Roscoe Mitchell circular breathing is amazing. Kinda makes me feel a bit faint... This band of excellent musicians was just...beyond the norm. Saw them live in 70's and they blew me away. Terrific music!
this is really great all the way around. i had their live album on atco and enjoyed quite a lot but i remember the notes on the back saying things like blacks are the most creative people on the planet and how the band sought a return to a non-white set of musical values and i know they must have felt a bit compromised in this since they are all playing european instruments which are built upon the european equal temperment system. no american can play non-classical music that is not based on and continues to carry on joint black/white influences. that is just and historical fact, but their live album did have a point where they put down their european instruments and played percussion and maybe some woodens flutes or whatever.

Ask the average American, even college educated, to name any 20th CenturyEuropean “classical” trumpet player, or any “ classical” saxophone performer, and you’re likely to get a blank stare. Ask the same folks who Louis Armstrong was, and they’ll know.
