Pruning the smaller sun leaves to improve airflow near the base of the plant is highly benificial for preventing bossom end rot as well. Most zucchini plants only need 5 or 6 sun leaves to produce more than enough energy. You had a ton of great information, thank you for helping me with my soon-to-be garden 😁

Anyway, please continue to school us! You are a great teacher!

Hi there!!! Love your videos!!! You've inspired me to grow watermelon, cantaloupe, yellow squash, and zucchini!!! It's my first garden in a very long time. I'm growing the squash and zucchini in my patio garden bed... alternating one then the other. That's how much I love them. I cook them together with onion. I also have some growing in two raised beds. I plan to freeze some and share some with my friends and neighbors. Thanks for your inspirational videos.

if you want an easy zucchini dish slice a zucchini in a cake pan pour some spaghetti sauce over zucchini bake on 350 for 30 min then add shredded cheese and bake until zucchini is done and cheese is melted or you can use stewed tomatoes and Italian seasoning instead pf spaghetti sauce .

When growing in containers, placing wheat straw in the center of the container, then covering with soil, help retain moisture also. Fill the bag half way, then add the straw, then fill to the top.

I have a lot of space, a mini farm you might say. So we've never had the motivation to conserve space. But the plants they grow look very nice. Our next step as we get older is to build raised beds. I'm sure I'll be doing a lot of that over the next 5 years.

Another tip, if you are having calcium issues is to add Epsom salts (magnesium) to your soil.

Hey Kim have you ever tried crushed egg shells soaked in vinegar to add calcium for your plants? Bake the egg shells first to kill and bacteria. Let the eggshells and vinegar soak for about 2 hours. The vinegar helps breakdown the egg shells releasing the calcium to a form available for the plant uptake. I haven’t done his yet but. Have been watching videos on it and it makes sense. The vinegar won’t be too acid due to the calcium which is alkaline (most veggies prefer acidic soil anyway). Anyway just wanted to share. Your plants are beautiful and you seem like a doll. Thanks for inspiring us!

I've found if I use wood ash to dial in the organic potting mix to a perfect pH for the species I'm trying to grow, then do a one time treatment of Sea-90 minerals, and Epsom salt both mixed together in water at half strength, putting in a measured amount depending on container size; then do a nice thick top dressing of fresh bioactive worm castings. The zucchini and other plants grow amazingly well! Of course I brew up proper batches of compost tea once a month, using worm castings, a balanced compost blend and mealy worm frass to get unbelievable explosive growth out of them. I've never seen anything like the healthy fast growth from that simple process, in all my 32 years of gardening :)

Thanks millions for this one, Kim. We made our own self-watering container out of empty Tidy Cat Litter containers. It isn't pretty, but it houses the largest of our zucchini plants in 2017, and it started out as the runt of our seedlings and planted 3 days after the regulars were planted in the ground. We planted it in 100% compost.
    A couple questions:
    1. I didn't think about staking them, and now it is too late to stick something in the box without damaging roots. If we placed a soft cotton string and encircled the plant a few times around before tying it into a knot, do you think this might help support the plant?
    2. Do you know how much worm tea or compost tea to add to a self-watering container? I have one Tidy Cat container on top of the other, with the lower half housing the water storage and a PVC pipe leading from the air to the bottom chamber.
    3. Can I add the Tums to the water chamber to receive the same benefits?
We don't have mildew issues, but we have squash bug issues, and they seem to not care about hot pepper spray.

My problem is critters so everything must be encased in chicken wire and that isn’t always a guarantee! So i have to further encase in bird netting or shade cloth and i discovered something ate my green onions down to the soil line!!! It also ate my green bean leaves off but left a few beans! Eeeek!

I used to get Neptune's harvest fertilizer and make the compost tea with it. It's kind of expensive, but great. You pour it on the leaves and soil. Even the leaves will take in nutrients

@@CaliKim29 1/4 cup neptunes harvest, compost tied up in a porous bag with a brick on top it to submerge it, a few tablespoons epson salt (not actually salt), 2 tablespoons lime and 2 tables spoons sugar to feed the bacteria in the compost mixed in 5 gallon water bucket with a fish aquarium pump also pinned to bottom of bucket to aerate the mixture for a day or two.

I am thinking about using containers for my zucchini because i may be able to combat pest more effectively. Vine bores or cut worms.

I will use pepper mint oil mixed with water and Cayenne pepper as a pesticide. Maybe it will work.

May I ask how often would you recommend in doing the foliar spray? Can you also use hydrogen peroxide as a foliar spray to care for powdery mildew? Thank you!

my zucchini and squash all tanked this year. I tried everything I could think of to bring them back to health. They are holding on my a thread. The base of the plants are halfway rotted. Gary was talking about those worms that burrow so not sure if its that or rot from to excessive rain we’ve had in TX? Probably both!

Do bush types or vining types take up less space in containers? Which one of these two do you think is easier to take care of?
Do cucumbers or zucchinis produce more food for each plant?

Ours made fruit for a while, then the squash bugs got them. I harvested about 12 from 6 plants, then they all died. I am starting over hoping to keep them covered with the ag fabric and maybe the squash bugs won't get them till a little later in the season.

I should have grown one seed in one pot, but didn't have time. I bought mine. 4 plants in a each of 6 containers. I didn't want to thin 3 out of 4 plants.

I'm a newer gardener growing zucchini and yellow squash for the first time... in large fabric pots. I bought seedlings from Home Depot. Two zucchini plants came in one 4" pot, and three yellow squash in one pot. I can't figure out if I'm supposed to leave it like that, or thin to one seedling. I was too scared to try separating them and risk damaging roots. Any advice? Learning a lot from your channel, especially since I'm also in SoCal. Thanks!

I’ve had a couple really healthy flowers come up, but I notice they’ve been snipped off by something. Super frustrating. Also, something appears to be eating the leaves.

Do you rotate soil in the containers or replace it? My plants died from wilt. I germinated more seeds and planted in the same boxes. The new plants died too. I think I will replace or amend the soil with horse manure as soon as the growing season is over.

How long (duration and frequency) do you water you plants (using the drip irrigation) that are in smart pots? Are all the smart pots on the same irrigation line and timer/zone? I have a smart pot container garden (after watching your videos :) ) with a large variety of vegetables (tomatoes, zucchini, egg plant, celery, watermelon, squash, cucumbers, beans, radish, and herbs) all on the same drip irrigation line (time and duration). My vegetables are slowly growing, as you suggested I used worm castings. It took me over 40 days to receive the Trifectia Plus so I'm mixing that into the pots today. However I did water with worm tea every month. I obtained a meter and found the container soil is wet so I reduced the watering to 3 minutes once per day. I'm wondering if I should water every other day so I'm curious how long you water your container plants.
