Actually most modern monorails run on rubber tires on concrete beams. This is done because rubber-on-concrete gives you better acceleration and braking than steel-on-steel.
I wonder why Sao Paulo chose a monorail for this line. 30 to 40 years ago, monorails were considered futuristic. But now we think they are not efficient and require too much infrastructure.
There are a few motives : The monorail was suited to be a better option to preserve the Avenues that it passes attractive to commerce and tall residential buildings. The subway lines couldn't keep underground because the rivers below the main avenue and would dislocated far more people off trying to builg a massive bridge to subway than the monorail and most important of all, the monorail should be complete since 2014-2016 and that only happened at the end of 2019.
Only in Europe and North America think that. Asia, Latin America and even North Africa are building lots of monorails today. Adding to the specific reasons Lucas described, the only real drawback of monorails is a lower system maximum capacity. But for routes with less than 45.000 pphpd and countries that can't afford to burn money like confetti, monorails are great. More silent, occupy less space, less need for expropiations, lower construction times, higher curve gradients and elevations, etc.
São Paulo Brazil Monorail is super efficient when compared to other lines in the subway system. the second line goes into operation next year, and there are 3 more lines scheduled to be built, because in general they cost 2 times cheaper than the underground line and each monorail train has a capacity for 1000 passengers, 200 less than the subway.

There is a creek under the avenue where the monorail was built. A subway would be a big challenge and very expensive to build.
