  • Zoltán Kodály’s Dances of Galánta is an interpretive and virtuosic giant in the orchestral clarinet repertoire. CSO Principal Clarinet Stephen Williamson demonstrates how crafting one’s own personal narrative can fuel expression. “It's important to have imagery in mind when you play a piece like this,” Williamson said. “Actually, when you play any piece, you should have some form of imagery, and so I've basically come up with my own idea.”

Like the story image from Mr. Williamson, it's much easier to get into this excerpt piece.

What a fine musician and great person. Him and his wife are Eastman grads and 2 of their sons attend Juilliard and youngest is up at Interlochen. 🎉

see how, when he plays high G, he add pinky F/C, I think, to flat that G that tends to be a little sharp. And look the fingering for high D too!

The high D is a backless fingering, it's to make the note's color match more with thumb C. G does tend to be sharp on Buffets, but on Selmers it usually isnt (he uses a Selmer Signature), he uses the pinky to prevent it from becoming bright and still allow him to voice higher, in preparation for the higher notes as well as to maintain air speed.
