    Happy New Year Peter! Great channel and love what your doing. Today I will see about picking up one of thease gateways and see how it fairs in MI. If results look good, then I will purchase Amazon router for improved performance. Did a speed test with tmobile phone and found to average about 228mps/87.8mps down/up. This looks promising and will be so happy to move away from Comcast. Thank you again!

      That sounds good and thank you for the suggestion. There has to be a better way of creating and presenting answered questions than actually answering the same questions over and over. Those speeds would get anyone to quit Comcast. 6 months ago, I was getting 88Mpbs down and 6Mbps up and paying 35% more for the privilege. Those days are a distant memory.

    Peter, Thank you for your videos. I had to get rid of Suddenlink due to constant price hikes. I went with the T-Mobile Home internet, and I also bought a fan from Amazon because I had heat issues, signal instability, and interruptions. I replaced my TP-Link AC2300 with the Dynalink you recommended, changed the MTU value, turned off the TMO wifi broadcast, and although I did not see a huge difference instantly, one day later, I did! This may be because I did not know to turn off every ssid to prevent the TMO from broadcasting wifi. The TMO coffee can was cool as a cucumber at double the speeds up and down by the next day! Thank you for all your help!

Kodi (starting back with XBMC) opened a door that can't be closed. It proved the validity of video streaming, ushered in dozens of new companies and forever changed the streaming landscape.
      For many of us, Kodi was a time of discovery, a new era and a pioneering spirit that only some could see and feel... I will never forget Kodi, but have already mourned its loss. I've had my Gateway set up for about 3 weeks. Played around with it quite a bit and the very best I can do is around 60 mbps. At times it's down in the single digits. I'm on band n41 and b2, have three bars on signal meter. I set up an external antenna, just a little guy, stolen blade antennas from my Pepwave Br1 Mk2 cellular router/modem on a pole about 10 feet in the air, and have a solid 3 sometimes 4 bars on the meter. Debating on spending the money on a panel antenna to see if it gets me into some serious speeds. My numbers say I should have better speeds than I do, so I'm kinda stumped. I live pretty close to several T-Mobile towers but not line of sight. What antenna would you recommend?

      Chrisian, are you running into double-NAT with the DynaLink router? I was considering this so that I could reduce the MTU size, but I figure changing the MTU size isn't available if the DynaLink is set up as an AP (as opposed to a full blown router). My previous router, when set up as a router, then connected to the TMO gateway, would double NAT, since NAT was occuring both at the gateway and at the router.
      EDIT: Then i finished the video, haha... But is the option to change the MTU size available if running the DynaLink as an AP (or does it even support that)? My main concern with this is due to gaming/matchmaking.

      Ah, but this has been a 6 month progression. My speeds are better but as you say most of that is due to getting n41 as my secondary band. n71 is a different story. As a new T-Mobile user, I can’t say enough how much your videos have excites me about the possibilities. One thing I can’t quite seem to figure out though is this: they say their Gateway is compatible with modern wifi mesh units but give no instructions on what to do. Is it possible to not have to manually turn off the Gateway’s built-in wifi router and just plug in an external wifi router? If it’s possible, are you saying that disabling the built-in router would be most efficient so it doesn’t somehow conflict with the external unit? I’m not much of a tinkerer and afraid I’d configure something wrong. Hoping plug and play is a possibility. Lastly, is your garage temperature controlled? I thought of that as a location to store this hardware as well. Thank you SO much for your excellent content!!!

      Hi Castle Ranch, It is easy to support an different router, by basically ignoring the first. I wish that you could turn off the Access Point int the Gateway and put the 1st router into Bridge mode, but that option is not available. The solution I have crafted is fast, stable and reliable but it does result in a double-NAT, so I am living with the Double-Nat for now. There is no real issue for me. Actually, makes a good firewall. If I can't tunnel out, nobody can tunnel in. I was tinkering in with the idea of forcing my 2nd router to create NAT addresses inside the same domain as the 1st router... which might just work but I have not gotten around to that yet. Garage is in California, so it never gets below 40F. Disabling the WiFi is a nice touch but not necessary. Just plug in and go. Oh, you do have to make sure that your IP address is different than 192.168.12.1 but.... a conflict here is unlikely. Thanks for the note.

