Growing up when I did, I was 5 or 6 years old when this was on the radio. This was the 1st song I got into and then the 1st album I knew front to back. I heard then on this carnival ride called The Gravitron, it was a ufo shaped ride that spun like a centrifuge and you got stuck to the walls.

Cobain was a great music writer. Many very serious musos have taken his music and adapted to chamber music and other more classical ends. That is the mark of a true quality piece of music .
Do yourself a favour and find '2Cellos" doing this song with 2 cellos with distortion on the cellos. Not necessarilty for a reaction, but REALLY worth a visit.

This song changed the world of music overnight. It started the grunge movement and caused the death of hair metal. It dethroned Michael Jackson from the #1 spot on the Billboards. The band members skyrocketed into fame and popularity basically overnight and Kurt unwillingly became the voice of a generation that was hungry for a change in music culture.

Here's some info on Nirvana... Kurt Cobain formed Nirvana around 1987 in Washington state w/ bassist Krist Novoselic. Kurt was not a proficient guitar player, so he focused on making raw, dissonant riffs (much like punk rock) and memorable vocal harmonies... His lyrics were very abstract - he wrote from a stream of consciousness and so a lot of his songs are very confusing (including 'Smells like teen spirit' ...he named the song after a brand of deodorant 😂) Chad Channing (drums) joined and they recorded an indie album "Bleach" in 1989 on the Sub Pop label.
Sonically, the album "Bleach" represented Nirvana in it's unfiltered form... an underproduced, low budget record, it barely sold in the States... but it got some fanfare in Europe. Nirvana was not like other popular rock bands in 1989/ '90... they were broke, weird-looking and greasy (hence, the term 'grunge' rock was later given to their genre) ...The also sounded completely different from either the 80's glam rock & hard rock bands like Poison & Guns N' Roses... and were not as proficient as thrash metal bands like Metallica or Slayer... so Nirvana was the odd band out. Still, Nirvana played clubs and attracted a strong female fanbase in their early days. Kurt was a fan of bands like Celtic Frost, The Pixies, Melvins...which he felt he could play live, but he was also a fan of The Beatles, Black Sabbath, Kiss, Led Zeppelin, etc.
What happened was that Kurt began writing new songs in 1990 and in 1991, a new drummer Dave Grohl joined... and he was incredibly gifted - Grohl, Novoselic and Cobain had immediate chemistry musically... But the band was still broke and could not afford to record an album. That changed in 1991, when record companies began signing & promoting a new wave of bands being called 'alternative rock' - R.E.M, Soundgarden, Alice In Chains, Red Hot Chili Peppers, Faith No More, Jane's Addiction, etc. were a few names already showing potential... Pearl Jam was another Seattle band signed around the same time. Geffen Records (Guns N' Roses' label) bought Nirvana's Sub Pop contract and gave Nirvana full creative freedom for a modest advance and a better royalty rate. The band had met Wisconsin producer Butch Vig in 1990 for recording demos, so he signed on to record the 2nd album 'Nevermind'... Kurt wanted a sound that fused The Beatles and Black Sabbath - heavy and melodic... Vig polished Nirvana's rough sound and delivered a heavy, pristine record in 'Nevermind'... The band also demanded an unusual cover of a baby swimming in a pool... and the band photo on the artwork had Kurt flipping off the camera 😂 The music video for the first single 'Smells like teen spirit' was a low budget shoot... it was filmed after a Nirvana show in a school gym w/ strippers as cheerleaders and their fans who were just at their show... According to Dave Grohl, the crowd got so amped during the shoot as the song was being played on the P.A. that they trashed the set!
'Nevermind' was released in the fall of 1991, just as Kurt (and his gf Courtney Love) got evicted from their Seattle apartment... they had to room w/ Dave Grohl before they went on tour in Europe. "Smells like teen spirit" debuted on radio & MTV and exploded in popularity... by November, it hit #1 on the US charts, knocking off Michael Jackson's 'Dangerous' album... When Nirvana returned from Europe, they were shocked to see their unknown band being played everywhere. 'Nevermind' would go on to sell over 10 million copies in the US. By 1992, Nirvana's success had opened the gates for a new crop of rock bands to rise to stardom... Pearl Jam's debut album 'Ten' barely sold initially... but went to #2 on the charts in '92 and sold over 10 million copies as well.
