So clearly explained and very helpful. Thank you!
Thank you for doing this. It helps me a lot.
What is -7 minus -5?
a negative of a negative is a positive. So -7 - (-5) would be the same as -7 + 5 = -2
-2
Rather than memorizing rules for multiplication (and division), it is easier to understand the reason.
We know that 1 is the multiplicative identity element, so 1 times "anything" is just the same "anything". So if "anything" is a negative, then multiplying it by (the positive) 1 gives you a negative. So a positive times a negative is negative.
Now take the case where the negative is a fraction, say -1/2. Again, since 1 is the multiplicative identity element, 1 x -1/2 = -1/2. Dividing both sides by -1/2 we have 1 = (-1/2) / (-1/2) = (-1/2) x (-2). So a negative times a negative equals a positive.
Why still these errors? At 14:09 it is about 5 minus negative 4. So the first - sign means to substract and has nothing to do with a negative value. Why do you talk about "a negative of a negative"? That is completely what is not in the expression. -(-4) means the negative of negative 4, seen as the opposite from the opposite of 4. But in 5-(-4) only the second - means a negative and the first means a substract operation.
Please stop teaching the wrong things.
