  • Here is a video of my old Hoover single tub washing machine with power wringer.
    I don't use it very often for several reasons the main one being that the wringer is fixed in position and doesn't reverse wring so rinsing becomes more difficult .
    I have no idea how old it is but I would imagine mid 1960s.
    This is the unheated model.

    I can only imagine how many housewives cried with happiness, when they received one of these...
    I bet it did a far better job than today's washers too.

    Seeing your big sink with the brick wall under it reminds me of my grandparents house from 50 years ago ;-)

    I remember my late mum having a machine similar to this from the mid 1970's until about 1984

    I want one so bad, the old washers always seem to get clothes cleaner. Well worth the effort

      Three words: Rose. Coloured. Spectacles.
      That said, unlike nowadays, things were definitely built to last in the "old days!"

    My mum had one used in France, given to her, I used to help ( mid 70s) at 12.
    Worked well, and didn’t take all day, she was always reminding me to find clothes with the buttons in, she rinsed clothes in the basin , and they dried the hot sun

    My mum had two of these, this one and one with a hand ringer. Our clothes were spotless. She used Ariel. She had to rinse the clothes in the sink and then spin in a little round Hotpoint spin dryer. That has to be switched on with a wooden spoon as the lock broke. I don’t know how she did it and kept us do clean. She got a Philips slimstar in 1974. That was great used to jump about and was incredibly noisy. But did a great job. ❤

      Washing with my new Hisense Inverter is an "all day event," due to the RIDICULOUSLY long programs! ... I have to wash everything at 20c, because it's the shortest program, at 1 hour and 50 minutes!

    We had one in the 70's and 80's. These machines are actually still running today. You had to mind your hands when washing because the water got so hot

    My Mother had this machine when I was a child. She poured a kettle of two of boiling water into it as it didn't heat the water.
    It was purchased in 1961 and kept until 1981 when Father finally agreed to her having a front loader.
    Ours had the wringer but it was a manual one and it was my job to turn it.
    I complained the entire time.
    When I married I had the same machine but without a wringer.

    Most if not all of Hoovers uk machines were made by them in their factory in Wales.
    Their wringer machines were very popular and were made from the late 1940s up to the 1970s .
    I think I once read that they had a factory just for making wringers but I may have got that wrong.

    Nice to see a belfast sink in its NATURAL setting rather than being built into modern kitchen units. Its a silly fashion and it DONT work.

  • @marcse7en
    @marcse7en 5 หลายเดือนก่อน

    Blimey! The water is supposed to be INSIDE the machine. Not on TOP of it, and running down the sides!
    Fortunately, we've moved on from the mangle! 🤣
    Was it made in Merthy Tydfil? Like my late mother's 70s Hoovermatic Deluxe "Washdog" Twin Tub?

    How does it work?It doesn't have either a revolving drum or a mechanical agitator.How do the clothes swirl and agitate againist water?

    • @davenwin1973
      @davenwin1973 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      If you rewatch the video, during the draining process, it has an impeller on the side wall, where it spins in one direction. The fast spinning spins the clothes in and out of water. I like this method of agitation better than some of the US models (both current that are made of plastic, & older units as big, or bigger than this), where the impeller is at the bottom (similar to an agitator), but swishes the clothes back & forth, trying to draw down the clothes.

    it is possible to put the wringer on in a diffrent position just lift it turn to the next slot then drop it down

    • @lancethecook
      @lancethecook  10 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      No , the wringer is fixed in that position .
      Although the machine looks like it has too much water in it , it was I fact too much soap powder not water, hence a rather soapy splashy overflow.

    I never new that Hoover made a wringer washer! Did Hoover make it or did another company manufacture it for them?

    • @ozzie908

      Most of the UK Hoover products were made in Merthyr Tidfil Wales .. Not sure about smaller appliances though but definitely washing machines were.

    • @dantheman6961
      @dantheman6961 5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@ozzie908 Most Hoover appliances sold in the UK were made in Wales. (Back in the day.) In the 80s my mum swore by Hoover products. (Most people did back then, not now.)
      I can remember when she had to replace the fridge / washing machine / vacuum cleaner. They were all made by Hoover. Each one had a sticker on it, of a British bulldog dressed in a Union Jack with the words 'This one's made in Britain.' Nowadays I don't know where they're made, but it ain't the UK anymore. :(

    theres too much water in that machine

    • @davenwin1973
      @davenwin1973 6 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      With this type of washer, it was meant for people to do more than 1 load (usually no more than 3 loads) of laundry with the same wash water. So if clothes weren't that dirty & sweaty, these were more efficient than a front loader washer. If I had to live in an apartment, I wouldn't mind having a washer like this. The US had very few wringer washers like this. Most wringer washers were in the form of a top loader with an agitator in the middle. I actually like the side impeller over the bottom impeller that I see on what few portable washers I see in the US.

    Is this the one where you push the red switch down to pump the water out?

    • @lancethecook
      @lancethecook  9 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      With this machine you put the red switch into the wring position This switches on the wringer but also the pump so you can empty the machine without having the pulsator running.

    • @MrGrumpygit488
      @MrGrumpygit488 9 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      lance moxon If I remember correctly the one my Nan & Grandad used to have the pulsator ran while pumping out & sprayed you with water, they also had one of the very last Spinarinse spin dryer.

    you filled the washer up with too much water. the line in the washer that go's straight across that's your water limit and you put clothes in first then fill it to that line and don't use so much powder you only have to use half the amount. don't know if you knew that or not so I'm just saying ok.

    Hi. Could this model heat water?

    • @pcno2832
      @pcno2832 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      The description says this model doesn't have heat, but I guess that implies that some did. Washers with heat must have been more common in Europe than N. America; we had some pretty elaborate machines, for better and for worse, but I don't remember any until the last 10 years that heated the water. We had nearly boiling water out of the tap when I was growing up, so neither the clothes washer not dishwasher heated the water.

  • @pcno2832
    @pcno2832 7 ปีที่แล้ว

    Wow, that's barely a machine; washing must have been an all-day event in those days. I've never seen a wringer machine in use, though they were still marketed in USA in the 1950s; I read that Whirlpool made them through 1988, but most people would have had no idea they existed by that time. When the Washington Post first broke the Watergate story, Nixon's AG must have thought he could prosecute them for publishing leaked documents; his famous quote was "Looks like Katie Graham's going to find her tit stuck in the wringer." The joke was on him, but when I see those things, I'm always hoping there's some kind of safety cutoff; they look pretty scary.