The thing u have to understand is that MTV was a huge marketing medium for bands & artists, and the image was important to sell... 80's rock bands relied heavily on costumes, makeup and video vixens to sell their music and concert tickets... but by 1990/ '91, that genre was losing focus and losing fans. 80's bands were not selling as much... the attitude of the 90's was a bit more angrier and cynical - Nirvana captured that change perfectly in their music. Rock records were being overproduced and overhyped, and most bands sounded the same... Thus, a fresh new sound was a welcome change, cos Nirvana sounded good and like nothing out there... Radio and MTV almost immediately started promoting the 'alternative rock' bands... and 80's rock bands were wiped out within 2 years - only a few would thrive in the 90's.
With 'Nevermind' on the charts worldwide and selling millions of copies, Nirvana became like The Beatles overnight... That change was a shock to all 3 members, but Kurt Cobain was the center of the spotlight, and he was not comfortable in it... As million$ came into his account, it did little to ease his physical and mental anguish that fueled his songwriting... his using heroin to treat stomach pains was getting worse. Still, Kurt & Courtney married in '92 and had a daughter - Frances Bean Cobain. A collection of unreleased Nirvana songs were compiled for the album 'Incesticide' in late '92 as Kurt began writing the next album... He did not want another 'Nevermind' - the next Nirvana album would be closer to "Bleach".
In 1993, Nirvana released the 'In Utero' album, which hit #1 and sold millions again, if not as much as 'Nevermind'... the single 'Heart-shaped box' was a hit on MTV, and Nirvana did 2 appearances on MTV - one set playing a live concert, and another where they would play acoustic songs for 'MTV Unplugged'...Nirvana played what is considered the best 'Unplugged' set, which included obscure songs that most people had never heard - that would be released in 1994 after Kurt's death and hit #1 on the charts.
Unfortunately, Kurt's turmoil and drug abuse was becoming a big problem when they went to tour Europe in 1994... Kurt attempted suicide in Rome, Italy... He was flown back to the US for rehab, but he jumped the wall of the rehab facility and returned to his empty home in Seattle (His wife was in rehab, his daughter was w/ his family). A few days later, an electrician found his body in his home; he had returned w/ a shotgun and a shot of heroin... Kurt had written a suicide note and shot himself up w/ heroin one last time before he used the shotgun to end his life (Conspiracy theorists think he was murdered, but no evidence of foul play was found, and a lot of stories were made up).
After Kurt Cobain had passed away, bassist Krist Novoselic did some indie projects like Sweet 75, and Eyes Adrift... drummer Dave Grohl launched his own band Foo Fighters in 1995, recording a debut album where he played all the instruments and lead vocals... Foo Fighters became a platinum success by 1996 and Dave Grohl (now on guitar & vocals) was adamant that he would not play Nirvana songs w/ his new band.

Nirvana's music was closer to punk & indie rock than the polished rock/ metal bands of the genre... Some of their best songs - 'Lithium' ... 'Come as you are' ... 'Serve the servants' ... 'Heart-shaped box' ... "You know you're right" ... "Scoff" ... 'Breed'... 'Drain you'... 🤘🤘🔥🔥
The 'Unplugged' acoustic Nirvana tracks to check out - 'The man who sold the world' (David Bowie cover)... 'All apologies' (Unplugged version)... 'About a girl' (Unplugged version)... 'Where did you sleep last night?' (Leadbelly cover)
'The Batman' movie used a haunting Nirvana song - 'Something in the way' 🔥🔥

Fun fact for you Anastasia, Michael Stipe of REM was a great friend of Kurt's. He made the song 'man on the moon' as a piss-take, to have more 'yeah's in it than Nirvana's 'Lithium'.

Funny thing is this song is pretty much an intentional troll. He's known for actually hating it. It doesn't make a lot of sense because he was poking fun at modern pop music and it's shallow pointless meaning. So he wrote his version of a pop song. That's the genius of Kurt
