  • Renzo Gracie third degree black belt, Shawn Williams breaks down how to setup his trademark position the "Williams Guard". For more info on the setup and moves that can be performed from the "Williams Guard", check out issue 22 of Jiu-Jitsu Magazine.
    About Shawn:
Around 1998/1999, by mistake, Shawn Williams discovered that he could better control opponents while in a High Guard/Rubber Guard position in which the fighter makes a framed grip underneath his own leg (between his knee and opponents shoulder). The move was later named the "Williams Guard". He is the head instructor at 5 Star Martial Arts in Los Angeles, CA.

This has been an absolute godsend recently, for a former wrestler like me who hates working from his back, and has short legs. Omoplatas come easy now!

I had no idea about the Williams guard until I saw a clip from Zara bees TriStar gym on TH-cam. He said this would be a great substitute for the rubber guard. He said if you don't have the flexibility for the rubber guard just use this one.

Brazilians were doing this guard in 1720. The Brazilian guy's name was also Williams.

So in 10p system this looks like a position called London which in the grand scheme of things is obsolete in the no Gi because you can spin to get out. But with the Gi seems like you can do more

No disrespect to Eddie Bravo, but williams guard is way more accessible to the majority of people than rubber guard.

haha, rubber guard was originally this exact position. they called it "London" but it was later on dropped from the system due to the fact that it is extremely easy to rotate towards the side they are using the guard and cartwheel over them to establish side control.

It’s a fucking shoulder pin. Jiu Jitsu has a bad habit of re-naming techniques already in existence. Also, a kimura is a double wrist lock.
