Ahh I love a nice cheap lens! I used a $20 Industar 26M lens on my Canon P for a long time and it was honestly great!

Years ago I influence my then gf now wife to get into film photography. She bought her first camera, a Nikon em, and it came with this lens. She pretty quickly upgraded to an x700 but we still have that camera. Excited to get an adapter for this lens to use on my a-6500

I found that lens fd mount in good condition in an abandoned shed out in Anza,CA at a property my cousin had bought. The whole decrepit shed had stacks and stacks of boxes with cameras wrapped in OLD mews papers inside from early 1900s to the 70s judging because oldest cameras had bellows and the most recent ones were a canon ae1 with motorwinder and a yashica tlr i gifted my brother. I kept a few brownie and other kodaks. There were also super 8s and cinema equipment that i was told to take but never went back for, sadly.
I have an M42 mount version of this lens which looks nearly identical but uses different text colors in some places, and it has a shorter lens barrel. Still macro down to

The “multi coated” versions suck, they’re very soft, I’ve been through 3 :/
oh yeah I've got an M42 one as well, still macro, fairly soft but sharpens nicely if stopped down to ~f/5.6. I can't for the life of me find it right now but it's got the name Sirius, and it's also MC

Nice video. I have a ton of odd name vintage manual lenses but I exclusively use them with adapters on my various mirrorless cameras such as Sony A6000 series and M43. I got most of the vintage manual lenses from Pawn shops and include the likes of Vivitar, Miranda, M42, Takamur, as well as Canon and Nikon.
Honestly, that’s the way to go. If I was shooting more digital stuff, I would totally do the same and a lot of the times when I do shot some digital stuff whether bRoll or what not.. it’s with old lenses
I have this lens for my Canon A-1. it's a sleeper for sure. The macro is surprisingly sharp

I've picked up a 28mm f2.8 Clubman that looks super similar and boy is it sharp. Can hardly believe it's 30-40 year old lens for 30$ could be this good. Even adapted on a sony mirrorless it works great and the whole package is super compact. Would 100% recommend everyone to try them out especially if you find one so cheap.

Your lens in one of the good ones. They also have a 24mm (also branded as ensinor - with same K SN prefix). Most of the Clubman 28's are made by a different maker (SN has an L prefix) - but is also a good lens.
There was a similar thing in the UK, where a company called dixons (long since bust) bought a camera company called Petri. They made reasonable PK mount 28mm and 50mm lenses that you can get for stupidly cheap now because they don't have brand recognition.

Another really fun 28mm prime, is the Tamron Adaptall 03B 28mm F2.5, it focuses pretty close and has some crazy bokeh fall off wide open. You can find them sub $40 occasionally.

The rokkor name brand 28mm 3.5 can focus to similarly close distances. People always say it's bad vs the 2.8, why would you buy that lololol etc, but I got it for that very reason (0.3m vs 0.8m close distance), and love it. And it looks much sharper than this, I'd say. Not $20 though...
Best was a catalog showroom store based out of Richmond, VA. Similar to Service Merchandise. I used to live looking at the camera equipment in that catalog.

I recently got a Quantaray 28mm macro lens for 12 bucks and I LOVE IT! I put it on my Fuji, my nikon, and anything else I can get my hands on. Just like Franks RedHot, I put that shit on everything!

Really cool lens. I’ve looked at some of these cheap 3rd party lenses in F mount before.
If I remember correctly a lot of these lenses made for stores like Best and Sears were actually made by Tamron (or maybe it was Tokina.)

Hi. Does the lens have 'Lens made in Korea' on the barrel? If so it was probably made by Samyang. I have the same lens branded 'Sirius'. There are earlier 'made in Japan' versions that are LOT sharper than the Korean lenses (I suspect a different construction) at wider apertures. So unless you really like the mushy look I would go for one them (for around the same price).

Close focusing wides are so useful and fun. My favorite is the Nikkor 28mm f2.8 AIS.
Also, AFAIK the Celtic lenses are Minolta’s budget lineup. Your X-700 deserves better. ;)

That lens reminds me of a old sigma for nikon I have! Sigma mini-wide 28mm 2.8 with macro! Wonder if it's the same lens. My copy wasn't the sharpest, but did love the look it had :)

My go to 28mm 2.8 for Minolta is a Gemini branded lens. No idea where it came from but it slaps!

@@BadFlashes yeah there’s a lot to try out! Vivitar has been the best non-Minolta branded lenses for me. They made some really funky looking housings with massive front elements. Check out the 28mm f2.5 and the 20mm f3.8 specifically. They’re real fun to shoot with and flare beautifully!
I had to double check my Minolta XG1 when I saw this video. I swore I had the Albinar 28mm Macro on it when I purchased it. I was wrong, it was the Auto CPC Phase 2 CCT 28mm F/2.8 Macro. After watching this video, I pretty sure it's the same lens, just with a way longer name. Fun Fact, I picked up that lens and camera for $20, but the light seals are toast.

Albinar, now that's a name I haven't heard in a long.....long time. Actually I had an Albinar 70-200mm 4.5 zoom as part of a camera kit I bought back in 1983. It was pretty sharp for a budget lens.

That lens was made by Chinon/japan or Samyang/korea, I think. I have the Sears version in M42 and I have a 60mm version that is extremely similar, also in M42.

@@BadFlashes great episode, that farmers market has a ton of character that really works with the film and lens. I did love the cat photos, I think it really shows off the wide macro-ness, which seems like an awesome feature. Some of life’s best things cost $20 at a thrift store (well, eBay here)

@@BadFlashes As it happens, I have Two! The one I mentioned is a Tokina, but the other one is a CPC my dad bought ages ago from Sears, JC Penny, or Montgomery-Ward.
The Tokina is the one I was told is an "original."

@@lordofgonzo I don't think anyone knows for sure who made these lenses but I've never heard Tokina mentioned (it doesn't look like one to me). The 'Macro' in green versions were made in Korea, presumably under licence (probably by Samyang) and are pretty duff compared to some (but not all) of the Japanese made versions. Some reckon that Ozone opt. Co made them. Others say Chino.
That lens looks suspiciously like my 28mm f2.8 lens that ricoh made for sears back in the day....hmmm

Does it say 'Made in Japan' (rather than 'Lens Japan')? If so, you lucked out. It's waaaaaaay better than the lens shown in this video, imo.

@@JanneRanta The sharpest 28mm I have is the nikon 2.8 AIS. When I've compared them the SOii is not far off it imo. It's a really good lens.

My copy flared too much as a "macro" lens: edge details in close up shots were too degraded, plus a nervous bokeh. Tamron made a better version for a similar price.
Ok that’s also a good note.
It's a lottery because, although there is a lot of lookie-likies, they are not all the same construction and/or quality. Avoid the Korean made (macro in green) and 'Lens Japan' versions to give yourself a chance of picking up one of the good ones that are pretty sharp wide open. Good luck.
