Bending along with good vibrato is the most underrated technique. It can be so expressive and melodic and is a special part of guitars identity. Once you get into doing those controlled bend and release tricks that guys like Guthrie and Chris buck are so good at your playing comes alive. Friedman was a master as well
9:35 this tip about vibrato on bends is so perfectly described, thank you! I’ve always wondered why I couldn’t make vibrato on my bends sound good and I just stopped trying to do it without ever understanding what was really going. You finally gave me the light bulb moment where I understand how to add vibrato to bends without them sounding out of tune!
Feel fortunate to have grown up on a steady diet of Gilmour, Scholz, Vaughn, Young, Perry, Schon....et al: This stuff can't be overstated. Separates the Men from the stepdads, for suuuure. It does take PRACTICE. Prepare to buy stock in string companies. Great video. 🤘
Phenomenal lesson as usual. You actually helped me fix something else in this lesson just by adjusting my left hand position on the neck (getting some bad stepdad habits out of my system). Thanks so much!
That’s a great way of explaining using the wrist and forearm for vibrato….I used to teach many years ago & that was a little tough to show since it looks a little weird but your door hinge analogy is a perfect way of explaining it 👍
@@BenEller Hey Ben, would it be possible for you to do a lesson on chord sliding with tabs (the best techniques for long and short chord sliding) and also include the best technique for individual string sliding. Thanks man. Brian
Ben with the half of one whole million subscribers - congrats man 🤘😎 I can sense the more better bends are on the horizon for me after this. Would you recommend leaving pre-bends until you've got normal bends pretty much bang on, or can you just try a similar technique to what you've shown here?
I had a keyboard player lurking around my festively lit outdoor shrubbery last night. Highly unsettling. Kept fist pumping despite no response. Those weren't performance lights my friend.
I got tony montanaed last night and woke up with some calus assed finger tips playing the guitar all night lol haven’t felt that pain in a long time! So perfect timing on this vid cause they hurt something wild 🤘🏻🎃🤘🏻

When I bend the B string my fingers run into the G and when I come off the bend the G will ring out. How can I cleanly get only the string I'm bending to ring out?
*But you're not BENding. You're applying vibrato.* Bending is a blues thing and came about before electrification to simulate emotive crying that blues singers were doing. Guitarists began to emulate these vocal inflections. Why do you teach, seriously? Why do you believe you are qualified?
I'll take the obvious bait. What the actual fuck are you talking about? The whole lesson is to work on bending to pitch reliably. They'll figure out how to add some soul to the bend later. Pitch is more important in the beginning.
The opening music at :42 has such a “Balanced” feel to it. Is there more to it, or just the cack tease? Wouldn’t mind a video on the amp set ups and tone mods for that. Im missing vitamins E,V and H from my guitar diet and this might help.

My Dad used to call him Youngtooth Mothballs when I was about 14 playing my white Strat in my bedroom with the Rising Force poster on my wall...ha.
@ lol. Yes
You have just become “Uncle Bend” love it
There are few things that point out the talent of a player better than a bend.
Thanks, Uncy Bang!
That’s the truth!

The most underrated thing about guitar playing is rhythm.

Thank you uncle Ben... never heard anyone explain vibroto like that before .. everyone should explain it as rebending ... !! Great job
I’ve always found descending bends are pleasing to my ears!

I can really hear Yolo Mumpcream’s influence with this sweet simple run. 🤘🏽
I have been looking for you to do more videos on this subject!!!! It is so important
The best part of Yngwie´s playing, unique bends and vibrato
Yngwie says one should bend only in key and t hat most bend out of key, thus sounding like shit.
I was born in 87. Boomer bends are amazing
AAMAIZIN 🙌
That’s a nice guitar
I like things that are nice!
Congrats to 500k subs! 🥳
Thank you!
Very cool. Thanks Uncle Ben
Good tips!
The hardest part is adding vibrato to the bend. That is where the real expression comes from.
I'm him. I'm the dude that showed up to talk about your sick vibrato bends after the show. 😂
hahaha siiiiiiick
Can confirm the kids running around the house are mine since I can play faster than step dad speed.
😢
Great video Ben! Does this apply to double string bends as well?
same essential techniques, yeah!
Steve Vai says he can spot an amateur when they bend and shake it fast
That’s right!
@ wasn’t insinuating that was what you were doing. Just something I saw on an interview.

An instant like when I see my favorite Bro-nytailed TH-camr drops a video!
Malmsteen gets a new nickname today. How many are we up to now? We need a compilation vid.
Awesome video thanks for sharing.
Thank you Uncle Ben. A very helpful lesson indeed ! 🙌. A bit of work on this and hopefully shed the stepdad bends.
Teaching single string scales all stealthy-like.
shhhh don't tell
Good one Uncle Ben!
When I think of bends, first one that comes to mind is Magic Man

Enjoying these practice ideas, cheers Ben 👍
Glad you like them!
I hate practicing it dry, Ben!
Bends have always been tough for me but I also have neuropathy on my left arm, hopefully this helps

Yeah doing this with pre bends is a great way to check your accuracy, especially with a tuner!
"More Better" 😄
You should also teach us how to bend like John Sykes or Gary Moore

Hit the target note then pre-bend instead of a slow bend

Forget about string bending... you should show everybody how to play that sweet riff during the animated intro to this video... am I right?
They aught to call you uncle Bender.
Is there a trick or technique to keep the bent string from hitting the string you are bending towards?
Nope, it’s gonna happen! You gotta snowplow that thing outta the way with the finger tip, and keep it muted with the picking hand.
I need more power for the bend on the g-string in Gilmours - Wish You were here intro on an acoustic

What is best way too bend thru the intro to Funk 49? Just curious. 🤘
Always take uncle bends advice.
How do I do this while, uh, not ripping my strings out by the roots? I've lost a B AND a G string to bends ;_;

“I like things that are nice” is a Kamala Harris-level catchphrase.
"Boomer bends" are more expressive than 500 harmonics in the space of 4 16ths.