      As stated in the video, the only way to avoid the double-NAT to put the Dynalink in bridge mode and do all the DHCP and NAT but then there is the heating issue. I have everything set up almost exactly the same my 5g tmobile can has antennas installed which do work great for speeds and im using cat 6 and cat 5e, also wifi 6 using on wifi 6 devices. I don't use hubs just connecting from the dynalink directly to to my devices, and changing the mtu to 1420 doesn't change anything besides my ping going up a bit. But as it is with tech I knew it might not work so it was a risk I was willing to try but I was really wanting to get that lower ping lol. But anyway thanks for your help and making this video I really do appreciate the details. I'll keep messing with it see what I get. Hi Peter! Thanks so much for your videos. I think I watched them all before deciding to give Tmobile Home Internet a try. I picked up Netgear RAX45 and got it all set up and running great for about 3 months. Then we had an ice storm and service was disrupted / dropped a few times during the storm. Anyway... seems like T-Mobile is back to normal. Our phones are on 5G UC, and download speeds at 500+ and upload at 40 - 60 range. The Home Internet, when I connect to it via wifi is also testing at those speeds. But now if we connect to the Netgear, we are only at low 150s. Any advice on what to check? Because of where we had to set up the T-Mobile Home Internet device, we don't have a computer plugged in to it. So I can't turn the wifi off on it. It is plugged to the Netgear, and the Netgear is what we use for wifi. I understand that might not be optimal, but it worked for us for months. But for some reason, now the Netgear only downloads at low 150s, even though T-Mobile tests in the 500+ speeds. Any advice you can provide would be much appreciated on what I need to do to fix this Thanks again!

    • @PeterC408
      @PeterC408  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The Netgear RAX45 looks like it has some good specs, WiFi 6 and Gigabit ethernet, so it should be fine. Make sure that you connect to the Netgear using a Cat6 (or at least Cat5e) ethernet cable; Wireless bridges are cool but they can degrade performance. Also if you go to any switches or hubs, they need to be gigabit and Cat5e+ too. Make sure to change your packet size (MTU) to support T-Mobile network.

      Many people have stated and correctly so, that the internet on their phone is faster than their internet at home. This sentiment has grown as 5G has rolled out. This is 5G for your home. It is like a 5G phone connection for your house except it uses a gateway to turn cellular signals into ethernet and WiFi for your home - you will no longer need Comcast, Spectrum or any of the other members of the evil empire. As far as the setup? For better or for worse, you just plug it in. While that makes it very simple, many are finding it difficult to do many of the more sophisticated networking tricks like port forwarding and static IPs, which only 1% need, use or know what to do with. For me, it is the fastest internet I have ever had or imagined and it cost me less and got rid of the restriction of bandwidth. I once again fall asleep in front of the tv, but now it is in 4K.

    Well Pete when your video came out on MTU I tried it but didn't see much difference in fact seemed slower. I decided to give it another try. I'm using a TP link wifi 6 router and shut off TM wifi. I found a DOS prompt, ping then Google address -f -l xxxx, where xXxX is your MTU value. I started at 1500 and slowly got to my best MTU value with no fragmentation. It was 1392. TP link says to add 28 to that number and low an behold it comes up to 1420, the number you stated. I changed my router to that value. Ping slightly went down an download speed seem to remain at around 250 but upload increased from 10mbps to around 20. My issue with TM and wifi was the swings in speed. I would get highs of 300 mbps and 7 days later 25mbps and was forced to reboot the TM router when Wi-Fi froze. Since I added TP link router (20 days ago) I haven't needed to reboot but still get Wi-Fi swings. You mentioned you had issues with the Dynalink router and was told to change MTU and everything worked out but never mentioned what issues you had. By chance was it wifi speed swings? Thanks for your informative videos.

    • @PeterC408
      @PeterC408  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      The issue that we saw was Internet instability. The internet would "go down" but would usually auto-correct itself. That is when given the chance; often times my kids would run to the garage and start flipping switches... but that has not happened since I made that change and it has been over a month, thankfully. Speed fluctuations seem to happen on the network and I think rebooting has a lot to do with that. I normally get Bands n41 and Band 2 and get 740Mbps but then it will drop to 550Mbps for a week. When I reboot (and wait 5 minutes before restarting) I notice that I get reassigned to n41 and B66 and speed is up again. I am trying not to reboot because I do not want that to be part of my new normal (that was so Comcast for us). I am hopeful that it will come back with no intervention but 550Mbps is still amazing...

