One of my friends read both those, then Kite Runner, and two more gruesomely sad stories in one semester.

I think what was actually happening here is that she is so lonely that, that was probably her only way to imagine having a friend/date. You kind of get a hint of that in the end when she looks over at the cooking pot and kind of has a longing face for actual company. I could be wrong, but that's what I got from it. ^^

Not just from her behavior, but she's doing homework, and was apparently unaware that there was a lobster in the fridge until that moment. Most 'housewives' are aware of the contents of their own fridges, where as a parent purchasing food for dinner and leaving it for their teenager to cook makes more sense.
