Another Cup of Coffee!
Welcome Back to Another BobBlast!
I really like painting everyday objects and this week’s BobBlast features a familiar one - a Cup of Coffee! You can’t paint a bad cup, no matter what your skill level. Everyone can paint their own version of a cup of coffee - this is my version!
For an acrylic painting, start off by toning the entire surface with a mid tone. For this demo, I have chosen Cadmium Orange. I prefer a warm orange peeking out when I scratch or scrape back into it.
First of all, actually look at a cup from all angles. Notice the top and bottom ovals, which are ellipses of varying degrees. Don’t worry about making your ellipses perfect. Simply paint-sketch the top ellipse, then add the bottom ellipse, matching the curve.
Next, paint-sketch the sides of the cup, from the top to the bottom ellipse… straight down. Violá, you have a cup! Now go inside the cup, and paint a “coffee color” in the same radius or curve as the bottom. Make this curve well below the lip of the cup, so the coffee inside is visible.
The cup sits on a table. Paint-sketch the back edge of the table, where it meets the wall color.
Make a decision - In what direction is your light source coming? This demo shows a strong light beam from left to right. Now I know the angle of the shadow under the cup - it's away from the light source! The cup sits on top of its shadow.
Now add your color to the cup! Be aware of the light side and the dark side. Mix your colors on your painting table, not on the painting. Use short, choppy strokes to keep the color bright and not over-mixed.
Do many of these practice pieces! These are my daily studio warmups.
Repeat, repeat, repeat!

One of my favorite things about your style is that you give the basics, such as the radius of the top of the cup is the same as the bottom, watch the direction of your light source, and dark against light, light against dark. But…after this the magic happens and you make a representation of the coffee cup, not an exact copy of an old tan cafe coffee cup, you make it a fun and exciting painting of a coffee cup! I also love that you place emphasis on practice and enjoying the process. Thank you so much for inspiring and teaching so many of us.
Wow - Marsha, you overwhelm me. Thanks for your very kind words. You have made my day!

A very lovely fun painting that can go on the wall or to share with coffee loving friends , love it .👍
Thank you so much for sharing your expertise & process with us! I am autistic & struggle with loose fun art. My work is often hyper realistic. It's good for portraits, howver, I envy the loose work by free artists. Blessings to you Bob!

Hi there. New Painter here. I was wondering how (where) to include a focal point when I have two figures in a painting? Thanks. All the Best.
They ARE the focal point
Always learn more when U repeat your style
So do I 🙂 Thank you!
What about composition ? should cup be in center?
Can be... Like a "spiritual" composition in my "16 Design Compositions" - can be dead-center, or you can use a different composition style. Your choice!
