Nasi lemak is quite different from fried rice, the rice is cooked with coconut milk and if its freshly made, itll fill you up for a long time, making it the breakfast of choice for most Malaysians, it is usually served with either Chicken rendang ( a type of curried chicken ) or some sambal sotong ( squid cooked in chili paste )
gundog4314 I'm a big tea Drinker myself so maybe that's got something to do with it I don't know never been out of the country so I can't really say just thought you know☕🍻
Hi Gundog, great video. one issue though, the one labelled "nasi lemak" isn't a fried rice. when you were rehydrating the rice the white powder (coconut milk powder) should have been added, this will give the rice a kind of rich creamy taste ("lemak"). then the chili paste is added to the side and not mixed. if mixed it would become bland. so a spoon of rice and some chili go together so you get the kick of concentrated chili paste moderated by rice. the litle fried anchovies are also salted so thats where the salt element comes from. This is common sense to malaysians but of course we donn't expect everyone to just know it. Didnt the box have specific instructions?
With the fried rice I do believe the white powder was powdered coconut milk I would have added it with the water and the anchovies. Yeah that is a jasmine rice. That curry looks amazing. Yeah overcooked chicken but at least it is real chicken and not separated chicken that was reassembled into a slurry. These look really good. Thanks for the awesome review.
that's right, mix rice and that white powder altogheter before pour in water, after everything is set serve wih anchovies (it is nasi lemak acccesories beside boil egg, fried peanut and slice cucumber) & chilli sauce :-)
Yeah, there is an interesting tinned cheese product sold in the US, its a very large Australian brand but we can't buy it here in Australia and I had never even heard of it until I saw it on one of the MRE videos.
Do you have Malaysian or Indonesian restaurants near you, gundog? You might have to save up for a plane trip over there. You will NOT regret it. You can eat a different meal every night and not repeat yourself for a couple of years. Malaysian curry is influenced by the Indian migrants, but it's a whole different experience. Ditto for Chinese curries from Malaysia.
Bro, for the Nasi lemak you should mix the seasoning with the rice when you add in the water. And for the anchovies you should just put it after 15 minute. Thanks for your review man by the way.
Holy moly super exotic. I have become a big fan of 3 in 1 coffee and finally found where to buy some. Now I need to seek out some of the fried rice packs. Gunny, you & your reviews have encouraged me to experiment and have some fun improvising my daily menu.
Different, and very interesting. Really good sized portions, wow! All items looked delicious. You lucked out again!! Keep up the great work, Peace, John.
Its nice to know that my country wanna share with the world our unreliable soup spoon. Most of us really hate using that because its brittle af and sharp. Anyways tq forthe review Gundog
The vegetable in the Kampung styled Fried Rice is water spinach, a must have ingredient in order to make it deserve the title "Kampung styled“. We call it "kangkong" (pronounced kung-kong with a hard "k") locally. The stems are now used by some gourmet places in Southeast Asia as bio-degradable drinking straws.
We get noodle and rice packets a but like this in Australia. Good for lunch at work. Never had one with a coffee in though. Good lord that looks yum! A bit if chutney on that curry or yoghart would be to die for. Damn wantoneniw
You probably know this by now but I just found this video lol, but 'Nasi Lemak' isn't a fried rice. It's coconut milk rice. I haven't eaten that one, but I believe you should've put the white powder first together with the water. The sambal (red thing) and the anchovies should be added later. That's the standard nasi lemak. But thanks for the video, I've never eaten this myself. As for the vegetable, it looks like kangkung (water spinach), which cultivation is banned in America.
The "little fish" are called ikan bilis and are little anchovy-style fish. Great to mix with peanuts when you're having a beer- although that's not halal! The rice for the nasi lemak should have been cooked in coconut milk, not chicken stock or water.
Gundog, you're utterly awful... ... just kidding, I *love* your reviews and am jealous about the foreign MREs you can get. My local military-surplus shop only has older US MREs. Edit: I want that curry. You have *no* idea... holy crap that looks amazing.
I think I've had coffee or some type of 3-in-1 type drink in every ration from that neck of the woods. Sometimes it's not coffee, sometimes it's like Thai coconut milk tea.
that one called white coffee, more creamer & sometime use brown sugar or coconut sap sugar which give you different after taste than normal nescafe 3in1

Nasi lemak is not fried rice. The rice should cook together with 'seasoning'. I think its not seasoning but I believe that is coconut powder that you need to cook together with rice.
As a Malaysian, now I understand how rocket science our foods can be lol. This company should have put better instructions so no one will butcher the food.
cool. also heres the actual website of the manufacturer salees.com.my/our-products/ its kinda ironic that im a malaysian but i cant actually buy these rations from them directly.. also that dried fruit you were munching on is jack fruit

Deep-fried pineapple. They also do jackfruit, sweet potato, mango, and other fruits. Also very popular in Vietnam.

Ditch the plastic spoon. They always break. I only use regular stainless steel ones
Good review. Happy veterans day, brother!
Nasi Lemak & Nasi Bryani Chicken Curry yum yum! Kampung means Rural.
That anchovy is not supposed to be cooked. It's supposed to be crunchy and salty.
Good to know our friends to the west have a decent supplier of SHTF FOODS!
I love anchovies especially on my pizza 🍕

Malaysians traditionally drink their coffee sweet- with a slurry of sweetened condensed milk in the bottom of the cup or mug.
this looks like yum to the max!!!
I always remove the anchovies from the nasi lemak and I only ate the rice and the egg all time

I prefer using my own cutlery anyway, less plastic waste in our world the better.
The pineapple chips, is the best.
You could probably soak the pineapple with the rice and give it a bit more flavor and texture.
