and I still didn't receive anything.
This video was SO cathartic for me. My very first and so far ONLY gallery experience was so similar to Sang's but on a smaller scale. It took them NINE months to pay me and I had to pester them constantly. No contract, no invoices, and no communication, and they only owed me $130, like, that's Nothing and I had to fight for it. It's a shame, because I was so excited at first, the gallery owner told me my piece was one of her favorites, and that all my prints (all ten of them wow) sold out right away. I think my work fits their vibe and I could have done well there but this experience was just awful. I didn't even know I was SUPPOSED to get invoices until I watched this video! It's a pity that this happens so much, but it's somehow comforting to know that thousands of miles apart someone else has had the same experience. I know it isn't your main method of income anymore, but if you made more videos about how to interact with galleries and your other gallery experiences I'd certainly be super interested.
Such a great video! I feel really bad for Sang and the management for not giving her her cut when she deserves it. Not paying your artists means you will never see other artists even attempt to be another exhibitor. We talk to each other
It's absolutely insane that galleries throw artists under the bus, and how even for fast selling artists they are not paying out and getting more work in.
This might be my fav vid as this is the first i have heard your story. Never realized you been doing art from 2014 or went through the struggle of minimum wage jobs/ art like me
Thanks for exposing those art galleries! It's important for artists to be aware of these practices so we can protect ourselves. I’ll definitely request monthly reports if I choose to work with galleries or stores in the future. Still, I feel it’s safer for artists to run their own stores rather than relying entirely on third parties
One of my favorite gallery horror experiences was when a well established gallery in my area gave away my painting to someone who had no intention of purchasing it. I was displaying 30 oil paintings with them and didn't realize one was missing (and not accounted for as sold) until I picked up my work and got home. Upon kindly and professionally requesting my work back, the curator made it sound like I was the unreasonable one in this situation. Also the 'buyer' was out of town and couldn't return my painting in a timely manner. I really couldn't believe it. And that's just one of numerous unprofessional gallery encounters I had. Needless to say, this year I'm focusing more on vending at events and only doing shows that will be worth my time.
9:56 Look, I'm not surprised they let you in the gallery with a rapier (um, sword so ppl don't get it twisted), but with a frilly shirt and lacey sleeves as well! Also, I can confirm that Danny DeVito in a wig is a thousand times more salient than nearly all the art critics I've ever met.
Wow Dustin! I had NO idea this happened to you after graduation. I’m not surprised the works sold quickly, I loved watching you create those paintings. Still have my prints and plates from the photography you experimented with as well. So excited to watch you grow as an artist.
Coming back to this video to comment bc I just found out a popular gallery in my area has been doing the same thing of not paying artists :( Im sad this seems to be so common TT
as a Buddhist I would say the gallery which was named in Cali is building up their negative Kamma. I am glad you received all the recompense you were deserving of with help from your professor.
I reckon alot of artists have probably been thro something similar... there was one international artist gallery here in Melbourne that screwed over a lot of artists, including me and including some well really known ones who had done big shows. It took a long time for the artists to start talking to each other and asking if others had problems- and finally realizing the non payments had been going on for months, if not years... there's often this attitude of not wanting to be that 'difficult' artist... be that difficult artist people! Don't put up with this shit! I now run my own little shoppe/gallery and make the point of absolutely paying my artists at the start of every month or letting them know if they didn't sell etc. Running a biz on pure consignment can tricky if sales are slow, I can see that (mine only has a small amount of consignment) but really, people shouldn't start a biz like that if they haven't worked it out... 🤦♀️ Anyhoo, love your vids! ❤
well It does happen that many artist are always expecting more and invitation from a stranger as a safe point rather than making alliances with art moots !
Thanks for the video. Definitively doubt I would put my best work in a consignment situation if I didn't have a history with the place. BTW, I hope you do more artwork review videos. Peace!
Artists: WAKE UP! This video is really important. Sure, art is color theory, composition, paint strokes, and all that good stuff. But, know what - art is a BUSINESS!! Artists are manufacturers that produce unique creations called art. Like any maker of cars, fast food, or whatever, making stuff is only part of the equation. You gotta get PAID too. Folks, take some business/legal courses or something to help professionalize your operation. If you don't freaky people like this weirdo, 12:56, will be laughing - at your expense - all the way to the bank. No bueno, folks. Power up! 🤟💪
It does seem like there are more and more art galleries/shops opening that are being run by people who don't know what they're doing. I recently left a shop that I couldn't stand being in anymore despite making monthly sales. The owner boasted 40+ artists and makers in her shop, but only regularly promoted on social media and in store about five of them, which seemed to be her friends or personal favourites. Between intentional or unintentional biases and various other problems, I left the shop and warn anyone who asks me about joining. She very much did not seem to know what she wanted the shop to be or what she was doing business-wise.

Hopefully they don’t just prioritize you due to the video and actually pay everyone back
