His passing was very similar to Doncic and Ginobili, he was an amazing on ball defender and an even better help defender. Great versatility, clutch when his team needed buckets. As an Olympiacos fan I hated Diamantidis with passion but he's the most complete player I've seen in Euroleague to this day. In my opinion he's the greatest European to not play in the NBA of the last 20 years.

He was a point guard, of 1.96m, and is arguably the greatest defensive player in european basketball. Holds the Euroleague record for the most steals by a player, and the most blocks by a guard. Won Euroleague's Best Defender award 6 times (5 consecutive). He is still the only player in Euroleague's history to win Season MVP, Final Four MVP and Best Defender at the same year. With his high basketball iq, playmaking skills, elite defense, reliability in shooting, and leadership he would have succeeded in any team, even in the NBA.

Being one of the greatest defenders of all time in Europe is the exact reason that i believe he would not have succeeded in the NBA, along with the fundamental basketball differences between NBA and Europe . Best case scenario, role player in a regular playoff team. Much better for all of us (fans) that he didnt want to even try, so we had the chance to enjoy him all these years.

Im glad the stats line suggested here for his NBA career was not something outrageous - an honest 7-3-3 - best comp? not sure - players with that style tend not to play in the NBA - maybe a less flashy Lonzo? - but with way more control of the game - for those who have not seen this guy play, it may not seem much - but as an italian fan, anytime MPS or Bologna would play against the greens, i was like 'oh gosh, there we go again' - in some way, all played the game he wanted to play - octopus indeed, spreading his tentacles on the game - you never thought, not once, 'uh, now hes gonna do some dumb shit' - he played effortlessly, passionately - coach brown would say 'the right way' - what a pleasure to see the guy go at it - ευχαριστώ

I'm sure he would have been a starter for a contender in the NBA. He was easily the best Greek player and perhaps the best European player from the mid 2000s to early 2010s. He was asked many times to cross the Atlantic, but he chose to stay loyal to Panathinaikos.
You also forgot to speak about how clutch he was. He shot below 40% from three for his career, but when the match was on stake, he would shoot and 9 out of 10 times the ball would go in. His 3pt shot vs France still sends chills down the spine of Greeks.

But what cannot be described with numbers is that when the ball was in his hands you knew that it would end either to a pass that is a basket ready or he would shoot it sometimes even with more risk but the ball usually got inside. For his defence skills i believe that he is the best player of all times globaly, including NBA. Simply no doubt about it. We miss you Mitso, please put back on your shoes and come to our OAKA home

How beautiful is European basketball. It's a collective game. NBA, specialy contemporary, is a flashy, athletic, one on one, superstar show. I prefer '80s and '90s NBA. European basketball is based on IQ, skills and team game. Nowadays NBA is run, jump and dunk. Raw athleticism. Jokic and Doncic are strong examples of how pure skills and intelligence dominate athleticism. Diamantidis is one of the greatest.

At the time of his peak he could only have played for the Spurs as an elite backup of TP. The 2006 Greek national team win proves that all of those guards (papaloukas, spanoulis, diamantidis) were more than capable of playing excellent team defense and PnR offense against extreme athletes like lebron. In today's NBA especially diamantidis would be an efficient less talented Luka Doncic on offense and a beast on set defense but with big minus in transition or one on one defense. A bit like Joe Ingles as far as athleticism is concerned. Durability is the biggest issue and also the coach should know how and want to use him.

At his peak ( 2007) with the right coach, the nba equipment and the confidence boost from teammates he could be a starter in a contender if he was patient enough to stay in the NBA. Back in the day european players weren't as popular in the nba as of today, when rookies from europe can easily be starters in teams. What mattered is mindset and patience which is why spanoulis and saras failed. If 3D had those figured, he could be a starter in a contending team.. You don't believe me? His shooting was poor early in his career . Later on he was much better. He could defend anyone with success in the perimeter . He will steal the ball before you blink..He would rebound.....He would block your shot ...ask Chris Paul in the 2006 semi final th-cam.com/video/j_y8yzDZPzM/w-d-xo.html // Kobe knew his abilities and wanted him, but Diamantidis felt more secure in Greece.

IDK if he could have. We saw what happened to Spanoulis back then. Today for sure he'd be fine. Back then, no.

Honestly, this is a joke. FIBA rules and the way the game is played in the Euroleague don't allow for much in terms of individual heroics. The NBA is all about hero ball and mad stats are easy to come by. Doncic pointed this out himself. 3D was on the court alongside Spanoulis fighting Lebron, D Wade and Melo, and he came out on top, playing by FIBA rules of course. If he was on an NBA bench he'd be 6th Man of the Year, but he could easily have been a starter point guard for just about any team in the league, and he'd be a great contributor. Same for Spanoulis or Galis. The elite Greek guards have always been vastly underrated in my opinion. Problem is they did not grow up playing college basketball in the US, so switching to playing by American rules requires a transition phase, and American teams are known for being very impatient, and perhaps a bit bigoted against foreign players. It took several years for Antentokoumpo to blossom in the NBA, and Doncic also went through a phase of constant improvement. European and American basketball are different sports entirely. But any player who can put up eye-popping single game stats in Euroleague, like Spanoulis casually dropping 30 on championship competitors, or Diamantidis leading the entire league in steals, if they played in the NBA for as long they could maybe be HoF material.

Spanoulis could have played in the NBA as well and well. But Van Gundy joined after Spanoulis and he did not like playing newly joining Europeans. He said Europeans have tk stay in the bench first year to adapt to new system and type of hame and he did not add in games Spanoulis.
He then was offered to go to Popovic and the Spurs which was good match but Spanoylis declijed the offer for many reasons like family reasons and rhat he dod not like Houston ans was angry as Van Gundy

One of the greatest if's of basketball..what would he become if he had spanoulis' or any other great player's ambition and ego? He just didn't thrive for the extra mile that's my perspective on him..he chilled in Greece and Europe where he thrived instead of trying across..but hey, he is still a legend..a rather purposeless video taking into account he never really wanted it..

This comment is hilarious, ego? What is ego from your perspective in a good manner? Always taking the last shot or making the right play? Trying to get max contracts or agreeing for lower paying deals in order to chase championships? Hustling to be the best offensive force on the floor and not giving a fuck for the defensive end or giving every part of your self in both ends and getting it done by yourself?
Getting yourself garbage minutes in NBA games or staying loyal to a team for an entire career? I really don't get what's the ego you're talking about, no-one is or will be close to 3D and what he genuinely represents as a Basketball player and human being.

As many people said below this guys had fucking crazy basketball IQ . He wanted to play baskeball with the best against the best ! And not walk down the isle ! of the nba road .
