Alan Barker. You are so right, the quay is now just a car park which costs a fortune to enter.
They even got rid of the motorcycles from the car park so more people could eat their fish & chips there.
The views from the 50/60s looked wonderful, thanks for posting these wonderful pic's, they are priceless.

It’s not much different. There are 180 listed buildings

Thank you so much for posting those old photos.
Some seem to be from the 1950s or 60s as they show Wells as I remember it from my childhood. Others I think are pre-war as they show railway wagons on the quay. I particularly enjoyed seeing the railway station as it was when I used to travel there by train with my parents. Sadly the line closed in 1964.
    Great stuff!

It is a lot different, it’s so much more "spacious" than it is now

at 0:51 what is the building sticking out on legs?

Tom, I use to have my summer holidays as a kid in Wells (+40 years ago). The building on legs was some form of fixed gantry that connected directly to a grainery (from memory) directly opposite. The grain was delivered to the quay by sea via "coasters" and the building on legs had a one (or two) very large, long and flexible hoses connected from the top to the bottom that vacuumed out the coasters cargo hold......fascinating to watch and extremely dusty.
