In the long run, this evolution will be a great step for Sony, as the A1 release was a few years ago. My bet is that it will be a year or two before the global shutter is available in the $4000 range camera bodies. I bet my A1 is still working, and that the A9iii will be a mature proven product by then, possibly available in a price range more attractive to us retired non-pro GASaholics. Thanks for the video.

Even though I enjoy shooting stills more on cameras like Fujifilm, Leica or the latest Nikon Zf due to it's retro experience, I have to say Sony always pushes the envelope regarding tech and specs with every camera release. I'm pumped about you having this beast soon in your hands and if you will noticed the absolutley high end specs for your usage / workflows.
Seeing this I can't wait to see their next video centric camera release - like FX4 or something that includes the global shutter and maybe even in-built ND etc.

I had a chance to play with it for a bit and it does 100% change the game! It's hard to say what feature is more incredible, the 120fps black out free shooting, the zero rolling shutter, or the 1/80,000 max shutter, or the fact that you sync a flash to any shutter speed all the way to 1/80,000sec.... Sony was swinging for the fences with this release, no question! Great video 👊
Great job on the video Mark! Thanks for making it. I think we can pretty much guess that the A1II is likely going to have all these same features with a 61MP (or higher) sensor. Exciting times!
Definitely impressive - not just for high-action stills, but also possibly on the video side. I'll be curious to see the ISO/low light performance and overheating results once more folks get their hands on test units. The $6K price is the question as to whether it's worth it, or waiting a bit to see what Sony has in store for its future models (e.g. a7S IV, a1 II, a7 V, etc.).
Boy, you're fast. I'm telling you, the A9iii might be the one camera that does all what I need. Yes, it's $6K USD. But, it is definitely on my wishlist. Global shutter for video is a winner. The LCD is even 2 million pixel res. Nine million EVF? Holy cow.

Now Sony has announced a global-shutter camera with exactly twice the megapixels at exactly twice the price, and it's supposedly a civilization-shaking breakthrough. Howzat?
The A9 iii is an extremely capable camera with 120 fps, ai autofocus, amazing video features and has a giant lens ecosystem that the masses have already adopted. There would be a similar reaction if Nikon or Canon did it. Unfortunately, it’s hard for a small company to gain the worlds’ attention because they simply don’t have ecosystem and customer base of the major companies.

Not sure how anyone else can justify the cost. The A1 isn't much more at CDN $8500.00 Vs A9 III at $8,299.99 and seems more versatile with lots of crop room and more video features as well as minimal rolling shutter as is. If I am mistaken, I genuinely would appreciate being corrected on this. I am learning about all this and really want to get an upgrade to my A7 IV but this doesn't look like it would be as I need crop.

There is nothing holding back the A1 other than it’s locked down firmware to protect the A7IV (no focus breathing comp) A9iii (no Pre-Capture) a7C (no Animal/bird eye AF in video) & A7RV (Focus Stacking in body) it’s all firmware... the A1 has the hardware and its crippled because nobody has jailbroken it

If I had this camera I'd end up spending another $6,000 on SD cards from shooting 24MP RAW 120fps movies non-stop. Then I'd need another PC from my rig catching on fire from trying to interpolate 4x slow motion on top of that with Topaz AI. Jokes aside, while of course it's a pro sports and journalism camera global shutter is the holy grail baseline of digital cinema camera sensors. When that trickles down into the prosumer cinema line it will be game changing. Just in time for The Creator 2.
I’ve wanted a high speed Sony since the original A9, but never got one. Now the have something I really want but I have so sell a camera or 2 to cover the cost.

A9 has always been a niche camera and at $6000 it goes beyond that now. The game changer will be when this shutter makes it to the next Sony A7V. If the A7V has the global shutter then count me in. Imo the competition caught up so they're going to another level.
What a compelling camera ! But selling all current gear to replace it with this one would be like putting all your eggs in one basket. If you can easily afford more than one then it’s a no brainer.
This is a test bed for their cinema cameras. Global shutter is pretty much a 'must have' feature for virtual productions. And *none* of sony's cinema line have GS. Same with Arri and most of REDs cameras too. But sony is investing boogoo bucks into Virtual Production, they are trying to have entire turn-key solutions for VP. LED panels, switch boards, mocap and cameras, all sony talking to eachother on it's own proprietary system that you have to buy into. I predict the next camera to have GS would be the A7S or an FX__ camera. But SDI and timecode are also important, so we might see sony use their fancy cold shoe electronics to give that capability to their mirrorless line
The top of the line cameras have it (not just Sony Alpha1 and all A9s). Allows the agency/press togs to connect to the server to dump the photos directly there, while they're still working on the shoot. Even though wifi and mobile tethering is available, the copper wire still rules for speed and reliability.

i'm a big fan of the latest sony colour science as well - plus I shoot in SLOG3 on Sony to C-Log2 on canon - so in truth, the baked in colours aren't a big thing for me

We quickly forget that we were content with 24MP just a few years ago. The Nikon D750 and also the Sony A7iii was one of my favorite cameras for wedding and it also had 24MP. You only need 8MP for a 4K monitor so you have a lot of room for cropping still. We try to convince ourselves we need more, but we technically don’t. I am more fascinated with the global shutter shooting photos at 1/80000 without any ND filters
Maybe you can take a tax write off on cameras you review? I’m thinking of creative ways to try all the cameras and make the mortgage. I usually buy used and sell what I don’t need. Thinking of renting. I tried making a camera channel but it’s a lot of pressure.
Except for the megapixel count and the 8k video, the A1 will be dead when the camera officially arrives in photographers hands. Sony just dropped a nuclear bomb on the camera industry!!!

@@MarkBennettCameraCrisis Just reviewed the Sony ad/presentation of that camera and all I can say is "WOW!" And it seems with the new technology, the 24mp sensor can take really fine and sharp still images. Might ease some people's worries about the 24mp sensor. BTW, when I started shooting Sony digital, I thought the sensor saved the image all at one, i.e. global sensor style. To my surprise, that was not the case. It was more like the mechanical cameras with a shutter that moved from top to bottom of right to left like in my Nikon F2 and FE2.

Sony has thrown down the gauntlet and gone beast mode.
