I remember doing this in my first year of blacksmithing classes. This was probably the single project that gave me the most trouble. You make it look easy.

Wow!! that is a cool weld, you do make it look easy. Looks like that could be a bolt head if you needed a really long bolt. (#good quality video, #good content) Wayne

Historically before commercial made bolts were readily available, they were made this way, they can also be made as a mortise and tenon and forge welded that way as well.

This series is great! Could you do an in depth video just on scarfing? I think that would be very helpful. Great video thanks!

So you're not gonna show us the finished product? Come on Roy, just sat through the video to see how you guys do it over there and never got to see what it looked like. You do it differently to how I do them and really wanted to see the difference.

Also if a swage block is not available you can use the step at the horn of the anvil to hold the collar while welding

    # good quality content. Would it not be easier to multiply diameter of the bar x Pi and add 1/4" on each each end of bar? than do the complicated looking formula that you show from Loreli Sims book? Haven't made a forged collar but did something similar to make a through bolt, did a tenon on the end of the rod slipped a square pc over the end and hammered it shut at a high heat.

If you could teach a cat to forge, now that would be world class entertainment.

#goodcontent #goodqualitycontent I would like to know how to manage the coal and coke fire efficiently for welding. My brake drum forge may not allow enough volume for a good reducing fire, so I may never be truly successful. Roy, do you have content already that shows fire management? Maybe another camera angle would be cool? I liked hearing you say, “I can’t see the collar or the shaft (same color as fire) they are at a good welding heat.” Can I assume that if I can still see them - the material is not hot enough to weld? Thanks!!