      Hey Ed. Very good question. It should not be any less, in fact it should give you slightly more. Some devices are limited to 100Mbps but I assume that you are testing with the same device. Are you connecting to 5GHz WiFi or 2.4GHz WiFi. 2.4GHz is slower at close distances but actually reaches further so at some distances is faster. Still 75mbps is too slow to explain any of this. If you told me 95Mbps, I would say it was your device was limited. Test it again at the same time of day. T-Mobile does throttle based on usage but it is temporary.

I have an older computer that does not see my new WiFi. I plugged in a 802.11ax dongle and everything worked. I then just hardwired that PC which has a 10/100Mbps NIC and now it does what it can. The reason people cant get the same results is because it is science and cellular data is not a constant . Especially in different areas there are too many variables to say if this works at my house it should work at yours. Obstructions to the tower the actual bands and transmit power of the tower the trash can is using etc. so speed/ ping results will definitely vary. That being said the adjusting the MTU will help with stability if not the latency.

      Hey Chris, are you comparing it to another router that was pushing packets of 1500 or to the bare router itself? This has been a progression over several months in which we ( technically, I ) already determined that the TMobile gateway was not worth using as a router.
      Two reasons:
      1) In order to get good signal in my home it had to be placed in a spot where it provided poor WiFi coverage. I took it apart and put in better antennas (another video)
      2) The gateway gets HOT when it tries to serve more than a few WiFi clients. I was not experiencing the heat issues because I was already using another gateway. I was curious and tried serving from the gateway and I confirmed the heat issue which caused the speeds to retard. Not a good design! Some people swear that adding a fan is the solution but just like Western medicine, it ignores the problem by masking the symptoms.
      Still, I was very interested in making this work... I was getting good speeds, unlimited Internet and a good price.
      Running an external router worked well but occasionally, I would get a temporary outage. It would usually correct itself but there is never a good time to have an internet interruption. Changing the MTU size not only made my network faster and more responsive but more reliable as well. At the time of this response, my gateway has been up for 27days and 21 hours exactly and is still pulling 738Mbps down / 144Mbps up at a 15ms PING! Stable as cable ever was and cheaper and now way way faster too...

    Would I be able to get back to nat2 instead of nat3 with this setup. I also seem to have my ping stay in the 80-100 range while gaming, but the ping spikes and packet loss when there is more congestion is what really hurts me. Do you think this would improve with an external router?

    • @PeterC408

      I am not sure how you got a NAT3. I believe Nat 2 is caused by the 2nd router. The problem is that their gateway as an access point wasn't good enough for my 25 devices. If you only have a few devices, just use their router out of the box... you shouldn't get a double-Nat from that.

    Hi nice video. I am having problems with my tmobile home internet. The internet speeds are too slllooooowwww. Im about 3.6 download and 1.99 upload. I just recently bought the t-mobile home internet box. It's a black rectangle box or tower like box. after making the connections the internet speeds were too slow. I saw a couple youtube videos that said I need to buy a 3rd party router and that it would increase internet speeds higher. So I did that. I purchased a netgear Orbi wifi6 mesh system. I then did the necessary connections by connecting a cable 6 ethernet from the tmobile home internet box to the Orbi and then from the orbi to my desktop computer which is a 5,1 mac pro 2010 and making these connections the internet speeds were still too low or same. 5G has a theoretical maximum of 10Gbps but that is a laboratory spec. That would be aggregating multiple Ultra-Capacity streams to produce speeds that would dissipate over 2 blocks. For Home Internet we are looking lower on the spectrum and currently only aggregating two streams. For TMHI, what I am getting is pretty darn good. If someone got 900Mbps (yet to be seen) I would be quite certain that is the current maximum on TMobile. Other vendors may be faster, but not at Home Internet distances. IMHO: Right now, TMobile is the best solution for the Home. Now... I get my 740Mbps over wire or over WiFi, so this is working GREAT!
