    In this video I show you how to add a brass inlay but you can keep it simple if you want and just leave it wood. I made a Tri-Force from the Legend of Zelda because it is fairly easy. There are two ways to add the brass. Solid sheets or brass powder. The solid brass I used is .016” thick. (see link below) You can go thicker even up to .026” or more, but I would not go much thinner thank .016". The brass powder way is not as shiny but I encourage you to try both ways for the experience. You can add other designs or shapes, even small stones can be attached. I hope you get a chance to make a wood ring because it really is fun.

      The original cyanoacrylates (the chemical name for the glue) were discovered in 1942 in a search for materials to make clear plastic gun sights for the war, and scientists stumbled upon a formulation that stuck to everything that it came in contact with. However, cyanoacrylates were quickly rejected by American researchers precisely because they stuck to everything! In 1951, cyanoacrylates were rediscovered by Eastman Kodak researchers Harry Coover and Fred Joyner, who recognized its true commercial potential, and it was first sold as a commercial product in 1958.

    If you want to improve bending process, i would soak the veneer in ammonia hydroxide rather than hot water. Its a little nastier (safety wise) but the wood won't kink and once dry, it will 'set' in the new shape rather than slightly springing back.
    Also a ring mandrel is like £7...

      @Thrillbo341 8 ปีที่แล้ว

    • @ZombieAlchemist
      @ZombieAlchemist 8 ปีที่แล้ว +21

      +Colin John Cunningham Way to make what could have been a helpful comment sound pretentious as all hell. Not sure if you meant it that way but you come off as more of a snob who like to throw big words around not a professional. Also next time you leave a comment like that, there's really no need to tell someone that you didn't like the project first like he was looking for that validation before you add your two cents.

    • @CoolKoon
      @CoolKoon 8 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      +Stephen Bathory I definitely wouldn't use wood glue, because not only it isn't waterproof (by far!), but all the stuff emitted by the human skin would make it fall apart in no time. I'm assuming that the maker of the rings would want his rings to be wearable....

    • @ryanh4136
      @ryanh4136 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +ZombieAlchemist As a fellow but mere amateur woodworker, I also didn't
      care for the obviously amateurish nature of the video (the figure/chatoyance(the optical waviness in the wood is called "curl" and NOT made based on how it's cut as the ignorant video states, but an uncommon way the wood grows). Also, bent wood lamination can be done using water for soaking and also with PVA glue, but also as corrected, other fluids and adhesives are much more suited o this particular project since it's a very tight wind as well as needing to be waterproof, which obviously this amateur that only saw
      someone do something cool and wanted to make a buck off putting this up would not know - a disservice to the watchers as well as the true pros that put other more informative and correct videos up on the topic. I'm NOT a pro woodworker as stated, but a decent amateur who appreciates Colin for saying he's a Pro since it differentiates himself from the video author as someone who actually knows what he's talking about, as opposed to simply being pretentious!
      Thanks anyway HappyAtom for sparking people's creativity and possibly getting people into the craft, a rewarding and useful hobby. I'd just do a little more research first so as not to mislead your viewers or sound too much like you have no idea what you're doing to anyone with just a little knowledge about the subject.
      Additionally, if the springback isn't as much of an issue, you could still use Tightbond III since it is waterproof. After which, a finish will protect it better from acids and moisture from fingers (varnish is most suitable or a oil/varnish like Watco Danish Oil, which can be re-applied as it wears) .

      You can also make your own veneer with a bandsaw. There are videos on TH-cam to help you out with that.

      do you think making actual rings is an easy process :) I think "it's really easy" is all in compared to what... compared to a week making a ring... yup 40 mins is easy lol

    Dear Happy Atom
    I live in Chicago, IL. and I'm a huge Legend of Zelda Fan! i grew up playing Legend of Zelda Ocarina of Time on the N64! I always thought wood rings had to be carved out of a solid block. Thanks to you My view has changed for the better! So Thanks a ton!!!
    The * symbol is an amazing idea and I'd like to experiment with ways on how to make a ring with * around the entire ring. Also If I can figure that out I would make a wooden ring with the engravings like the Lord of the Rings and Celtic Knot patter!
    Thanks again,
    your viewer,
    William Gumina

  • @TheMrSeagull
    @TheMrSeagull 8 ปีที่แล้ว +4

    19:20 - Why not just glue them while they're still in? It is penetrating glue after all.

    • @MarkShaneHansen
      @MarkShaneHansen 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +MrSeagull
      Penetrating doesn't mean it penetrates brass and gluing it before setting the brass makes sure they're glued on the back as well instead of just the sides.
